On The Fly: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Juno Therapeutics (JUNO) downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Wells Fargo, with analyst Jim Birchenough saying that while data for JCAR017 continue to support a potential best-in-class profile in aggressive lymphoma, the current valuation already reflects dominant market positioning over Gilead's (GILD) Yescarta. 2. General Dynamics (GD) downgraded to Underweight from Neutral at JPMorgan, with analyst Seth Seifman saying Gulfstream questions are unlikely to be resolved in the near term. Demand for G500/600 is ok for now, but uncertainty about ultimate production levels and the pace of the learning curve mean the transition will remain a near term overhang, the analyst said. Seifman also downgraded Raytheon (RTN) to Neutral from Underweight. 3. Adobe (ADBE), Barracuda (CUDA), GoDaddy (GDDY), Fortinet (FTNT) and Check Point (CHKP) downgraded to Neutral from Overweight and CoStar Group (CSGP), Imperva (IMPV) and Monotype Imaging (TYPE) downgraded to Underweight from Overweight at JPMorgan by analyst Sterling Auty in conjunction with his 2018 annual outlook for Software Technology. The analyst does not expect the "exceptional performance" in Software during 2017 to repeat in 2018. 4. Spark Therapeutics (ONCE) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at UBS, with analyst Carter Gould seeing a "challenging setup" for the shares after the Phase 1/2 SPK-8011 data in hemophilia A fell short of expectations. The analyst removed SPK-8011, or $29 per share, and early-stage pipeline value, or $12 per share, from his model. He finds it difficult to be more constructive on Spark shares in the near-term. 5. Electronic Arts (EA) downgraded to Buy from Conviction Buy at Goldman Sachs by analyst Christopher Merwin to reflect fewer near-term catalysts around in-game monetization of non-sports titles. Fortinet, Proofpoint targets raised after positive checks at JMP Securities
JMP Securities analyst Erik Suppiger said his industry discussions lead him to believe the cyber-security spending environment has been relatively healthy and that security remains top of mind for enterprise buyers. Demand for internal security technologies that monitor and detect intrusions or technologies that add additional layers of security for specific assets is benefiting vendors such as CyberArk Software (CYBR), Proofpoint (PFPT), and Imperva (IMPV), Suppiger said. Given his positive channel checks and an appreciation in valuation multiples, Suppiger raised his price target on Proofpoint to $115 from $95 and on Fortinet (FTNT) to $54 from $41.

Deere (DE) upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Baird with analyst Mig Dobre noting he recently downgraded the shares on concerns another record corn crop would pressure prices and push out or moderate the recovery in North American agricultural equipment demand. He acknowledged those fears did not materialize as equipment demand in October was very strong with ag dealers pointing to emerging replacement demand in spite of low crop prices. Dobre raised his price target to $155 from $140 on Deere shares. 3. Amber Road rejection of bid likely start, not end, of process, says Stifel
Stifel analyst Tom Roderick noted the speed with which Amber Road rejected the unsolicited $10.50/share takeover offer made public by E2Open, which he reads as an indication that the bid had "already been rejected behind closed doors, or at the very least, was under slow consideration." Jefferies sees more upside in Software stocks despite 'rich' valuations
Despite "rich" valuations, Software stocks have room for appreciation, Jefferies analyst John DiFucci tells investors in a research note. The analyst says "secular forces" are as positive as he's seen in nearly two decades of covering Software due to advances in foundational computing tech, while cyclical forces "are also on the upswing." Lower corporate tax rates will benefit some in the sector while repatriation may benefit all, DiFucci contends. The analyst's top picks for 2018 are Oracle (ORCL), Palo Alto Networks (PANW) and Apptio (APTI). He upgraded this morning Alarm.com (ALRM) and Nice (NICE) to Buy from Hold while downgrading Symantec (SYMC) to Underperform from Hold. The analyst also raised his price target for Buy-rated RingCentral (RNG) to $60 from $52, Buy-rated Splunk (SPLK) to $105 from $88 and Buy-rated VMware (VMW) to $165 from $140.
