IDC reports worldwide traditional PC shipments flat year-over-year in Q1

Worldwide shipments of traditional PCs totaled 60.4M units and recorded flat year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2018, International Data Corporation reported last night. "The results exceeded the earlier forecast of a 1.5% decline and marks the third consecutive quarter where traditional PC shipment volume has hovered around flat growth year on year. Although the numbers are preliminary, the data seems to indicate a continued build up in commercial renewal activity as the main driver for the stabilizing trend," IDC stated. Business uptake of Microsoft's (MSFT) Windows 10 systems appear to be steadily ongoing, benefiting commercially-focused PC OEMs such as HP Inc. (HPQ), Dell, and Lenovo (LNVGY), IDC noted. HP maintained a comfortable lead over all others in the market with its eighth consecutive quarter of overall growth, up 4.3% year on year, and growth in all regions except Latin America. Lenovo saw a flat quarter in 1Q18, the third consecutive quarter in which the company saw year-on-year volume stabilize with flat global growth and a slower pace of decline in the U.S. Dell posted the strongest year-on-year growth out of all the major companies, growing 6.4% and buoyed by strong performances in nearly every region. Acer held onto the fourth position. Apple (AAPL) finished the quarter in the fifth position with a year-on-year decline in shipments of 4.8%. Intel (INTC) is also levered to the traditional PC market.

Barclays lowers Apple estimates, price target after visiting Asia suppliers
"The lone trouble spot is smartphones, while most other segments appear to be in good shape," Barclays analyst Mark Moskowitz tells investors in a research note after visiting a group of Asia supply chain companies. For the smartphone market, suppliers expect limited to no unit growth in 2018, the analyst adds. For Apple (AAPL), iPhones X and 8 demand trends are "soft," with "no signs of any deferred mega cycle in making," Moskowitz contends. To reflect weaker iPhone units and average selling price, the analyst lowered his 2018 and 2019 earnings per estimates for Apple by 4.4% and 3.0% to $11.72 and $12.44, respectively. Moskowitz also trimmed his price target for Apple shares to $168 from $170 and keeps an Equal Weight rating on the name. Meanwhile, PCs are benefitting from enterprise demand for notebooks, which could be good for HP Inc. (HPQ) and hard-disk-drive stocks Seagate STX) and Western Digital (WDC), Moskowitz writes.

On The Fly: Top five analyst upgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. UPS (UPS) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Loop Capital by analyst Rick Paterson, who attributed the recent selloff, in part, to news on February 9 that Amazon (AMZN) plans to offer some limited parcel delivery services to third parties. The analyst believes concerns around Amazon "may be a little overblown." Paterson believes Amazon represents about 4%-6% of "lower margin" revenues at UPS. If all of that is ultimately brought into Amazon's own network, "that's hardly a disaster," he contended. 2. Schlumberger (SLB) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at BofA/Merrill by analyst Timna Tanners, who said shares underperformed and fund ownership fell in 2017 as investor focus shifted towards more shale-focused names. Tanners believes the oil/gas price recovery cycle will shift focus to International with activity slowing recovering and pricing firming more in 2019. Further, the analyst believes SPM's contribution is underappreciated and expects a project payoff and/or stake sale in 2019. 3. HP Inc (HPQ) upgraded to Overweight from Neutral at JPMorgan by analyst Paul Coster, who cited valuation following the company's Q1 results. The analyst believes the shares may now look attractive for value investors and sees U.S. tax reform and foreign currency moves as tailwinds. 4. Finish Line (FINL) upgraded to Positive from Neutral at Susquehanna by analyst Sam Poser, who said channel checks indicate that sales and promotional trends in Q4 were not as bad as its guidance anticipated. He believes management has better positioned the company's marketing and promotional calendar as an adjustment to the late tax refund checks. 5. Duke Energy (DUK) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Deutsche Bank (DB) by analyst Jonathan Arnold, who said Friday's constructive order from the North Carolina Utilities Commission in the Duke Energy Progress rate case effectively allows recovery of a majority of the utility's historical costs related to coal ash basin closures. He sees the order as largely resolving the outstanding regulatory risk associated with coal ash cost recovery in North Carolina and likely offering a positive read-across to the larger Duke Energy Carolinas rate case. HP Inc. is growing, and this is 'not a typo,' says Citi
Citi analyst Jim Suva points out that Q1 marked the fourth consecutive quarter that HP Inc. saw both PC and Printing sales growth year-over-year. In a research note partially titled "Not A Typo: HP is Growing," Suva keeps a Buy rating on HP shares with a $27 price target. The company showed it continues to outgrow the market with a "strong brand and continued PC innovation," Suva contends. He adds that PC end markets are seeing the best demand in five years.

