NASDAQ comp poked above 7k for the first time
NASDAQ comp poked above 7k for the first time to trade as high as 7,003.05 before retreating again, up over 0.9% on the session as the tax votes loom mid-week before holiday trading and potential on-the-fact selling kicks in. European gains compounded the upmove, though they pulled back from highs into the close with the Euro Stoxx 50 up 1.3% and the German DAX 1.5% higher amid coalition building hopes. Within the Dow the top gainers are Intel +2.7%, DowDuPont +2% and AMEX +1.6%, while deepest decliners ar Disney -0.4% and J&J -0.2%. The VIX equity volatility index retreated 1% to 9.26 lows before finding traction, eying November lows of 8.56 next and well below November/ December highs near 14.50 when tax cut legislation hit some speed bumps. The dollar index slumped 0.5% to the 93.56 area in contrast to firmer gold over $1,262, while WTI crude has pulled back from earlier highs to falter 0.7% to $56.88.
