On The Fly: Top stock stories for Tuesday

U.S. stocks closed higher, rebounding from yesterday's losses as energy stocks saw gains due to an increase in oil prices, though technology stocks remained lower following Monday's selloff. Yesterday, stocks on Wall Street closed broadly and sharply lower as losses from markets overseas weighed on sentiment and Facebook (FB) dropped on reports that data of 50M users were misused. Meanwhile, investors are beginning to shift focus to an upcoming statement by the Federal Reserve, which is expected to announce a raise in its key interest rate on Wednesday. ECONOMIC EVENTS: The Redbook Index, which measures the growth in U.S. retail sales, was up 3.2% y/y in the latest week vs. the prior reading of 2.9% growth. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell will preside over his first official Federal Open Market Committee meeting. A sixth rate hike by the FOMC since it started to normalize rates in December 2015 is widely expected. Chairman Powell will present the consensus forecast for overall economic growth. COMPANY NEWS: Following a sharp Monday sell-off, Facebook has seen increased scrutiny from investors amid calls by European and U.S. lawmakers for investigations into reports that the social media company's user data was accessed by Cambridge Analytica to assist President Donald Trump in winning the 2016 election, according to Reuters. The U.K.'s information and data privacy regulator is probing whether Facebook responded "robustly," NBC News reported, citing Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham, while Bloomberg said Facebook is being investigated by the U.S. FTC. Facebook will hold an open meeting for all employees to let them ask questions about the data privacy scandal... Roku (ROKU) shares closed 2.6% higher after it announced that The Roku Channel, an AVOD app, is expected to be available this summer on select Samsung (SSNLF) smart TVs... Travel website Orbitz.com, a subsidiary of Expedia (EXPE), said it identified, and remediated, a data security incident in which personal user information was accessed. Expedia shares were 0.7% lower after the news... Meanwhile, Reuters reported that Toyota (TM) is temporarily halting its autonomous vehicle testing after a self-driving Uber test car hit and killed an Arizona pedestiran in the first known death involving a fully autonomous vehicle. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the noteworthy gainers was Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA), which surged 28.7% after it said that its ulcerative colitis drug met its primary, secondary, and clinical remission endpoints in a Phase 2 trial. Also higher was Stoneridge (SRI), which gained 16.2% after Stephens analyst Justin Long upgraded the stock to Overweight from Equal Weight. Among the notable losers was Group 1 Automotive (GPI), which slipped 10.4% after it said that its first quarter earnings will be negatively affected by weak market conditions. Also lower were Oracle (ORCL) and Duluth Holdings (DLTH), which fell a respective 9.4% and 10.8% after reporting quarterly results. In addition, Twitter (TWTR) was 10.4% lower after Bloomberg reported that Israel is weighing legal action against the company for online incitement. INDEXES: The Dow rose 116.36, or 0.47%, to 24,727.27, the Nasdaq gained 20.06, or 0.27%, to 7,364.30, and the S&P 500 advanced 4.02, or 0.15%, to 2,716.94.

Facebook pricing/ROI continuing higher, Twitter feedback constructive, says Cleveland Research
Citing a recent research into the digital advertising channel, Cleveland Research analyst Kevin Rottinghaus says that Facebook (FB) pricing continues to increase, justified by a continued improvement in ROI, and the social media platform appears to be opening more inventory on Instagram and Messenger. Meanwhile, the analyst says Twitter (TWTR) continues to improve in ad technology, advertiser/partner engagement, traffic and users, and the company is seeing some signs that ad dollars are coming back into the platform. Snap, on the other hand, is still seeing limited ad dollars to the platform as ROI and ad tech lag, with app redesign receiving cautious feedback, he contends. The analyst also pointed out that Amazon (AMZN) is viewed as taking incremental dollars otherwise likely to paid search and Google (GOOG; GOOGL), while remaining aggressive in expanding ad tech and sales channels.

Facebook is 'oversold' with 'limited' near term catalysts, says BofA/Merrill
BofA/Merrill analyst Justin Post is keeping his Buy rating and $265 price target on Facebook, writing that while the stock is oversold, the compounding news flow raising privacy concerns is adding to risk. Post says that sentiment could remain pressured with looming General Data Protection Regulation enforcement coming into force in late Q2, adding that the company could use some added visibility on any impact in terms of user engagement and financial conditions. Longer term, the analyst believes that the current valuation makes the stock "compelling".

Credit Suisse remains a buyer of Facebook
After media outlets reported data was harvested from Facebook through the use of an app where users were paid to take a personality test and agreed to have their data collected for "academic use," Credit Suisse analyst Stephen Ju notes that Facebook has already outlined its plans during Q3 earnings call to double headcount addressing user security, so he does not anticipate material change to OpEx guidance. The analyst believes the stock will be subject to further headline risk in the coming weeks as senior management is summoned to DC for hearings with lawmakers, but he remains a buyer. Ju reiterates an Outperform rating and $240 price target on the shares.

