Cost savings emerge as 'killer app' for artificial intelligence, says KeyBanc

Over the past 35 days, KeyBanc analyst Brent Bracelin hosted meetings at Adobe (ADBE), Autodesk (ADSK), Algorithmia, Cloudera (CLDR), Coupa (COUP), Facebook (FB), Guidewire (GWRE), Netflix (NFLX), NVIDIA (NVDA), Salesforce (CRM), SAP, Synopsys (SNPS), Twilio (TWLO), Tableau (DATA), Talend (TLND), Veeva (VEEV), Workday (WDAY), and Zendesk (ZEN) as part of an AI & Cloud-themed field trip. The analyst notes that cost savings have emerged as the "killer app" for artificial intelligence, and large enterprise interest in migrating back-office apps to cloud has been slow, but is picking up, conversational AI and bot activity is yielding real cost savings. Further, Bracelin sees 2018 as a defining year for enterprise AI applications, and is most impressed by enterprise AI initiatives at Microsoft (MSFT), Zendesk, Guidewire, and Adobe.

Autodesk weakness a buying opportunity, says Baird
Baird analyst Rob Oliver said Autodesk shares were priced for perfection ahead of its Q3 results, sparking a selloff in the shares following the report. The analyst said the weakness is a buying opportunity as subscription metrics were solid. Investors should not 'overreact' to Autodesk Q3 report, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Keith Weiss noted that Autodesk's 146,000 net subscription additions in Q3 fell short of the consensus expectation of 150,000 and that the company lowered its full-year subscription guidance. However, he added that investors should not "overreact" to that data, noting the miss was driven by low value subscriptions amid the company's shift from high volume subscriptions to higher value subscriptions. Weiss is still confident Autodesk can get to an ARR base of $3.3B and keeps a $143 price target and Overweight rating on the shares.

Predicting semiconductor demand for Ethereum challenging, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Mark Li said that predicting the semiconductor demand for Ethereum is challenging, but he estimates mining GPU demand may fall about 30% year-over-year if Ether prices and mining margins both stay constant. However, semiconductor demand would increase "very rapidly" if Ether prices continue rising. Should the price rise to $5,000 and miners maintain similar margins, mining GPU demand would more than quadruple, theoretically representing as much as 13% upside to NVIDIA (NVDA) revenue in 2018 and 23% of AMD's (AMD), barring supply constraints, Li estimates. Consensus already appears to model a very sharp decline in NVIDIA's crypto-specific revenues, but clarity on what is in AMD models "is harder to say," Li added. He thinks the impact of Ethereum on TSMC (TSM) and memory makers such as Micron (MU) is negligible, noting that they are exposed to much broader applications and bigger markets.

Twilio weakness a buying opportunity, says Baird
Baird analyst William Power said the weakness in Twilio (TWLO) is a buying opportunity. The analyst noted shares were weak due to concerns that Amazon (AMZN) Pinpoint and its two-way messaging could compete with Twilio. He said the company confirmed it in fact powers the two-way messaging in addition to supporting multiple other Amazon products. Power said although Amazon could be a Twilio competitor over time, it is also a low percentage of its revenue. Power reiterated his Outperform rating and $39 price target on Twilio shares.

Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Roku (ROKU) downgraded to Underweight from Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley with analyst Benjamin Swinburne telling investors that he believes the market has overreacted following the company's stronger than expected third quarter results. 2. Snap (SNAP) downgraded to Underperform from Market Perform at Cowen with analyst John Blackledge saying Blackledge's Ad Buyer Survey results for Snap were mixed with modest share gains of Social/Video budgets in 2018/19 despite ranking ROI, data, and targeting ranking the lowest. 3. Western Digital (WDC) downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at BMO Capital with analyst Tim Long saying the near-term fundamentals for the company remain healthy, but limited upside for growth in margins and revenue due to a more balanced supply-demand will keep the stock in a trading range. 4. Tableau (DATA) downgraded to Sector Weight from Overweight at KeyBanc with analyst Brent Bracelin saying the risk/reward is more balanced following the 64% rise in shares in 2017. 5. MasterCard (MA) downgraded to Outperform from Top Pick at RBC Capital with analyst Daniel Perlin saying the stock was a "monster" in 2017 with a 47% rise, and his investment thesis of accelerating top-line growth, tailwinds from higher oil prices and favorable FX, and global conversion to electronic payments remains in place. The analyst attributes the downgrade to "repositioning group headings" going into FY18. This list is just a portion of The Fly's full analyst coverage. Veeva expensive near-term but long-term value play, says Canaccord
Canaccord analyst Richard Davis said Veeva shares have underperformed versus the Nasdaq and may be expensive in the near-term, but he sees the value build as real, which should be appreciated by the first half of calendar 2018. The analyst thought its most recent quarter was good and the guidance was conservative and he expects the stock to move higher once investors reach the same conclusion. Davis reiterated his Buy rating and $70 price target on Veeva shares.

Veeva weakness creates buying opportunity, says JMP Securities
JMP Securities analyst Rishi Jaluria says that Veeva reported "strong" Q2 results. The analyst says that the stock may have declined because the company's results, although above the consensus outlook, could have come in below investors' expectations. The analyst adds that although the company did not sign any new customers outside of the life sciences vertical for its Vault system, its momentum in this area "remains strong," as its top five consumer packaged goods customers are expanding their deals with the company. The analyst is more upbeat on the company's outlook following the results and recommends buying the shares on weakness.

Berg maintained his Buy rating and $70 price target on Veeva, citing its confidence in sustaining a 20% growth profile which will allow the company to preserve its valuation multiples into next year.
