Samsung now sees Bixby-powered smart smeaker launching in 2H18, WSJ says

Samsung's (SSNLF) attempt to take on Apple's (AAPL) HomePod, Amazon's (AMZN) Alexa and Alphabet's (GOOG) Google Home will arrive later than originally expected, after Samsung's mobile chief said that the Bixby-powered audio device will be making its debut in the second half of this year, The Wall Street Journal reports. D.J. Koh, the head of Samsung's mobile division, informed the Journal that its attempt to enter the digital assistant-equipped smart speaker market will launch in the second half of 2018. The interview, which primarily focuses on the recently-revealed Galaxy S9, confirms the smart speaker is still being developed, but will hit the market later than the first half of this year, as initially reported in December. Mizuho remains a buyer of Micron after Samsung results, DRAM/NAND pricing
Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh notes that January DRAM contract prices up 5% month over month, with expectation of March quarter pricing up 5%, while NAND pricing continues to rise up 0%-3% month over month for SLC NAND in January. Additionally, the analyst points out Samsung (SSNLF) reported results last night and noted its Q1 DRAM supply could slow down with Line 11 conversions, while full year DRAM supply demand is "sound." Rakesh sees this as overall positive for peer Micron (MU) and remains a buyer of the stock.

Immersion price target raised to $17 from $15 at Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Anthony Stoss says Immersion's (IMMR) guidance for 2018 is better than expected on the heels of the settlement Apple (AAPL) settlement. In a research note to clients, Stoss, who raised his price target to $17 from $15 and has a Buy rating on shares, said the implied Apple settlement appears to be towards the high end or above his previous $25M-$30M expectation. Due to ASC606 accounting, a portion of the Apple settlement will be taken in Q1 with the rest ratable over the life of the contract. He also noted that litigation spend guidance was a vast improvement vs. actual spend in 2017. He looks for additional pending lawsuit settlements with Samsung (SSNLF), Fitbit (FIT) and Motorola (MSI) in the coming months and years, penetration into new markets like China and growing adoption in automotive to drive the stock.

Strong finish by Samsung should drive Universal Display results, says Cowen
Cowen analyst Robert Stone noted Samsung (SSNLF) had a strong finish to 2017, which he sees as suggesting upside to Q4 results for Universal Display (OLED) shares. The analyst expects Universal's Q4 to be above consensus driven by Samsung's strong flexible AMOLED shipments. He also sees further penetration of Samsung branded products, at least two new iPhone models, and mobile capacity ramping by LG Display. Stone reiterated his Outperform rating and $225 price target on Universal Display shares.

Universal Display upgraded to Buy at Needham on valuation
As reported earlier, Needham analyst James Ricchiuti upgraded Universal Display (OLED) to Buy from Hold with a $180 price target. The analyst says that he has been looking for the right entry point on the stock since the summer, and the recent 25% selloff from the high offers that opportunity. While expectations for Q4 results this week are more cautious amid the anxiousness around the Samsung (SSNLF) and Apple (AAPL) ramp, the positives of the new Samsung license agreement in hand and capacity ramping in Korea and China over the next two years outweigh the concerns.

Apple resumed with a Market Perform at Raymond James
Raymond James analyst Chris Caso resumed Apple with a Market Perform rating, saying investors now know there is no "supercycle" for this round of the iPhone and he believes consensus expectations have been set appropriately lower. He thinks a "massive" cash return program announcement in April will be the next catalyst for the stock, but also does not see this as a reason to be overweight the stock as he believes it is well anticipated.

iPhone X share gains accelerated in China in January, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty noted that Apple's 12% iPhone shipment growth in China last quarter was the company's second largest sequential share gain in China. According to smartphone data aggregating firm Jiguang, iPhone's overall active smartphone user share downticked in China in early January from recent highs, though iPhone X share gains accelerated in China during the month, Huberty tells investors. While acknowledging that iPhone is not seeing the "supercycle" she previously expected, Huberty still sees 4% total iPhone unit growth to 226M units estimated in FY18 and believes accelerating adoption of the highest end iPhone in China, the world's largest smartphone market, can drive active smartphone market share gains, she said. Huberty has an Overweight rating and $203 price target on Apple shares.

Morgan Stanley says Walmart may need investment step up to compete with Amazon
Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman said Walmart's (WMT) e-commerce systems and infrastructure were not equipped to handle seasonal demand. For context, he noted that in the fourth quarter of 2015, Amazon (AMZN) endured execution issues related to greater than expected Fulfilled By Amazon demand. However, Amazon's issues at that time resulted in cost pressure, whereas Walmart's resulted in lost sales, Gutman tells investors. He thinks any solution will result in increased spending by Walmart, either through software, logistics or new fulfillment centers. Additionally, Walmart faces an uphill battle in resonating with a broader base of e-commerce consumers, which may require stepped up marking spending, he adds. Gutman lowered his price target on Walmart to $99 from $106 and keeps his Equal Weight rating on the shares.

