FireEye upgraded to Buy at Dougherty
As previously reported, Dougherty upgraded FireEye to Buy from Neutral. Analyst Catharine Trebnick said FireEye reproted solid Q3 results across key financial metrics beating her estimates on sales execution, strong NX appliance refresh/renewals, endpoint sales and Mandiant services. The analyst said Q4 outlook was generally inline but FY17 billings were lower-than-expected based on shorter contract duration on a few large subscription services orders. Trebnick would be buyers of FireEye on weakness based on new product traction, a simplified product message/pricing, and data indicated the company's growth and profitability goals are achievable.

FireEye billings outlook could bring buying opportunity, says William Blair

The analyst recommends buying the shares given the "relatively strong results and unchanged medium- to long-term opportunity." He keeps an Outperform rating on FireEye.

Deutsche cautious on firewall demand after field work
Deutsche Bank analysts Karl Keirstead and Gray Powell are "incrementally more cautious" on Check Point (CHKP), Fortinet (FTNT) and Palo Alto Networks (PANW) after doing some field work in the network security space. The consensus view of resellers was that traditional firewall demand is "stable at best, and more likely weakening," the analysts tell investors in a research note. The channel work suggests the disappointing Q4 guidance from Check Point and Fortinet may not be company-specific, and raise the risk level for Palo Alto's earnings report next week, they contend. Keirstead and Powell do not see any significant signs of recovery in product revenue growth at the main network security vendors in the first half of 2018. They add that their channel work is positive for email security and Proofpoint (PFPT).

Limelight Networks geared for larger content than Akamai, says DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Mark Kelleher compares the networking technology at Limelight Networks (LLNW) versus that of Akamai (AKAM), saying that because Limelight is more centrally organized across its 84 data centers, it can deliver information with less internet congestion. Kelleher notes that he recently discussed the contrast with Limelight CFO Sajid Malhotra, who explained that customers are willing to pay more for this type of content delivery relative to Akamai, which places its Content Delivery Network within the data centers of its ISP partners. While Akamai's CDN is more advantageous for smaller content like web pages, Kelleher says the rapid growth in video is quickly creating congestion problems for its network. The analyst has a Buy rating on Limelight Networks, nudging his price target to $7 from $6 based on the company's return to top-line growth, as well as improved operating margins, cash flow, and positive earnings.

Flex remains confident Nike relationship can be maintained, says UBS
UBS analyst Steven Milunovich spoke with management of Flex (FLEX), which said their relationship with Nike (NKE) is unique and transparent and both sides are committed to it. The analyst said he likes Flex for its move up the value chain, limited negative exposure to public cloud, and consistent shareholder return. The company believes it can stave off competitive pressures from Asia given its capabilities in high-mix specialized manufacturing, added Milunovich, who reiterated his Buy rating and $18 price target on Flex shares.

Morgan Stanley says lower for longer the 'new normal' for agencies, cuts Omnicom
As previously reported, Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne downgraded Omnicom (OMC) to Underweight from Equal Weight and lowered his price target on the shares to $72 from $86. The analyst, who disagrees with the consensus view that organic growth will return for the industry in 2018, thinks "lower for longer" is the "new normal," noting that ad agencies are part of the supply chain to major brands pressured by shifting consumer behavior and that many key advertising verticals are facing secular challenges. Swinburne also sees growing risk from major consulting firms, particularly Accenture (ACN) but also IBM (IBM), who are attempting to capture marketing budget that might have otherwise gone to agencies. He also cut his price target on peer Interpublic Group (IPG) to $22 from $24, though he keeps an Equal Weight rating on that stock to account for its strategic optionality.

Broadcom price target raised to $325 from $281 at SunTrust
SunTrust analyst William Stein raised his price target on Broadcom (AVGO) to $325 and kept his Buy rating. Stein cites CEO Hock Tan's strategy with regards to Qualcomm (QCOM) and his track of using M&A to generate earnings growth. The analyst anticipates that Qualcomm will likely reject Broadcom's $70/shr bid, at which point the latter will likely nominate a slate of directors while the former attempts to close its NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) deal as quickly as possible. Stein also says the potential Broadcom-Qualcomm deal could also be a negative for Intel (INTC) and a positive for Cypress Semi (CY) on competitive factors.

Stifel says Intel purported hiring of AMD exec furthers competition with Nvidia
Commenting on reports that Raja Koduri, the head of AMD's (AMD) Radeon Technologies Group, is leaving the company and speculation that he would join Intel (INTC), Stifel analyst Kevin Cassidy said that, if true, this news points toward Intel working to build a stronger GPU and general purpose parallel processor to compete with Nvidia (NVDA). AMD GPU deal with Intel adds upside optionality, says Canaccord
Canaccord analyst Matthew Ramsay noted AMD (AMD) announced a semi-custom deal with Intel (INTC) for the use of AMD's Vega GPU on Intel's multi-chip package for the notebook market. The analyst sees this as further solidifying the ability of AMD to monetize its intellectual property, which is consistent with his long-term thesis. Ramsay believes the risk/reward remains tilted to the upside and he reiterated his Buy rating and $20 price target on AMD shares.
