Box Office Battle: 'Pacific Rim: Uprising' beats 'Black Panther'
Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK) subsidiary Universal's "Pacific Rim: Uprising," the sequel to 2013 science fiction action film "Pacific Rim," debuted at number one, with $28M from 2,850 theaters. The film scored 47% from Rotten Tomatoes and got a B CinemaScore from movie audiences. BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Disney (DIS) and Marvel Studios' "Black Panther" fell to second place in its sixth weekend, banking another $16.7M for a domestic total of $630.9M and becoming the top-grossing superhero film of all time in North America and the number 5 title of all time, adjusted for inflation. Behind it was Roadside Attractions and Lionsgate's (LGF.A) "I Can Only Imagine," which fell 19% to an estimated $14M for a 10-day domestic total of $38.5M. Viacom (VIA, VIAB) subsidiary Paramount's animated "Sherlock Gnomes" debuted at number four, with just $10.6M from 3,663 theaters. Rounding out the top five, Warner Bros.' (TWX) "Tomb Raider" earned an estimated $10.4M for a 10-day North America total of $41.7M. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include 21st Century Fox's (FOXA), and Sony's (SNE).
