Box Office Battle: 'Thor: Ragnarok' expected to hold top spot

Disney's (DIS) latest Marvel superhero spectacular, "Thor: Ragnarok," starring Chris Hemsworth and Mark Ruffalo. is expected to again win the box office this weekend, its second in theaters. It is expected to earn an additional $54M-$57M domestically this weekend, following up its $122.7M domestic opening last weekend. Opening this weekend are 21st Century Fox's (FOX, FOXA) "Murder on the Orient Express" and Viacom (VIA, VIAB) subsidiary Paramount's "Daddy's Home 2," which pulled in $1.6M and $1.5M in Thursday night previews, respectively. Agatha Christie mystery adaptation "Murder on the Orient Express," directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring an ensemble cast, is expected to open in the $20M-$24M range, with the Thursday night preview numbers making the higher end more likely. Holiday comedy "Daddy's Home 2," starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, is expected to open in the $20M-$23.5M range. STX Entertainment's "A Bad Moms Christmas," is expected to deliver between $9M-$10M in its second weekend at theaters. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK), Lionsgate (LGF.A, LGF.B), Sony (SNE), and Time Warner (TWX).

Disney revenue miss due to shortfall at Media Networks, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst David Miller says Disney's revenue miss was largely the result of a notable shortfall at Media Networks, where sales of $5.46B were down 3.4% on the year largely because of lower advertising sales at ABC. Media's EBIT result was constrained by higher NBA rights costs, says the analyst, adding that Disney CFO has also warned that ESPN ad sales are pacing down in Q1. Miller notes that Disney's Theme Parks division is performing well, with Q4 revenues rising 6.4% thanks to higher occupancy levels at both Orlando and Anaheim along with the effects of surge pricing. The analyst keeps his Hold rating and nudges the price target to $104 from $103 following Q4 results.

Disney price target lowered to $120 from $130 at Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Stan Meyers lowered his price target for Disney shares to $120 saying investments into BamTech, Hulu, lower ratings at ABC/ESPN and Hurricane Irma drove the miss in Q4. The analyst, however, remains "upbeat" on the shares citing a "strong" film slate, growth from recent and upcoming carriage renewals, and continued momentum at the Parks. Meyers keeps an Overweight rating on Disney.

Evercore ISI incrementally optimistic on Disney's FY18 outlook
Evercore ISI analyst Vijay Jayant came away from Disney's lackluster Q4 report incrementally optimistic on the company's FY18 outlook. He said the massive film slate for the coming year should translate into double-digit full year revenue and OIBDA gains, while underlying trends at the media networks division are improving. Jayant believes management is making the right strategic decisions and the fresh guidance could be a modest postive for sentiment. Jayant rares Disney and Outperform with a $120 price target.

Disney deal for Fox wouldn't solve underlying problems, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Todd Juenger noted that Disney (DIS) has gone from a situation where reported EPS was going up but its stock price was going down to one where EPS is going down but the stock has been going up a bit driven by M&A speculation. However, he contends that the current round of renewed M&A speculation is happening because underlying fundamentals are "so bad" and even if a deal for Disney to buy Fox (FOXA) assets happens it wouldn't solve the underlying problems. He also thinks the chances of a Disney-Fox deal as currently described are "very low." Juenger maintains a Market Perform rating and $101 price target on Disney shares.

Viacom carriage deal should bring less stock volatility, says Jefferies
After Viacom (VIAB) and Charter Communications (CHTR) reached a tentative carriage agreement in principle to avoid a disruption of service, Jefferies analyst John Janedis says that importantly, he believes the Viacom's flagship six will return to the lower basic tier. More certainty around distribution should lead to less volatility in the stock, Janedis tells investors in a research note. He keeps a Buy rating on Viacom with a $43 price target.

Credit Suisse analyst Omar Sheikh lowered his price target for Viacom (VIAB) to $38 from $45 saying the rationale for re-combining CBS (CBS) and Viacom is becoming "increasingly hard" for controlling shareholder National Amusements to ignore. The analyst notes that a merger would transform Viacom's negotiating leverage with distributors long-term, generate greater than $400M of cost synergies, solve Viacom's leverage issue, and give it time and capital to invest in its core networks. Sheikh reiterates an Outperform rating on Viacom's shares.

Viacom price target lowered to $25 from $30 at Deutsche Bank

Viacom could be pushed back above $30 by Charter pact, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne noted press reports suggesting a negotiation going on between Viacom (VIAB) and Charter (CHTR) on a carriage agreement renewal and he is now modeling a nearly 15% one-time decline in blended affiliate fee pricing across Charter's footprint in exchange for broad distribution. If Viacom's networks get continued carriage on Charter, even with reduced fees, this could drive Viacom shares back above $30, contends Swinburne. He lowered his price target on Viacom to $38 from $42, but keeps an Overweight rating on the stock, noting that in any case the Charter relationship overhang will likely be removed by month end.

Hulu stake could be for sale this year, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Omar Sheikh notes that Comcast (CMCSA; CMCSK) will be free to sell its 30% stake in Hulu from the end of 2017. The analyst believes there is a $100B domestic revenue opportunity for targeted TV advertising long-term, which vertically integrated networks/distributors will be in a strong position to exploit. Therefore, Sheikh argues that it would make sense for 21st Century Fox (FOX; FOXA) to acquire Comcast's stake in Hulu, if it becomes available, subject to valuation and appropriate programming supply agreements. He reiterates an Outperform rating and $37 price target on 21st Century Fox's shares.

Deutsche Bank puts 50/50 odds on AT&T closing Time Warner deal
Recent news flow lowers the probability of AT&T (T) closing its acquisition of Time Warner (TWX), Deutsche Bank analyst Bryan Kraft tells investors in a research note. Divesting either DirecTV or Turner are both unattractive options for AT&T, the analyst contends. He puts the probability of the deal closing at 50% right now. If the deal does not close, Time Warner would attract interest from potential suitors within the media industry or outside of it, Kraft writes. He notes, however, that regulatory opposition "could potentially jeopardize certain other potential suitors' interest or ability to close." Nonetheless, the analyst believes Time Warner's stock price "would see meaningful upside in this scenario." As a standalone company, Kraft sees the stock hitting $83 in the near-term but appreciating to $95 over the next 12 months. The analyst keeps a Buy rating on Time Warner while reducing his price target to $99 from $103. The shares yesterday closed down $1.45 to $87.05.
