NASDAQ comp briefly rolled over into the red
NASDAQ comp briefly rolled over into the red, pulling the blue chips back down from highs though the Dow is still hanging on to a 1% gain on the day and the S&P +0.5% about half of that. The VIX equity volatility index is still 4.5% lower near 19.15, but above earlier lows of 18.07. Europe closed mixed with a fractional gain on the Euro Stoxx 50 and a 0.4% loss on the UK FTSE 100. Among the biggest index declines have been on NASDAQ telecom -0.9%, banking -0.65% and insurance sectors -0.5%, while Dow transports +0.9% and utilities +1% are outperforming. Within the Dow the top gainers are UT +3.3%, CAT +2.1% and Exxon +1.9%, while deepest decliners are Cisco -0.7%, Goldman -0.3% and Intel -0.3%. Cautious Fed Bullard comments helped bolster the Dow, though others like Quarles stuck to their tightening guns. Toys R Us announced another 200 store closures. Roku is still 16.4% lower after lowering guidance.
