Jefferies views potential Hasbro, Mattel merger as possible
With highly different cultures and strategies, the possible merger between Hasbro (HAS) and Mattel (MAT) is less about financial accretion and more about risk/disruption, comparative uses of capital, and related returns, Jefferies analyst Stephanie Wissink tells investors in a research note. "Possible - yes; productive - less so," is how the analyst describes the possible tie-up. She believes the level of profit augmentation from a deal is heavily dependent on what kind of cost duplication actually exists and what levels of investment would be required to rebuild Mattel's sales model.

Hasbro benefits from Mattel acquisition would be immense, says DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Linda Bolton Weiser says that if The Wall Street Journal speculation of a Mattel (MAT) takeover by Hasbro (HAS) comes to fruition, at $18 per share price point the Hasbro EPS accretion potential could be at $7.50-$8.50. Weiser adds the benefits of the combination would be immense, noting that her analysis does not even include the revenue synergies potential, as Hasbro may apply its content development capabilities to Mattel's brands. The analyst keeps her Buy rating and $124 price target on Hasbro.

Twilio weakness a buying opportunity, says Baird
Baird analyst William Power said the weakness in Twilio (TWLO) is a buying opportunity. The analyst noted shares were weak due to concerns that Amazon (AMZN) Pinpoint and its two-way messaging could compete with Twilio. He said the company confirmed it in fact powers the two-way messaging in addition to supporting multiple other Amazon products. Power said although Amazon could be a Twilio competitor over time, it is also a low percentage of its revenue. Power reiterated his Outperform rating and $39 price target on Twilio shares.

Vonage, Twilio enable Amazon's PinPoint text messaging, says Northland
Amazon (AMZN) announced yesterday that it has added two-way text messaging to its Pinpoint customer engagement service, which leverages the company's simple notification service, or SNS, capabilities, Northland analyst Michael Latimore tells investors in a research note. Vonage (VG) and Twilio (TWLO) enable SNS and thus, the Pinpoint customer engagement text messaging service, Latimore writes. He notes that Vonage also partners with Amazon on Chime conferencing and Essentials. The analyst has an Outperform rating on Vonage with a $9.50 price target. Twilio should be bought on weakness, says Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron notes that Amazon's (AMZN) AWS has announced the addition of global two-way text messaging capabilities to Pinpoint, its suite of user communication tools. The analyst believes investor fears that this will compete with Twilio (TWLO) are incorrect. While there is no "Powered by Twilio" branding, AWS's new Pinpoint SMS capability is powered on the back-end by Twilio's platform, he contends, noting the close relationship that Twilio has with AWS. Given Twilio's presence behind the scenes, Kidron would view the announcement as a positive for Twilio and would be aggressive buyers on any weakness. He reiterates an Outperform rating on Twilio's shares.

Amazon pharmacy opportunity not as big as expected, says Cowen
Cowen analyst John Blackledge analyzed the opportunity for Amazon (AMZN) in the pharmacy business and concluded it may not be as big as expected and is multiple times smaller than in the apparel, consumables, and grocery verticals. He believes, if launched, a pharmacy business could be done via Whole Foods and multiple Prime platforms, but there could be several friction points. The analyst also makes a case for an acquisition of Rite-Aid (RAD), which would allow Amazon to obtain state pharmacy licenses, add infrastructure, acquire a small PBM, gain access to retail network contracts for reimbursement, and add immediate scale. Also, if Amazon launched through Whole foods, the Rite-Aid acquisition would accelerate market share gains and other positive scenarios, said Blackledge in his note to investors.

Morgan Stanley says AMD server opportunity not materially changed by Intel issue
Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore said he does not think that the potential exploit identified in Intel (INTC) processors materially changes the server opportunities for AMD (AMD). Moore notes that IT customers he's spoken with didn't rule out a 35% impact for some workloads, but said that the mainstream impact on Intel processors would be more on the order of 5%. A 5% performance impact, while significant, is not enough to drive CPU preference to AMD, according to Moore, who adds that if the 35% performance hit were correct it could drive consideration for AMD.

