Morgan Stanley compares automakers to Facebook, Apple in 'Auto 2.0' model

Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas noted that auto companies' valuations have compressed to extremely low levels, but he believes that a move from a vehicle ownership model to a transportation subscriber model could expand the revenue opportunities for the potential "tollkeepers" for the monetization of content and data by "nearly an order of magnitude." Looking at U.S. technology leaders Facebook (FB) and Apple (AAPL), which are both valued on their installed base/subscriber models, can "offer valuable clues" regarding the opportunity for General Motors (GM) and other auto OEMs, said Jonas. Viewing the OEMs though the lens of a subscription model, which should be less cyclical and potentially less capital intensive over time than the current auto model, is relevant to analyzing auto stocks, according to Jonas, who adds that it is still too early to call a winner or loser in "Auto 2.0." Other publicly traded legacy automakers include Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), Ford (F), Honda (HMC), Nissan (NSANY), Toyota (TM), Volkswagen (VLKAY) and Daimler (DDAIF).

Morgan Stanley says Cadillac, worth $13B to GM, can't be ignored for long
General Motors does not disclose profitability by brand, but Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas believes Cadillac is probably larger and more profitable than recognized by most investors, he stated in a new note. The analyst, who values Cadillac at about $13B, or roughly $9 per GM share, believes this value cannot be ignored for long and he sees room for GM's current efforts to improve financial and strategic transparency for the brand to gain momentum. Jonas keeps an Equal Weight rating on GM shares.

January to be busy for Autos and Shared Mobility names, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas previewed the January calendar for the Autos and Shared Mobility sector, noting that the Vegas CES takes place in the second week and the Detroit Auto Show occurs in the third week of next month. Judging from last year's shows and press releases in recent weeks, he expects "the vast majority" of prepared presentations will focus on autonomous driving, electric propulsion and new business models as companies seek to encourage recognition and valuation of "Auto 2.0 efforts" in the multiples of their stocks, he tells investors. Automakers covered by the firm include Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), Tesla (TSLA), General Motors (GM), Ferrari (RACE) and Ford (F). Auto suppliers covered include Magna (MGA), Goodyear Tire (GT), Adient (ADNT), Delphi Technologies (DLPH), Visteon (VC), BorgWarner (BWA), Aptiv (APTV) and Tenneco (TEN).

General Motors price target raised to $70 from $60 at Citi
Citi analyst Itay Michaeli raised his price target for General Motors to $70 from $60 citing greater confidence in his long-term potential upside case of $134 per share. The carmaker closed Friday up 70c to $41.46. The analyst views his new price target as "arguably conservative." The $70 per share target does not contemplate the "potential game-changing implications" of GM's leadership in autonomous vehicles as a Network, or robotaxis, Michaeli tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes GM's exposure to pickup trucks and robotaxi networks are "overlooked/misunderstood narratives." He keeps a Buy rating on the shares.

Deutshe Bank sees buying opportunities in Autos & Auto Parts
Deutsche Bank analyst Rod Lache attributes the recent selloff in Auto Industry stocks a confluence of factors, including rising rates, rising commodities/tariffs, and rising NAFTA risks. These represent a "triple-threat that has led to a resurgence of cyclical concerns," Lache tells investors in a research note. The analyst, while admitting limited visibility into the "most significant of these," the outlook for NAFTA, believes that investor concerns are overdone. He's a buyer of General Motors (GM), American Axle (AXL), and Lear (LEA) on weakness.

Applied Optoelectronics price target lowered to $55 from $69 at DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Mark Kelleher lowered his price target on Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) to $55 following a miss on Q4 revenue and lower than expected Q1 guidance. The analyst attributes the miss to a sequential decline in gross margins due to reduced capacity utilization and price cuts, while also modeling a weaker 40GB/100GB demand in his price target going forward. Kelleher keeps his Buy rating on Applied Optoelectronics, thanks in part to an incremental positive of its recent supply agreement with Facebook (FB), with the revenue ramp from the contract expected in the second half of this year.

Market undervalues Applied Optoelectronics deal with Facebook, says DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Mark Kelleher writes that his recent meetings with the management of Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI) suggests that investors underappreciate the impact of its $125M deal with Facebook (FB). The analyst notes that the deal gives the company some added visibility for the second half of 2018 and is also a sign that Facebook acknowledges the possibility of a transceiver shortage by the end of the year. Kelleher keeps his Buy rating and $55 price target on Applied Optoelectronics.

However, despite Twitter's better than expected results, he still sees the stock being a relative underperformer from current levels when compared to faster growing peers like Facebook (FB) and Alphabet (GOOGL), he tells investors. Nowak keeps an Underweight rating on Twitter.

