Oppenheimer gives large boost to price targets for Home Depot and Lowe's
Oppenheimer analyst Brian Nagel raised his price target for Home Depot (HD) to $205 from $115 and for Lowe's (LOW) to $178 from $100. After reevaluating the underlying trends in the home improvement space, the analyst believes the stocks of both companies remain attractive. Corporate tax reform in the U.S. "implies a step-function higher" in earnings power for Home Depot and Lowe's, and should empower the companies to even more aggressively return capital to shareholders, Nagel contends. He recommends using any pullback in the stocks from the return to normal winter weather as a buying opportunity.

Lowe's upgraded to Buy from Hold at Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Daniel Binder upgraded Lowe's (LOW) to Buy and raised his price target for the shares to $129 from $81. The analyst also calls Lowe's his Franchise Pick for 2018. His "deep-dive" analysis suggests the company can double EBIT and triple earnings within five years. "New agents for change will give rise to good strategic decisions, improved execution and stronger sales and profitability," Binder tells investors in a research note. He believes much of Lowe's margin gap to Home Depot (HD) can close with improvements in sales per square foot.

TJX (TJX) downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Wells Fargo with analyst Ike Boruchow saying Marmaxx has simply become too big to generate share gains similar to years past. 3. Honeywell (HON) downgraded to Sector Perform from Outperform at RBC Capital with analyst Deane Dray saying the stock is likely to "take a breather" this year after a solid run in 2017, adding that despite the potential margin upside, the positive catalysts of "Turbo/Homes spin announcements and CEO transition" have played out. 4. Pinnacle West (PNW) downgraded to Underperform from Neutral at BofA/Merrill with analyst Julien Dumoulin-Smith saying valuation is priced at the "pinnacle" and sees risks that a -$1.3B CapEx budget still results in earnings closer to -5% on a net basis, and potential downside to Street estimates of between 5c-10c. 5. TJX stands to benefit from Bon-Ton closures, says Morgan Stanley
After analyzing which department stores and off-price retailers have the greatest overlap with troubled retailer Bon-Ton Stores (BONT), Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger found that over 40% of Bon-Ton's have a TJX (TJX) concept within a one mile radius and she sees it as the retailer that could benefit the most from a Bon-Ton liquidity event. Though Sears (SHLD) has the greatest overlap overall, there is no evidence to suggest it, nor Kohl's (KSS) and J.C. Penney (JCP), have been able to capitalize on Bon-Ton's struggles so far, added Greenberger.

TJX concerns brings buying opportunity, says Citi
Citi analyst Paul Lejuez says sentiment has turned cautious on TJX (TJX) following the company's weak Q3 comp. The stock has underperformed most Specialty Softlines peers over the past three months and the multiple gap with Ross Stores (ROST) is now the widest it has been in 10 years, Lejuez tells investors in a research note. He believes the concerns weighing on TJX shares presents a buying opportunity. The analyst feels the company can quickly fix the fashion miss that dragged Marmaxx's comp down in Q3. He points out that the company has been winning market share along with Amazon.com (AMZN). It's the weaker players, like mall-based department stores, that are losing to Amazon, Lejuez argues. He keeps a Buy rating on TJX with a $96 price target.

Deutsche sees rifamycin as possible long-term threat to Valeant
The outlook for Valeant Pharmaceuticals' (VRX) Xifaxan, which represents 13% of the company's revenue, improved last year following safety issues for competitor Viberzi and delays for generic challenger Teva (TEVA), Deutsche Bank analyst Gregg Gilbert tells investors in a research note. More recently, the analyst notes, questions have been raised as to whether Cosmo's rifamycin could pose a threat to Xifaxan, either in the near term from off-label prescribing for irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, or longer term if eventually approved for IBS-D. After due diligence, Gilbert believes rifamycin could potentially be a longer-term threat to Xifaxan if it works for IBS-D, but he does not see "material risk" from off-label use in the interim. His model continues to assume mid-single digit Xifaxan sales growth for several years and a generic cliff in 2025. The analyst keeps a Hold rating on Valeant with a $20 price target.

The analyst raises his price target to $49 from $43 despite the downgrade, noting that the company is an attractive target thanks to its portfolio of strong snacking brands, margin expansion potential, and the presence of multiple likely suitors.

Office Depot turnaround potential keeps BofA/Merrill at Buy
BofA Merrill Lynch noted that Office Depot's revenue declines in both its commercial and retail segments were worse than the firm had anticipated, but the firm remains positive on the company's ability to grow in adjacent categories and services and expects sales declines will moderate through the year. The firm keeps a Buy rating and $6 price target on Office Depot shares.

Loop struggles to see long-term rationale for Office Depot buying Staples stores
After the New York Post said Staples (SPLS) has held talks to sell its 1,500 North American retail stores to Office Depot (ODP), Anthony Chukumba said he believes buying the stores would result in significant synergies for Office Depot and could make near-term sense, but he has a hard time understanding the long-term strategic rationale to "double down" on the secularly declining retail business. Any short-term benefits would be more than offset by the negative long-term implications, believes Chukumba, who keeps a Hold rating on Office Depot shares.

Chico's downgraded to Peer Perform at Wolfe Research
As previously reported, Wolfe Research downgraded Chico's to Peer Perform from Outperform following the Q1 report. The analyst said sales-to-inventory growth turned negative in the quarter, sees a slow recovery in fixing industry excess supply, and potential margin pressures as they redirect product direction.

Chico's downgraded to Underperform from Neutral at BofA/Merrill
BofA/Merrill analyst Lorraine Hutchinson downgraded Chico's to Underperform and cut its price target to $7.50 from $8.50 saying the premium multiple is unwarranted. The analyst still expects operating margin declines due to weak sales and promotional pressures and said the recent run in shares is a function of a broader retail rally rather than improving fundamentals.

Neutral
Chico's downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Citi
Citi analyst Paul Lejuez downgraded Chico's FAS (CHS) to Neutral and cut his price target for the shares to $8 from $10. The first half of 2017 has been a "big disappointment" with "no turnaround in sight," Lejuez tells investors in a research note. He believes the "sudden sales slowdown" at competitor J.Jill (JILL) "casts a darker cloud on the women's segment as a whole."

Citi stays bullish on Stratasys after yesterday's Q3 results
Citi analyst Kenneth Wong believes Stratasys' earnings beat in Q3 compensates for the large deal slippage. The analyst maintains a Buy rating on the shares with a $29 price target citing stronger earnings power. He believes sentiment on the 3D printing sector still negative and that the upcoming Formnext conference could serve as a catalyst.

FBR downgrades 3D Systems to Sell, Stratasys to Neutral
FBR Capital analyst Christopher Van Horn downgraded 3D Systems (DDD) to Neutral from Buy and cut his price target for the shares to $7 from $18 following last night's Q3 earnings report. Negative mix and a highly competitive marketplace lower the company's near-term revenue expansion opportunity, Van Horn tells investors in a research note. He thinks the earnings results "exposed a variety of factors" that could continue to weigh on the shares in the near term. In addition, the analyst downgraded Stratasys (SSYS) to Neutral from Buy and reduced his price target for the shares to $30 from $33. The analyst tempered his outlook for the company following 3D's report and notes the stock is up over 30% this year. He's "comfortable" taking chips off the table at current levels. 3D Systems in morning trading is down 27% to $9.04 while Stratasys is down 5% to $21.32.

He lowered his price target for the shares to $31 from $39 but reiterates an Overweight rating on Stratasys.