Deutsche expects quick response from Intel on Register story
The Register reported yesterday that Intel (INTC) chips from up to the past 10 years have a critical security flaw that AMD (AMD) chips do not have, Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Seymore tells investors in a research note. The analyst says that while he has no incremental insights on the accuracy of the story, he'd be surprised if such a "fundamental flaw" went unnoticed for the duration that the article is highlighting. Further, if the impact to Intel was known and material, the company would likely have disclosed it earlier, Seymore adds. He expects a response from Intel "to be forthcoming relatively quickly." The analyst has a Buy rating on the shares with a $50 price target. Intel in afternoon trading is down 5% to $44.55 while AMD is up 8% to $11.84.

BofA keeps Buy on Intel, but sees AMD benefitting from security issues
Following media reports of chip-level security issues impacting systems powered by Intel (INTC) processors, Bank of American Merrill Lynch analyst Vivek Arya noted that this issue initially surfaced in November and that Intel has maintained dominant share in both servers and PCs for decades despite having faced bugs in the past. Arya maintains a Buy rating on Intel shares, but added that AMD (AMD) could be the most direct beneficiary whether this is a real or a perceived additional risk factor for Intel. If Intel's firmware upgrades slow down its processors, it could give AMD a leg up in 2018, particularly in servers, Arya added.

Citi 'getting more nervous' on semiconductors after Asia trip
Following a trip last week to Asia meeting with companies across the technology supply chain, Citi analyst Christopher Danely says he's "getting more nervous" on the semiconductor sector. While demand from the PC end market remains strong, the NAND market remains weak and data points on Apple's (AAPL) iPhone were mixed, Danely tells investors in a research note. The analyst saw signs of an inventory build and believes upside to consensus estimates is declining. He feels momentum is slowing in the semiconductor space. Danely's top pick is Microchip (MCHP) and he's also Buy-rated on Texas Instruments (TXN), Applied Materials (AMAT), Nvidia (NVDA), Skyworks (SWKS), ON Semiconductor (ON) and Micron (MU). The analyst's checks indicate slower than expected iPhone X and 8 demand but stronger iPhone 7 demand. He views this as bad for Skyworks and Qorvo (QRVO) and good for Analog Devices (ADI).

Morgan Stanley says Tesla Model 3 target shift 'should not at all be a surprise'
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas noted that Tesla posted delivery figures for Q4 that topped his forecast for each model line it offers, including the Model 3, adding that he thinks Tesla pushing out its production target of 5,000 Model 3 per week to the end of Q2 "should not at all be a surprise to the market." Jonas said his Q1 Model 3 delivery forecast of 8,000 units implies a pace of less than 700 per week, but Tesla appears to be currently producing the mass-market car at a pace well ahead of that implied in his earnings model. The analyst, who also noted that the company's Q4 deliveries suggest revenue 10% above his prior forecast, maintains an Equal Weight rating on the shares but said he would "buy the dip" in Tesla if the delayed Model 3 ramp causes weakness.

JPMorgan keeps $185 target on Tesla after production shortfall
JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman reiterates an Underweight rating on Tesla shares with a $185 price target after the company's Model 3 deliveries in Q4 came in at 1,550, well below his 10,000 estimate. The stock in premarket trading is down 3%, or $11.00, to $306.25. The weaker than expected launch is likely the result of too optimistic assumptions on the company's part as regards the ease of manufacturing the Model 3, Brinkman tells investors in a research note titled "Model 3 Ramp Falls Far Short Again - Has Tesla Overestimated its Ease of Manufacture? Reiterate UW." The analyst believes that if the Q3 and Q4 production shortfalls stem from an overestimation of the ease to manufacture, then likely the associated cost to manufacture has been underestimated. He thinks this would reinforce his more bearish outlook on Tesla.