Facebook risk/reward 'compelling' despite headwinds, says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Brent Thill said that while headlines will likely keep Facebook's stock range bound and weigh on investor sentiment into the second half of the year, the headwinds will not effect the top line. Thill sees about $15 of downside against $65 of upside, and hence sees the risk/reward as compelling at these levels. The analyst maintained a Buy rating and $230 price target on Facebook shares.

Needham says buy Roku amid 18% selloff given discount to Netflix
Needham analyst Laura Martin recommends using the post-earnings selloff in shares of Roku (ROKU) as a buying opportunity. The stock in premarket trading is down 18%, or $9.40, to $41.90. Martin keeps a Buy rating on the shares with a $50 price target. The stock will open lower based on a non-cash accounting change to Accounting Standards Codification 606 that lowers Roku's projected gross profit, adjusted EBITDA and earnings, Martin tells investors in a research note. The analyst, however, expects ASC 606 to elevate Roku's reported revenue and costs, which she feels is helpful, noting the stock likely trades on a multiple of forward revenue. At 7.0 times, Roku trades at a "sharp discount" to its closest comp, Netflix (NFLX), which trades at 10.7 times, Martin contends. She thinks investors should own Roku given the "steep discount" to Netflix despite "comparable growth credentials, a better margin profile, lower content risks, and little competitive threat from new OTT channel launches."

Roku no longer looks like 'compelling short,' Opco says in upgrade
Oppenheimer analyst Jason Helfstein upgraded Roku to Perform from Underperform saying the stock "no longer appears to be a compelling short." Shares have declined to $34 from a peak of $57, Helfstein tells investors in a research note. He sees Roku's risk/reward as "neutral to favorable," noting the company's 2018 guidance now reflects the negative impact of new accounting standard ASC 606. The Roku Channel being pulled forward to 2018, marketing dollars associated with the acceleration of skinny bundle adoption and potential automatic content recognition monetization represent potential positive catalysts, Helfstein writes. He does not have a price target on the shares. Roku in premarket trading is up 5%, or $1.60, to $35.45.

KeyBanc views call with Samsung as positive for Micron
KeyBanc analyst Weston Twigg spoke to Samsung (SSNLF) last night and gained more clarity on the company's DRAM expansion plans for 2018. Samsung, which represents 35%-40% of DRAM production, indicated that it may grow its net DRAM wafer starts per month by around 10% for the year, and that it would likely exit 2018 at a slightly higher rate than that, Twigg tells investors in a research note. He believes, however, that bit growth won't likely exceed market demand and should be moderate. As such, the analyst expects a "prolonged healthy DRAM pricing environment," which he views as positive for Micron Technology (MU). Immersion price target raised to $17 from $15 at Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Anthony Stoss says Immersion's (IMMR) guidance for 2018 is better than expected on the heels of the settlement Apple (AAPL) settlement. In a research note to clients, Stoss, who raised his price target to $17 from $15 and has a Buy rating on shares, said the implied Apple settlement appears to be towards the high end or above his previous $25M-$30M expectation. Due to ASC606 accounting, a portion of the Apple settlement will be taken in Q1 with the rest ratable over the life of the contract. He also noted that litigation spend guidance was a vast improvement vs. actual spend in 2017. He looks for additional pending lawsuit settlements with Samsung (SSNLF), Fitbit (FIT) and Motorola (MSI) in the coming months and years, penetration into new markets like China and growing adoption in automotive to drive the stock.

The analyst said to "expect an ugly Q1 print," with EBITDA being the lowest since 2011 and does not expect additional spending going forward to generate the desired benefits. Morgan Stanley compares automakers to Facebook, Apple in 'Auto 2.0' model
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas noted that auto companies' valuations have compressed to extremely low levels, but he believes that a move from a vehicle ownership model to a transportation subscriber model could expand the revenue opportunities for the potential "tollkeepers" for the monetization of content and data by "nearly an order of magnitude." Looking at U.S. technology leaders Facebook (FB) and Apple (AAPL), which are both valued on their installed base/subscriber models, can "offer valuable clues" regarding the opportunity for General Motors (GM) and other auto OEMs, said Jonas. Viewing the OEMs though the lens of a subscription model, which should be less cyclical and potentially less capital intensive over time than the current auto model, is relevant to analyzing auto stocks, according to Jonas, who adds that it is still too early to call a winner or loser in "Auto 2.0." Other publicly traded legacy automakers include Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), Ford (F), Honda (HMC), Nissan (NSANY), Toyota (TM), Volkswagen (VLKAY) and Daimler (DDAIF).

