Gartner says global IT spending to grow 6.2% in 2018 to $3.7T

Worldwide IT spending is projected to total $3.7% in 2018, an increase of 6.2% from 2017, according to the latest forecast by Gartner, Inc. "Although global IT spending is forecast to grow 6.2% this year, the declining U.S. dollar has caused currency tailwinds, which are the main reason for this strong growth," said John-David Lovelock, research VP at Gartner. "This is the highest annual growth rate that Gartner has forecast since 2007 and would be a sign of a new cycle of IT growth. However, spending on IT around the world is growing at expected levels and is in line with expected global economic growth. Through 2018 and 2019, the U.S. dollar is expected to trend stronger while enduring tremendous volatility due to the uncertain political environment, the North American Free Trade Agreement renegotiation and the potential for trade wars." Worldwide spending for devices -- PCs, tablets and mobile phones -- is forecast to grow in 2018, reaching $706B, an increase of 6.6% from 2017. "The device market continues to see dual dynamics. Some users are holding back from buying, and those that are buying are doing so, on average, at higher price points," said Lovelock. "As a result, end-user spending will increase faster than units through 2022. However, total end-user spending and unit shipments are expected to be lower compared with previous forecasts, as demand for ultramobile premium devices, ultramobile utility devices and basic phones is expected to be slow."

Gartner price target lowered to $105 from $114 at Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Peter Appert lowered his price target for Gartner shares to $105 after reviewing the bull/bear case. The analyst likes the secular growth story around the core Gartner business, but is "less convinced" about the long-term growth opportunity created by the acquisition of CEB. Appert keeps a Neutral rating on the name.

Gartner price target raised to $155 from $143 at RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Gary Bisbee raised his price target on Gartner to $98, forecasting a 10% reduction in effective tax rate that will boost 2018 EPS by about 13%. The analyst says that the company's core business is strengthening, while its acquisition of CEB offers "significant potential" for the unit's growth. Moreover, the analyst notes that the company is attractively valued at a 10% discount to historic valuation. Bisbee keeps his Top Pick rating on Gartner.

BofA/Merrill cuts Facebook target to $210 on increased regulatory risk
Bank of America Merrill Lynch analyst Justin Post cut his price target for shares of Facebook (FB) to $210 from $230 citing increased regulatory risk. The analyst, however, reiterates a Buy rating on the shares with his target representing substantial upside from current levels. Facebook closed yesterday up 67c to $160.06. The Federal Trade Commission investigation is significant as it raises risk of civil penalties on data privacy violations, Post tells investors in a research note. And if history serves, the investigation could take multiple years to resolve, the analyst adds. He points out that the FTC/Department of Justice investigation into Microsoft (MSFT) took over a decade. In the meantime, Post sees user and usage erosion, with "negative news flow likely to continue into Q2," as the biggest near-term and long-term risk for Facebook.

Automation the next 'cloud wars' battle, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Brent Bracelin says the AWS Summit SF exposed an even greater focus by Amazon (AMZN) Web Services on cloud automation. The analyst believes the "cloud wars" in 2018 appear to be moving from a battle of "features" seen in the last two years toward a new battle of "automation." Bracelin sees Automation as having three major benefits for AWS: it can drive material cost savings, it saves developers time, and it serves as a competitive differentiator versus Microsoft Azure (MSFT) and Google Cloud (GOOG; GOOGL). Bracelin reiterates a Sector Weight rating on Amazon's shares.

Morgan Stanley says CIO survey good for Microsoft, Amazon, negative for Juniper
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty detailed the results of the firm's April survey of 100 U.S. and European Chief information officers, noting that it showed the most bullish growth expectation in 10 years. CIOs surveyed see rising 2018 IT budget growth expectations, increasing their cumulative growth view to 5.4% in the most recent survey from a 4.9% growth outlook in January, Huberty noted. Cloud and Security are top priorities, and the strong public cloud adoption trends favor Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT), according to the analyst. Meanwhile, Huberty noted that Cisco (CSCO) saw a slight tick down in purchase intentions, Juniper Networks (JNPR) continues to sees negative spend, and F5 Networks (FFIV) saw weakening purchase intentions.

Microsoft restructuring keeps reporting units unchanged, says Jefferies
Microsoft announced a reorganization of its engineering teams that clearly demonstrates the company's commitment to artificial intelligence, Jefferies analyst John DiFucci tells investors in a research note. The analyst points out that none of the company's financial reporting units will change under the restructuring. Microsoft will continue to release all its current key performance indicators - "for now," DiFucci writes. The analyst adds that while the changes and concurrent departure of Terry Myerson "could on the surface" appear to be deemphasizing the Windows business, he currently estimates that about a third of the company's profit still pertains to Windows. DiFucci keeps an Underperform rating on Microsoft with a $62 price target.

Citi sees $100B opportunity in Apple's capital returns strategy
Citi analyst Jim Suva reiterates a Buy rating on Apple shares with a $200 price target. The analyst expects "volatility ahead" for the stock as consensus estimates for the March and June quarters move lower to reflect more tempered demand for the iPhone X. Looking ahead, however, Suva expects investor focus to be on the impact from Apple's capital returns strategy. He estimates this could be a $100B increase. Investors will also soon focus on Apple's second half of 2018 product lineup and continued strength in its Services segment, Suva tells investors in a research note.

