On The Fly: What to watch in Tesla earnings report

Tesla (TSLA) is scheduled to report results of its fourth fiscal quarter on February 7, with a conference call scheduled for 5:30 pm EDT. What to watch for: 1. OUTLOOK: During the company's last earnings call, Tesla said it sees production rate of 5,000 Model 3 vehicles per week by late of Q1, and said it sees "about 100,000" Model S and X deliveries in 2017, an increase of 30% compared to 2016. "Notwithstanding these increased deliveries, we plan to produce about 10% fewer Model S and Model X in Q4 compared to Q3 because of the reallocation of some of the manufacturing workforce towards Model 3 production," Tesla added. Additionally, the company said it expects Q4 capital expenditures of approximately $1B. Last month, however, the company announced a 27% year over year increased in Q4 vehicle deliveries, but pushed back its weekly Model 3 production rate goal once again saying it now intends to achieve the 5,000 per week milestone by the end of Q2. 2. MODEL 3: According to a report by CNBC on January 25, citing a number of current and former Tesla employees, additional Model 3 delays should be expected as the company's problems with battery productions at its Gigafactory are worse than it acknowledged. Among the problems are the need to make some of the batteries by hand and borrowing scores of employees from one of its suppliers to help with the manual assembly, sources said. 3. TRUCKS: On November 16, Tesla launched its electric semitrailer truck, and unveiled a new Roadster sports car with speeds of 1.9 seconds for 0 to 60. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the company's electric semi truck will be in production by 2019. The following day, J.B. Hunt Transport Services (JBHT) announced that it placed a reservation to purchase multiple Tesla semi tractors. More companies have since confirmed semi truck orders, including Walmart (WMT), Deutsche Post's (DPSGY) DHL, Anheuser-Busch (BUD), PepsiCo (PEP), and UPS (UPS). 4. CASH BURN: On November 22, Bloomberg said that Tesla's latest announcement of designing a sports car should take a back seat to investors' focus of the company's cash burn, estimating that at the current rate, Tesla would be out of cash by August 6th. Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Kevin Tynan estimates that the company may have to raise at least $2B in fresh capital by mid-2018. The report added that the bond market route may not be welcoming, as Tesla investors who bought $1.8B in debt 3 months ago remain under water. 5. NEW PERFORMANCE AWARD: In late January, Tesla announced a new 10-year performance award for CEO Elon Musk with vesting entirely contingent on achieving market cap and operational milestones. In order to fully vest, Tesla's market cap would have to grow to $650B, an increase of almost $600B, and important revenue and profitability goals would also have to be achieved. Musk will receive no guaranteed compensation of any kind -- no salary, no cash bonuses and no equity that vests simply by the passage of time. Instead, his only compensation will be a 100% at-risk performance award, which ensures that he will be compensated only if Tesla and all of its shareholders do well. The performance award consists of a 10-year grant of stock options that vests in 12 tranches. Each of the 12 tranches vest only if a pair of milestones is met.

UBS says Tesla cash burn likely moderating, reiterates Sell rating
UBS analyst Colin Langan previewed Tesla's Q4 results and said he is forecasting earnings to fall, driven by lower gross margins due to unallocated Model 3 overhead/labor and higher interest. He reiterated that the Model 3 delays could lead to a capital raise, but he expects the cash burn rate to moderate. Langan reiterated his Sell rating and $195 price target on Tesla shares.

Jefferies cuts 2018 revenue estimate for Tesla by 14% on slow Model 3 ramp
Jefferies analyst Philippe Houchois lowered his fiscal 2018 Model 3 delivery forecast by 35% to 175,000 units and expects production of 12,5,00 units in Q1 and 26,000 units in Q2. The analyst believes his Q2 estimate is consistent with Tesla achieving a run rate of 5,000 units per week around June. Houchois also cut his 2018 revenue estimate by 14% to $20.8B but keeps his operating loss around $800M. Tesla will guide for lower capex in 2018 given delayed ramp-up to 10,000 Model 3 units per week, the analyst tells investors in a research note titled "Another Curve Ball." He believes the new compensation plan for CEO Elon Musk sends "mixed signals." Musk looks "overly incentivised on valuation multiples rather than financial performance as the implied margin does not support current or future multiples once growth eventually normalizes," Houchois contends. He keeps an Underperform rating on Tesla with a $240 price target. The stock closed yesterday up $1.23 to $352.79.

