Citi initiates 'negative catalyst watch' on Intuit
Citi analyst Walter Pritchard initiated a "negative catalyst watch" on Intuit saying his firm's latest proprietary tax survey leaves him "unconvinced" around the unit drivers of the company's TurboTax business. Survey results suggest both a plateauing of digital share amongst overall filers as well as minimal headroom for TurboTax to take share within the digital category, Pritchard tells investors in a research note. He believes buy-side expectations for Intuit's tax business exceed his growth expectations for the company and that shares are at risk if the low-end of fiscal 2018 guide is achieved. The analyst raised his price target for Intuit shares to $170 from $157 and keeps a Neutral rating on the name.

Morgan Stanley sees opportunities in biotech amid 'limited' investor conviction
With clinical catalysts in large-cap Biotechnology limited to only five key Phase III readouts - three of which are from Alexion (ALXN) - investors are describing their 2018 picks in the space as the "least worst" of the group, according to Morgan Stanley analyst Matthew Harrison. However, he believes this lack of conviction creates real opportunity for outsized moves in 2018, with Amgen (AMGN) identified by Harrison as the biggest potential beneficiary of M&A given "its likely newfound access" to about $39B in offshore cash. Other biotech names the analyst highlights on the up side include Biogen (BIIB), BioMarin (BMRN), Biohaven (BHVN) and Sarepta (SRPT). Meanwhile, Harrison highlights his concerns about potential downside for BioVerativ (BIVV) and Innoviva (INVA), on both of which he keeps Underweight ratings.

Citi downgrades stance on large-cap Biotechnology to Neutral
Citi analyst Robyn Karnauskas downgraded her view on the large-cap Biotechnology sector to Neutral heading into 2018. The negative sentiment on the space may not change in the near term as valuations are not cheap and there are few catalysts in 2018, Karnauskas tells investors in a research note. Valuations in the group do not appear cheap when you look at the growth profile of large-cap biotech versus the broader market, the analyst contends. She believes the "only way out for the sector is innovation," and prefers to move to the sidelines "until we see something there." Where Karnauskas does see upside in 2018 is in shares of Alexion (ALXN), BioMarin (BMRN), Vertex (VRTX) and Tesaro (TSRO).

General Dynamics (GD) downgraded to Underweight from Neutral at JPMorgan, with analyst Seth Seifman saying Gulfstream questions are unlikely to be resolved in the near term. Demand for G500/600 is ok for now, but uncertainty about ultimate production levels and the pace of the learning curve mean the transition will remain a near term overhang, the analyst said. Seifman also downgraded Raytheon (RTN) to Neutral from Underweight. 3. Adobe (ADBE), Barracuda (CUDA), GoDaddy (GDDY), Fortinet (FTNT) and Check Point (CHKP) downgraded to Neutral from Overweight and CoStar Group (CSGP), Imperva (IMPV) and Monotype Imaging (TYPE) downgraded to Underweight from Overweight at JPMorgan by analyst Sterling Auty in conjunction with his 2018 annual outlook for Software Technology. The analyst does not expect the "exceptional performance" in Software during 2017 to repeat in 2018. 4. Spark Therapeutics (ONCE) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at UBS, with analyst Carter Gould seeing a "challenging setup" for the shares after the Phase 1/2 SPK-8011 data in hemophilia A fell short of expectations. The analyst removed SPK-8011, or $29 per share, and early-stage pipeline value, or $12 per share, from his model. He finds it difficult to be more constructive on Spark shares in the near-term. 5. VeriSign weakness only partial read through for GoDaddy, says JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Sterling Auty says shares of GoDaddy (GDDY) fell yesterday after VeriSign's (VRSN) domain name additions for the December quarter came in below expectations. Weakness related to renewals of Chinese names is likely part of the reason for the shortfall, but GoDaddy's exposure to the country is still very small, Auty tells investors in a research note. The analyst views VeriSign's weakness as only a partial read through for GoDaddy and notes the company's data is only an indicator of .com and .net. There are hundreds of other domains, Auty points out. He keeps a Neutral rating on GoDaddy shares.

HCSC removes prior authorization for Cologuard, says William Blair
William Blair analyst Brian Weinstein says he came across an update from Health Care Service Corporation, or HCSC, the fourth-largest private health insurer in the country with 15M members. The company operates through Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans in Illinois, Montana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The update removes the prior authorization requirement for Exact Sciences' Cologuard, effective January 15, Weinstein tells investors in a weekly research note on the healthcare space. He believes the update has to do with an acknowledgment that a cancer screening test should not be subject to prior authorization requirements or possibly some broader collaboration between Exact and HCSC. The analyst thinks the development helps validate the use of Cologuard as a front-line screen in an average-risk population, but he does not expect it to have any near-term impact on Exact Sciences' volumes or revenue. Weinstein has an Outperform rating on Exact shares. The stock in premarket trading is down 2% to $49.00 and Goldman Sachs initiated the name with a Neutral rating and $51 price target.

Trade Desk pullback on AT&T speculation a buying opportunity, says Susquehanna
Susquehanna analyst Shyam Patil attributes the pullback in Trade Desk (TTD) to speculation that AT&T (T) may be building its own demand-side platform, or DSP, but he does not think this is the case. Patil believes the market misinterpreted comments made by AT&T about plans to build out its own automated advertising platform. He actually thinks AT&T is building out its own supply-side platform, or SSP, which most likely would integrate into DSPs, such as Trade Desk, over time. Also, Patil does not think AT&T is a relevant DSP customer for Trade Desk. The analyst keeps a Positive rating on Trade Desk and recommend buying on the pullback.

Trade Desk business momentum ramping, says Susquehanna
Susquehanna analyst Shyam Patil said Trade Desk's "triple 3," which are its three deals with over $3B in combined business and spend, help provide visibility heading into 2018. He believes the three clients' budgets will likely be additive over time and could ramp more quickly than past large deals. The analyst also does not believe consensus EBITDA properly factors in investments, but that matters less as the company is a near-term growth story. Patil reiterated his Positive rating and $70 price target on Trade Desk shares.

On The Fly: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Snap (SNAP) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Citi with analyst Mark May saying the recent flagship app redesign could produce positive long-term benefits, but the "significant jump" in negative app reviews since the redesign was pushed out a few weeks could result in a decline in users and user engagement, and could negatively impact financial results. 2. Wingstop (WING) downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at Baird with analyst David Tarantino citing the recent surge in the shares, which has left less room for upside on a near-term basis. 3. Northrop Grumman (NOC) downgraded to Buy from Conviction Buy at Goldman Sachs with analyst Noah Poponak citing valuation. 4. JPMorgan sees few catalysts for Shire (SHPG), downgrades shares to Neutral with analyst James Gordon saying he sees few catalysts in 2018 and 2019 beyond a potential NeuroScience spinoff, which he does not see as creating fundamental value. 5. Teck Resources (TECK) downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at Macquarie with analyst Matt Murphy citing valuation. This list is just a portion of The Fly's full analyst coverage.
