Palo Alto checks suggest 'depressed' market demand, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Andrew Nowinski says another round of channel checks with Palo Alto Networks resellers suggest market demand is "depressed," particularly from the large enterprise customers. The analyst, however, does not believe this represents much of a change from Q3 to Q4, and as such, is already factored into management's guidance. He also notes Palo Alto faces easy comparisons for both product revenue and billings in Q2 and Q3, suggesting guidance should be in line with Street expectations. Nowinski reiterates an Overweight rating on the shares with a $155 price target.

Deutsche cautious on firewall demand after field work
Deutsche Bank analysts Karl Keirstead and Gray Powell are "incrementally more cautious" on Check Point (CHKP), Fortinet (FTNT) and Palo Alto Networks (PANW) after doing some field work in the network security space. The consensus view of resellers was that traditional firewall demand is "stable at best, and more likely weakening," the analysts tell investors in a research note. The channel work suggests the disappointing Q4 guidance from Check Point and Fortinet may not be company-specific, and raise the risk level for Palo Alto's earnings report next week, they contend. Keirstead and Powell do not see any significant signs of recovery in product revenue growth at the main network security vendors in the first half of 2018. They add that their channel work is positive for email security and Proofpoint (PFPT).

Survey points to Amazon gaining traction in apparel, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger said the results of the firm's latest apparel survey lend support to her belief that Amazon (AMZN) is quickly gaining traction in the space at the expense of department stores and select specialty retailers. JPMorgan sees Kraft, Conagra, Dean rallying on Nestle speculation
JPMorgan analyst Ken Goldman expects Third Point's desire for Nestle (NSRGY) to divest assets to have an impact on shares of U.S. food producers. The analyst expects shares of Kraft Heinz (KHC), Conagra Brands (CAG) and Dean Foods (DF) to rally today on hopes of a potential accretive deal for some of Nestle's assets. The analyst thinks General Mills (GIS) shares may drop slightly on speculation that Nestle sells Cereal Partners Worldwide, which he believes would hinder the company's ability to grow cereal internationally. General Mills has a global partnership with Nestle via Cereal Partners Worldwide. Goldman also thinks Pinnacle Foods (PF) could trade down slightly with Conagra having "another potential dance partner" to do a deal.

'Third Wave' coffee shops still too small to hurt Starbucks, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst John Glass said the emergence of more "Third Wave" coffee shops have fueled competitive fears for Starbucks (SBUX), but he contends that the absolute numbers of specialty chains with 10 or more units remain small and most data sources show smaller chains and independents are flat to slightly declining in number. Recent high profile investments in specialty coffee, such as JAB's purchases of Stumptown and Intelligentsia and Nestle's (NSRGY) majority stake in Blue Bottle, are making headlines, but the brands' competitive relevance may be overstated, Glass tells investors. The analyst, who added that the last time McDonald's (MCD) pushed into specialty coffee it had "no discernable negative impact on Starbucks, and arguably even a positive one," keeps an Overweight rating and $62 price target on Starbucks shares.