Narrowing gap between TSMC, Intel makes Apple's aspiration possible, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Mark Li believes that given Apple's (AAPL) experience in processor design, replacing Intel (INTC) processor with its own is possible. Further, the analyst says that the narrowing gap in process technology between TSMC (TSM) and Intel also makes Apple's aspiration possible, while Apple's vertical integration with OS and applications also puts it in a better position to challenge Intel. Li sees a downside to TSMC's 2019 revenue because of Bitcoin, but says it remains a "solid" company with balanced risk and reward. The analyst reiterates a Market-Perform rating on TSMC shares.

Intel has limited risk from 'recurring' Apple concerns, says Morgan Stanley
After Bloomberg reported yesterday that Apple (AAPL) is evaluating using its own processors in Mac computers, Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore noted that this has been a recurring concern in recent years for Intel (INTC). Ensuring backwards compatibility with prior Macs would require emulation, which could be problematic for Apple given that ARM processors have lower performance for most common PC applications, said Moore. The analyst, who doesn't see Intel's roughly 4% exposure to Macs being fully at risk, maintains his Equal Weight rating on Intel shares.

Apple supply chain checks suggest tighter capital control, says RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Amit Daryanani kept his Outperform rating and $203 price target on Apple after conducting the company's Asian supply channel check. The analyst maintains his expectations of three iPhones to be launched this year - one LCD model and two LED models - while also noting tighter cost controls by the company since it ramped up the output of iPhone 8. Daryanani further expects the LCD model to feature a 6.1-inch full screen and 3D sensing, accounting for over 50% of of the new iPhone production by the second half. The analyst notes that while suppliers expect the production of 80M-90M iPhone units in the second half of 2018 - below 100M-120M iPhone 8/X forecasts made last year - the forecast has more to do with inventory management rather than demand. Daryanani maintains his positive outlook on Apple stock thanks to the tailwinds around the company's "capital allocation, services growth, gross-margin upside and attractive valuation".

Adobe downgraded to Market Perform after run-up at JMP Securities
As previously reported, JMP Securities analyst Patrick Walravens downgraded Adobe Systems (ADBE) to Market Perform from Outperform as he believes the shares are fairly valued after having risen 69% in 2017 and a further 21% year-to-date. On the plus side, he notes that Adobe's Creative Cloud continues with "near-monopoly competitive power", its international business is growing and its CEO said on the Q1 earnings call that he expects the "momentum to continue." However, Walravens also expresses caution that the strategic partnership between Google (GOOGL) and Salesforce (CRM) could negatively impact the competitive position for Adobe's Experience Cloud.

Microsoft has path to $1T market cap, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Keith Weiss said Microsoft's (MSFT) Public Cloud offering is differentiated from those of cloud giants Amazon (AMZN) and Google (GOOGL) as it spans from core Infrastructure Services to Platform-as-a-Service capabilities and up the stack to the application layer. This combination of Public Cloud assets paired with Microsoft's large existing customer base, developer base, expansive distribution channel, and strong on-premise technology will likely drive continuing share gains over the next three years, contends Weiss. The analyst, who thinks Microsoft looks poised to maintain a dominant position in a public cloud market, also now forecasts improving gross and operating margins for the company over the next three years. Given all of this, Weiss called Microsoft his top pick, increased his price target on the shares to $130 from $110, and noted that he sees the company having a path to $50B in EBIT and a $1 trillion market cap.

Facebook, Twitter MAUs could drop on European regulation, says Barclays
Barclays analyst Ross Sandler says his recent checks indicate Europe's General Data Protection Regulation could be "slightly more problematic than Facebook (FB) implied in recent commentary." The analyst sees risk that reported monthly active users could drop off for Facebook and Twitter (TWTR) starting in late Q2. He adds, however, that daily active users are "far more important and less of a GDPR concern for the social networks." Daily users may also drop off a bit, Sandler adds. The analyst sees less of impact on ad revenue. Further, his checks suggest that most companies using cookies and tags for digital marketing should be relatively unchanged as most publishers have been using GDPR compliant notifications for months ahead of the May mandate. Beyond GDPR, Sandler thinks ePrivacy regulation, slated for 2020 and beyond, may be even more problematic for the social media group, and "accrue more control" to Google (GOOG, GOOGL) and Apple (AAPL).

Amazon digital ad spending to benefit from Facebook scandal, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba says the recent issues involving Facebook (FB) and Google's (GOOGL) YouTube in customer data protection are positive for Amazon.com (AMZN). The analyst says he "always expected" for Amazon to become a force in digital advertising based on its "extensive user data, technological expertise, and deep pockets", pointing to data management scandal at those firms as a potential catalyst for migration to Amazon. Etsy price target raised to $33 from $28 at DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Tom Forte raised his price target on Etsy (ETSY) to $33, keeping his positive view of the company's business model as a blend of "eBay's (EBAY) high-margin marketplace, Google's (GOOGL) high-margin advertising business, PayPal's (PYPL) payments effort, and, loosely speaking, Amazon's (AMZN) shipping offering". Forte adds that his meetings with the management last week was even more impressive as it demonstrated how the company's operations are being fine-tuned. The analyst keeps his Buy rating on Etsy.
