Rent-A-Center upgraded to Hold after reports of takeover bids at Loop Capital

As previously reported, Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba upgraded Rent-A-Center to Hold from Sell following "widespread media reports" that the company has received multiple takeover bids, including one from turnaround specialist Cerberus. The analyst, who also cited the company's report of its first core U.S. same store sales growth since 2015 in his upgrade, said he continues to have doubts about whether Rent-A-Center will ultimately be sold at a significant premium to its current stock price. Chukumba raised his price target on Rent-A-Center shares to $9 from $6.

Loop Capital less optimistic on Rent-A-Center ahead of earnings
Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba keeps his Sell rating and $8 price target on Rent-a-Center ahead of Q4 earnings, but says he is turning even less optimistic about the company's top-line growth and profitability expectations. The analyst notes that investors will focus on comps and profitability, any 2018 guidance, a potential update on the company's progress in strategic alternatives review, and the turnaround plan of the recently appointed CEO.

Stephens more cautious on Rent-A-Center after update on strategic process
Stephens analyst Vincent Caintic said he is incrementally more negative n Rent-A-Center after the company said its board expects to reach a determination with respect to "whether" to pursue a sale of the company, as he thought selling the company was the main activist thesis. A decision not to sell would drive "material downside" for Rent-A-Center shares, Caintic believes. The company comments on January and February same-store sale were also negative, noted the analyst, who maintains his Underweight rating and $5 price target on Rent-A-Center shares.
