Macy's, Gap rise on strong holiday season sales data

Several retailers are on the rise after MasterCard Spending Pulse, which tracks online and in-store spending, reported that holiday sales increased 4.9% this year, the largest year-over-year increase since 2011. HAPPY HOLIDAY SEASON: MasterCard SpendingPulse has reported that holiday sales increased 4.9% this year, setting a new record for dollars spent. This is the largest year-over-year increase since 2011 and a further indication of consumer confidence. Online shopping also saw large gains of 18.1% compared to 2016, boosted by a late season rally. The SpendingPulse report details holiday shopping from November 1 through December 24 and covers retail sales across all payment types, including cash and check. According to the report, electronics and appliances increased 7.5%, the strongest growth of the last 10 years, while the home furniture and furnishings category grew 5.1%, as did home improvement. Specialty apparel and department stores saw moderate gains, which is particularly impressive given recent store closings. Additionally, MasterCard SpendingPulse noted that retailers' heavy early-season promotions paid off, with the first three weeks of November seeing significant jumps. Shoppers were also still spending late into the season, with December 23 next to Black Friday in terms of single-day spending. This was a boon to certain categories, including jewelry, which grew 5.9% driven by last-minute sales. PRICE ACTION: Publicly traded companies in the space trading higher this morning include J.C. Penney (JCP), Kohl's (KSS), Gap (GPS), Macy's (M), Nordstrom (JWN), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), Target (TGT), Wal-Mart (WMT), Tiffany (TIF), and Urban Outfitters (URBN).

Macy's (M) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Citi with analyst Paul Lejuez saying the retailer's sales and margins have been pressured for several years, and J.C. Penney's weak third quarter preannouncement on Friday serves as reminder of just how challenging the department store space is. 5. J.C. Penney quarter raises several concerns, says Citi
Although the better than expected sales in J.C. Penney's Q3 led to a short squeeze, the quarter raised several concerns, Citi analyst Paul Lejuez tells investors in a post-earnings research note. Transactions were still down even with all the promotions and higher penetration of credit in appliances is a risk, the analyst contends. Further, he believes the comp boost from appliances is likely to slow meaningfully in Q4. Lejuez continues to believe Penny's "high amount of debt on the business leaves little value left for equity holders." He keeps a Sell rating on the shares with a $1.50 price target.

TJX stands to benefit from Bon-Ton closures, says Morgan Stanley
After analyzing which department stores and off-price retailers have the greatest overlap with troubled retailer Bon-Ton Stores (BONT), Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger found that over 40% of Bon-Ton's have a TJX (TJX) concept within a one mile radius and she sees it as the retailer that could benefit the most from a Bon-Ton liquidity event. Though Sears (SHLD) has the greatest overlap overall, there is no evidence to suggest it, nor Kohl's (KSS) and J.C. Penney (JCP), have been able to capitalize on Bon-Ton's struggles so far, added Greenberger.

J.C. Penney taking steps toward a comeback, says Cowen
Cowen analyst Oliver Chen met with J.C. Penney and said he is confident the company's liquidity, its multi-year ability to drive free cash flow, and controlled capital expenditures will mitigate some risk. He likes management's simplification of marketing, its value messaging and execution, and leveraging of non-apparel categories, which should drive greater consistency in traffic and growth. Chen maintains his Market Perform rating and $4 price target on J.C. Penney shares as he looks for visibility on greater consistency in traffic trends.

Amazon.com price target raised to $1,500 from $1,300 at DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Tom Forte raised his price target on Amazon (AMZN) shares to $1,500 from $1,300 after increasing his long-term sales forecast to a 9.8% CAGR from 8.6% based on his rising confidence in the company's ability to leverage physical stores to maximize its long-term revenue growth. Amazon's increased physical footprint, including its Whole Foods buy, book stores, and Kohl's (KSS) partnership, is "THE story of its 2017 holiday sales and an indication of things to come," Forte tells investors. The analyst, who thinks Amazon could another 1,000 plus physical locations and acquire an apparel retailer, such as lululemon (LULU), keeps a Buy rating on the e-commerce giant's shares.

Rapid erosion in physical stores may be abating, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc's research consumer team says that while online remains the key avenue for growth, the rapid erosion in physical store sales may be abating. The analyst noted that strong store checks reinforce their thesis that apparel is back, with the strongest traffic at Urban Outfitters (URBN) and lululemon (LULU). Meanwhile, Wal-Mart (WMT) was able to eschew wrist bands and had solid inventory of doorbusters, while Gap (GPS) saw strong traffic at Old Navy, they contend. Additionally, KeyBanc's team says its channel checks suggest Best Buy (BBY) continues to gain share and drove healthy traffic, while Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) offered slightly more aggressive, but still uninspiring, undifferentiated promotions. Moreover, they believe Conn's (CONN) maintains momentum with its credit offering, credit improvement story, and the recovery in the Hurricane Harvey impacted markets. Checks also revealed solid Beauty positioning, with Ulta Beauty (ULTA) as a winner with strong holiday positioning and good traffic on Thursday/Friday, the analysts added.

Jefferies sees some 'green shoots,' trims Macy's target to $20

Survey points to Amazon gaining traction in apparel, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger said the results of the firm's latest apparel survey lend support to her belief that Amazon (AMZN) is quickly gaining traction in the space at the expense of department stores and select specialty retailers.