Jefferies boosts Amazon target to $1,850 after ad business deep dive
Following a deep dive into the company's advertising business, Jefferies analyst Brent Thill raised his price target for Amazon.com (AMZN) shares to $1,850 from $1,750. The stock closed yesterday up $19.50 to $1,589.39. Amazon's ad segment should grow annually at 43% to $22B by 2022, Thill tells investors in a research note. Amazon is aggressively growing its advertising business, but not at the expense of Facebook (FB) and Google (GOOG, GOOGL), the analyst contends. He says Amazon's "billions of touch points with consumers and end of funnel sales conversion are an advertiser's dream for targeting and attribution." Thill thinks the "right pieces are in place" for Amazon to get to $1 trillion in market capitalization over time. He keeps a Buy rating on Amazon shares.

Apple iPhone X EMS build forecasts lowered at JPMorgan
JPMorgan analysts said they recently found more evidence of sharply reduced iPhone X production as well as a shift in mix in favor of LCD models. They now believe Apple's iPhone X EMS build may be as low as 15M units in the first quarter, down from their previous expectation for 20M units, and only see about 10M built in Q2, compared to a prior view of 18M units. The team also further lowered its full-year iPhone EMS production forecast to 225M, which would be up only 2-3% year-over-year, compared to a prior expectation of up 9%.

Rosenblatt makes 'mild' cuts to iPhone X production estimates
Rosenblatt analyst Jun Zhang lowered his March and June quarter production estimates for the iPhone X by 2.5M and 3M units, respectively, as he believes the flagship Apple device did not sell well in China during the New Year holiday and amid consumer speculation regarding a cheaper, larger iPhone model later this year. However, he also expects a Red iPhone 8 model to offset the X cut in the June quarter. Zhang, who now estimates 50M total iPhone shipments in the March quarter and 38M iPhone shipments in the June quarter, keeps a Buy rating on Apple shares.

Piper survey indicates new iPhones will address key issues with X
Media outlets now suggest that an expanded lineup of next generation iPhones, including both larger screen and lower priced options, will come this year, Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson tells investors in a research note. The analyst surveyed 1,500 iPhone owners that did not upgrade to the iPhone X to gauge potential success of Apple's strategy of launching a wider array of next generation phones in the same year. The takeaway from the survey is that a larger screen and lower priced option would address the concerns of 40% of iPhone owners that have not upgraded, Olson writes. The survey indicated that 40% of owners have not upgraded to iPhone X because they either feel the device is too expensive or they prefer a larger screen. The analyst continues to recommend owning Apple on potential for a "super-long" iPhone cycle. He maintains an Overweight rating on the shares with a $200 price target.

Ford bull case view raised despite 'significant headwinds' at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas raised his 2017 EPS estimate for Ford to near the midpoint of the company's guidance following its Q3 report and slightly increased his price target on the stock to $10 from $9. While he keeps an Underweight rating on Ford, stating that the headwinds it faces are significant, he also sees the "scope for an equally significant response" and raised his bull case to $25 from $18 given a sum-of-the-parts analysis under which he values Ford's truck business, including the F-series and others, at nearly $20 per share, Ford Europe, S. Barclays likes American Axle, Fiat Chrysler in 'back-to-basics world'
After the Consumer Electronics Show focused on autonomous driving, Barclays analyst Brian Johnson expects the North American International Auto Show in Detroit "will get back to the here and now earnings drivers." The focus will be on trucks, tariffs, and taxes, Johnson tells investors in a research note on the U.S. Autos & Auto Parts sector. This includes a focus on key pickup truck launches, the potential for a North American Free Trade Agreement withdrawal to re-impose tariffs on autos and auto parts, and the impact of tax reform on earnings. In this "back-to-basics world," Johnson likes shares of American Axle (AXL) and Fiat Chrysler (FCAU). He sees Fiat as benefiting the most from tax reform and notes American Axle, his top pick, is the most levered to the U.S. large pickup market of any supplier he covers. The analyst says he's more confident in his Top Pick call and $25 price target on American Axle.

Opco sees limited number of competitors for Tesla's Model 3
Oppenheimer analyst Colin Rusch believes Tesla's (TSLA) Model 3 rollout is critical to its position in Advanced Driver Assist Systems. Tesla's ability to "accelerate learning cycles related to characterizing driving behavior" is facilitated by the high volume rollout of Model 3," Rusch tells investors in a research note. His channel checks indicate just fifteen models with semi-autonomous driving technology are currently available for model years 2016/2017. These cars are offered by BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Tesla. The analyst notes that a RAND Corporation study estimates over 11B test miles would be necessary in order to show statistically significant evidence of the autonomous vehicle's superiority over human drivers. With Model 3 enabling high mileage data collection, Tesla can accumulate the necessary mileage within just 27 months, or by mid-2021, Rusch writes. The analyst sees the potential for Tesla's ADAS value to be "significantly higher" than Mobileye's (MBLY) acquisition price if it can control the machine learning aspect of the product development. Rusch has a Perform rating on Tesla shares. The stock closed yesterday down $6.49 to $303.86.