As previously reported, Wolfe Research analyst Scott Mushkin upgraded Amazon.com to Outperform from Peer Perform and set a calendar year-end 2018 price target of $2,000 on the stock. He believes that if Amazon can "get grocery right," it can lead to unprecedented growth, create a halo effect for the rest of Amazon's categories and drive stronger than expected revenue growth, Mushkin tells investors. The analyst, who predicts Amazon can grow its North American EBIT margins to 8% by 2028, sees the implications for other retailers, especially those who offer staples, as "very negative."

On The Fly: Top five analyst upgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. UPS (UPS) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Loop Capital by analyst Rick Paterson, who attributed the recent selloff, in part, to news on February 9 that Amazon (AMZN) plans to offer some limited parcel delivery services to third parties. The analyst believes concerns around Amazon "may be a little overblown." Paterson believes Amazon represents about 4%-6% of "lower margin" revenues at UPS. If all of that is ultimately brought into Amazon's own network, "that's hardly a disaster," he contended. 2. Schlumberger (SLB) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at BofA/Merrill by analyst Timna Tanners, who said shares underperformed and fund ownership fell in 2017 as investor focus shifted towards more shale-focused names. Tanners believes the oil/gas price recovery cycle will shift focus to International with activity slowing recovering and pricing firming more in 2019. Further, the analyst believes SPM's contribution is underappreciated and expects a project payoff and/or stake sale in 2019. 3. HP Inc (HPQ) upgraded to Overweight from Neutral at JPMorgan by analyst Paul Coster, who cited valuation following the company's Q1 results. The analyst believes the shares may now look attractive for value investors and sees U.S. tax reform and foreign currency moves as tailwinds. 4. Finish Line (FINL) upgraded to Positive from Neutral at Susquehanna by analyst Sam Poser, who said channel checks indicate that sales and promotional trends in Q4 were not as bad as its guidance anticipated. He believes management has better positioned the company's marketing and promotional calendar as an adjustment to the late tax refund checks. 5. Duke Energy (DUK) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Deutsche Bank (DB) by analyst Jonathan Arnold, who said Friday's constructive order from the North Carolina Utilities Commission in the Duke Energy Progress rate case effectively allows recovery of a majority of the utility's historical costs related to coal ash basin closures. He sees the order as largely resolving the outstanding regulatory risk associated with coal ash cost recovery in North Carolina and likely offering a positive read-across to the larger Duke Energy Carolinas rate case. Twitter price target raised to $28 from $15 at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak said he underestimated Twitter's (TWTR) turnaround efforts throughout 2017 and he has raised his price target on the stock to $28 from $15 given the company's better revenue outlook and high incremental margins. However, despite Twitter's better than expected results, he still sees the stock being a relative underperformer from current levels when compared to faster growing peers like Facebook (FB) and Alphabet (GOOGL), he tells investors. Nowak keeps an Underweight rating on Twitter.

Craig-Hallum remains a buyer of Nutrisystem as Google trends continue to lag
Craig-Hallum analyst Alex Fuhrman says Nutrisystem (NTRI) Google (GOOG; GOOGL) trends continue to lag, setting up a buying opportunity despite mixed indicators. Mixed indicators suggest the Nutrisystem brand is not likely to accelerate revenue growth in 2018 from 2017's 23% levels, however the analyst believes there is still strong potential to exceed his estimate of about 11% growth for the brand in 2018. He reiterates a Buy rating and $80 price target on Nutrisystem's shares.

Apple (AAPL) was downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Bernstein and to Sector Weight from Overweight at KeyBanc. 2. Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Stifel with analyst Scott Devitt citing fourth quarter results and saying he has some longer-term concerns around competition from Amazon (AMZN), Google Cloud Platform market share, regulatory risk and rising traffic acquisition cost. 3. Hershey (HSY) downgraded to Neutral from Outperform at Credit Suisse with analyst Robert Moskow saying the stock deserves a "more narrow" valuation premium to food peers than in the past due to the deceleration of its growth rate and the stagnation of its profit margin. 4. Impinj (PI) was downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Dougherty, to Hold from Buy at Needham and Canaccord, and to Sector Perform from Outperform at RBC Capital. 5. Tractor Supply (TSCO) downgraded to Underperform from Buy at BofA/Merrill with analyst Elizabeth Suzuki saying the fourth quarter results were strong, but the outlook for 2018 was disappointing as management outlined expectations for operating margin compression and a store growth trajectory. Alphabet price target raised to $1,355 from $1,210 at MKM Partners
MKM Partners analyst Rob Sanderson raised his price target on Alphabet to $1,355 and kept his Buy rating on strong Q4 revenue momentum in spite of the miss on margins. Given its sensitivity to margin trends, the analyst notes that the stock "corrected meaningfully" after the Q4 report while also underperforming the Nasdaq. Sanderson believes that the stock could still "benefit meaningfully from additional disclosure on some of the key growth assets and investment areas", such the company's latest announcement of Google Cloud revenue reaching $1B per quarter, though he does not see further transparency into assets such as YouTube on the horizon.