Tesla performance plan for Musk a marketing tool, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said he sees Tesla CEO Elon Musk's long-term incentive plan as an "aspirational marketing tool" to attract talent and capital as competition increases in both electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles. The operational targets provide an incentive for Tesla to be a very large company, the plan leaves flexibility for it to find a new CEO and the mega-cap milestones are meant to "capture the spirit of the bull market," said Jonas, who believes the true financial incentive to Musk is open to debate given how he is already "all in" on Tesla. He views the package as more important to investor confidence than to Musk financially, added Jonas, who keeps an Equal Weight rating on the shares.

J.B. Hunt price target raised to $145 from $116 at Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Rick Paterson raised his price target on J.B. Hunt to $145 and kept his Buy rating after Q4 earnings, citing the positive impact from the U.S. corporate tax rate changes. The analyst contends that while the 2017 operating margin of 9.3% was a 7-year low, it should be the bottom, and also expects revenue growth to improve due to better macro conditions and anticipated price increases in the second half of this year. Paterson calls J.B. Hunt one of his "preferred names within the transports".

Goldman upgrades Walmart to Conviction Buy ahead of 'meaningful' dividend raise
Goldman Sachs analyst Matthew Fassler upgraded Walmart to Buy and added the shares to his firm's Conviction List. He upped his price target for the retailing giant to $117 from $115. Walmart closed yesterday up $2.01 to $102.70. Selling consumables to middle-income consumers in small markets remains a compelling strategic position, Fassler tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes that while most of retail is still subject to significant disruption, Walmart "is still very much in control of its own destiny." He expects a "meaningful" dividend raise as Walmart redeploys cash from tax savings, and repatriated overseas cash.

Tractor Supply worries about Amazon risk overblown, for now, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman said his survey of 800 consumers living within 20 miles of a Tractor Supply (TSCO) store suggests there is no cause for immediate concern about the e-commerce threat in pet food, but there are "warning signs that bear watching." Chewy.com, Walmart.com (WMT) and Amazon (AMZN) are gaining significant traction online in pet food and the evolution of shopping patterns could pose a long-term risk to Tractor Supply, though the e-commerce risk does not appear imminent, said Gutman, who keeps an Equal Weight rating on Tractor Supply shares.

Barclays analyst Karen Short raised her price target for Walmart to $120 despite lowering her earnings estimates for the retailer. Short dropped her fiscal 2019 earnings per share estimate to $5.20 from $5.40 to reflect the increase in U.S. starting wages, the closure of certain Sam's Club stores and "increased visibility" into the U.S. tax rate. The analyst notes, however, that she didn't raise her price target for Walmart shares when increasing estimates for the entire sector due to tax reform. Short keeps an Overweight rating on Walmart.

Citi says all Transports win under U.S. tax bill
The Tax Cut and Jobs Act drives a "meaningful step up" in earnings as well as free cash flow for essentially all names in Transportation, Citi analyst Christian Wetherbee tells investors in a research note. He sees U.S. Rails as likely the biggest winners from tax reform. In most cases companies will use the cash "windfall" for buybacks, Wetherbee tells investors in a research note. He believes, however, that a compelling case can be made for U.S. Rails to increase dividends by 15%-20%. The free cash flow windfall could save UPS's (UPS) buyback program, which looked likely to decline in 2018 under the weight of accelerating capex, the analyst adds. Wetherbee upgraded C.H. Robinson Worldwide (CHRW) to Buy and downgraded Schneider National (SNCR) to Neutral. He also raised his price target for Buy-rated FedEx (FDX) to $304 from $280, Buy-rated CSX (CSX) to $64 from $58 and for Buy-rated UPS to $143 from $128.

Amazon appears headed toward direct competition with parcel carriers, says Morgan Stanley
Following a Capitol Forum report that said Amazon (AMZN) is asking multi-carrier shipping software platforms to add it as a carrier option for vendors before the end of 2018, Morgan Stanley analysts Ravi Shanker and Brian Nowak said this would be the latest development in the e-commerce giant's push to become an independent logistics/parcel company and would be a quick evolution. The analysts do not know how Amazon's reported offering might price against the incumbents, but their work estimates that it could be up to 2/3rd cheaper than UPS (UPS) at like density, they tell investors. The analysts remain concerned about secular competitive threats facing UPS and FedEx (FDX), but said they do not believe Amazon has, or wants to build, a network of the scale of the incumbent parcel carriers.