PC shipment data supportive of bullish thesis on Microsoft, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Michael Nemeroff notes that both IDC and Gartner (IT) reported preliminary PC shipment data that called out strength in the commercial market. The analyst points out that IDC highlighted that PC shipments outperformed in Q1, while Gartner noted that Q1 commercial PC shipments were strong, largely driven by Windows 10 migrations that were previously postponed during 2017. Nemeroff believes these data are supportive of his bullish thesis on Microsoft (MSFT) shares, as there is a high correlation to enterprises upgrading their productivity suite platform when upgrading their OS environments, or replacing PCs. The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating and $115 price target on Microsoft shares.

Microsoft can return to mid-teens EPS, FCF growth, says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst Phil Winslow believes Microsoft can return to mid-teens EPS and free cash flow growth as the headwinds from a declining PC market in recent years and the transition to the cloud continue abate relative to the increase in recurring subscription revenue from Azure and Office 365 and as the company continues to prudently control costs. The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating on the shares.

Morgan Stanley says CIO survey good for Microsoft, Amazon, negative for Juniper
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty detailed the results of the firm's April survey of 100 U.S. and European Chief information officers, noting that it showed the most bullish growth expectation in 10 years. CIOs surveyed see rising 2018 IT budget growth expectations, increasing their cumulative growth view to 5.4% in the most recent survey from a 4.9% growth outlook in January, Huberty noted. Cloud and Security are top priorities, and the strong public cloud adoption trends favor Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT), according to the analyst. Meanwhile, Huberty noted that Cisco (CSCO) saw a slight tick down in purchase intentions, Juniper Networks (JNPR) continues to sees negative spend, and F5 Networks (FFIV) saw weakening purchase intentions.

Automation the next 'cloud wars' battle, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Brent Bracelin says the AWS Summit SF exposed an even greater focus by Amazon (AMZN) Web Services on cloud automation. The analyst believes the "cloud wars" in 2018 appear to be moving from a battle of "features" seen in the last two years toward a new battle of "automation." Bracelin sees Automation as having three major benefits for AWS: it can drive material cost savings, it saves developers time, and it serves as a competitive differentiator versus Microsoft Azure (MSFT) and Google Cloud (GOOG; GOOGL). Bracelin reiterates a Sector Weight rating on Amazon's shares.

Citi positive on Intel following March notebook shipment data
Citi analyst Christopher Danely says March notebook shipments increased 40% month-over-month, above normal seasonality of up 34% month-over-month. Further, Q1 overall notebook shipments declined 18% quarter-over-quarter, above Citi's estimate of down 20%, Danely tells investors in a research note. He believes these positive PC datapoints are good for both Intel and the semiconductor sector. The PC end market represents roughly 66% of Intel profits and 33% of overall semiconductor sector sales, Danely contends. The analyst says the positive data points build more confidence in his Q1 earnings per share estimate for Intel of 78c, which is 10% above consensus. He keeps a Buy rating on Intel.

Tigress upgrades Intel to Buy, sees 'significant' share upside
Tigress Financial analyst Ivan Feinseth upgraded Intel to Buy from Neutral without a price target. The stock in afternoon trading is up 35c to $50.34. Intel is benefiting from increasing demand for processors used in data centers, cloud computing, enterprise storage and Internet of Things connectivity, Feinseth tells investors in an intraday research note. He believes the company's potential loss as a chip supplier for Apple's (AAPL) Mac in 2020 will not be material as gains in its Data Center Group will more than offset it. The analyst also sees Intel's Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group as an additional catalyst for growth. Feinseth believes "significant upside exists" from current share levels.

Apple mindshare grows in Piper's semi-annual teen survey
Piper Jaffray's semi-annual survey of over 6,000 U.S. teens showed that Apple's mindshare among teens grew again, analyst Michael Olson tells investors in a research note. Of the respondents, 82% have an iPhone, the highest percentage ever seen and up from 78% in the Fall 2017 survey, Olson writes. Further, he believes the iPhone may have room to move higher as 84% of teens anticipated their next phone to be an iPhone. He notes that Google's (GOOG, GOOGL) Andriod was the runner up with 11%, down from the Fall survey, and that the Apple Watch was the top smartwatch among teens, garnering 15%. Olson views the survey data as a sign that Apple's "place as the dominant device brand among teens remains intact." He keeps an Overweight rating on the shares with a $200 price target.

Beck's Key First Look card data analysis also indicated about 67% of Venmo users do not have a PayPal account, and only 3% of users would prefer to checkout on eBay (EBAY) with Apple Pay (AAPL), indicating minimal impact from eBay incorporating new payment options in the future. The analyst reiterates an Overweight rating and $90 price target on PayPal shares.