Morgan Stanley raises U.S. auto sales forecasts through 2021
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas raised his U.S. seasonally adjusted annual rate, or SAAR, forecast for automakers by an average of 850,000 units from 2018 through 2021, which represents slightly more than a 5% increase from his prior forecast. However, his average U.S. SAAR forecast is still well below last year's 17.3M units and 8% under the cyclical high of 17.6M units in 2016. Jonas points to U.S. tax reform and "relatively stable" recent trends in auto sales and credit as reasons for the hike, noting that while infrastructure action from the federal government could be a material positive, it is not explicitly in his new forecast. Adding that the higher view has a net positive impact on estimates and price targets for exposed auto Original Equipment Manufacturers, or OEMs, and suppliers, Jonas raised his price targets on General Motors (GM), Asbury Automotive (ABG), AutoNation (AN), Group 1 Automotive (GPI), Lithia Motors (LAD), Penske Automotive (PAH), Sonic Automotive (SAH) and Ford (F). The analyst also says the unseasonably warm fall weather and California wildfires may impact Q3 results, with risk that the management's Q4 outlook may turn more cautious.

Duluth Holdings to benefit from store growth visibility, says DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Andrew Burns preview's Thursday's Q3 earnings for Duluth Holdings, saying he is positive on the company's omni-channel positioning, high visibility to store growth, and potential earnings acceleration. While the overall retail environment remains difficult, the analyst writes in his research report, the company has had a better assortment of seasonal products while also lapping the warmer temperatures going into the winter last year. Burns keeps his Buy rating and $25 price target on Duluth.

DOWNGRADE

On The Fly: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Ultragenyx (RARE) downgraded to Hold from Buy at SunTrust, with analyst Edward Nash slashing his price target to $55 from $105 after the company reported negative topline data from the Phase III trial for Ace-ER for GNE myopathy. Nash is disappointed by this first major clinical setback for the company and removed Ace-ER from his valuation models. 2. Duluth Holdings (DLTH) downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at Raymond James, with analyst Dan Wewer citing increasing industry challenges. Wewer is concerned about increasing promotional activity and aggressive pricing tactics by competitors. 3. Cree (CREE) downgraded to Underweight from Equal Weight at Stephens. 4. Washington Prime (WPG) downgraded to Underperform from Neutral at Boenning & Scattergood by analyst Floris van Dijkum due to a more expensive NAV relative valuation caused by the more than 6% sector outperformance in the current quarter. 5. Baozun (BZUN) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Deutsche Bank by analyst Eileen Deng citing valuation after the stock's 18% rise in the past six months. Twitter price target raised to $28 from $22 at BMO Capital
BMO Capital analyst Daniel Salmon raised his price target on Twitter (TWTR) to $28 after Q1 results, saying the company has a "clearer strategy" to sustain its revenue momentum thanks to video and AI helping grow mainstream adoption. As top-line pressures fade, writes the analyst in his research note titled "Solid Steps Down Road to Recovery", the stock could become "more interesting", though he is also weary of Facebook (FB) competition still "looming large". Salmon keeps a Market Perform rating on Twitter.

UPGRADE

On The Fly: Top five analyst upgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Twitter (TWTR) upgraded to Sector Perform from Underperform at RBC Capital with analyst Mark Mahaney saying the fourth quarter revenue and EBITDA were materially better than expected, and while MAU's were below consensus, DAU's grew for the first time at a double-digit rate. 2. iRobot (IRBT) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Raymond James with analyst Mark Strouse saying he sees a more balanced risk/reward following the recent pullback in the shares. 3. Regeneron (REGN) upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Baird with analyst Brian Skorney noting its selloff since last year and believes its valuation has reached a point where the selloff is overdone. 4. Teva (TEVA) upgraded to Sector Perform from Underperform at RBC Capital with analyst Randall Stanicky saying the 11% sell-off in the stock price following the company's guidance update has removed the debate around 2018 EBITDA target and sees limited downside from the current levels. 5. United Technologies (UTX) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Argus with analyst John Eade saying the company remains a leader in a number of global industries and should continue to benefit from population growth and middle class expansion in developing markets. Underweight
Twitter price target raised to $28 from $15 at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak said he underestimated Twitter's (TWTR) turnaround efforts throughout 2017 and he has raised his price target on the stock to $28 from $15 given the company's better revenue outlook and high incremental margins. However, despite Twitter's better than expected results, he still sees the stock being a relative underperformer from current levels when compared to faster growing peers like Facebook (FB) and Alphabet (GOOGL), he tells investors. Nowak keeps an Underweight rating on Twitter.
