Week in review: How Trump's policies moved stocks

Catch up on the top industries and stocks that were impacted, or were predicted to be impacted, by the comments, actions and policies of President Trump and his administration with this weekly recap compiled by The Fly: 1. ZTE BAN: The U.S. Department of Commerce has banned U.S. companies from selling components to Chinese telecom equipment maker ZTE Corp. (ZTCOY) for seven years for violating the terms of a sanctions violation case. ZTE previously pleaded guilty of illegally shipping U.S. goods and technology to Iran. Several analysts noted that the news is bad for Acacia Communications (ACIA) and Oclaro (OCLR), which each sell to ZTE. MKM Partners analyst Michael Genovese noted that Huawei and Nokia (NOK) will gain share at ZTE's expense. He thinks the news is positive for NeoPhotonics (NPTN), which has 40% exposure to Huawei and much smaller ZTE exposure. Additionally, the analyst sees the news as neutral to positive for Lumentum (LITE), Oclaro (OCLR) and Finisar (FNSR), which have significantly more Huawei and Nokia exposure than ZTE exposure. 2. AMAZON: On Thursday, Jeff Wilke, head of Amazon's okworldwide consumer division, downplayed concerns over criticism by President Donald Trump and said he is focused largely on advancing the company's artificial intelligence and machine learning tools to improve its Echo products, Amazon Go cashierless stores and warehouse automation, according to Bloomberg. "We've been around through four presidents and leadership changes all over the world. For more than two decades, we've worked with the post office to invent and deliver for customers and business all over the U.S. profitably, creating a bunch of jobs in the process. It's been a terrific partnership, and I hope it will remain so," Wilke said. 3. CHINESE RULES ON CLOUD: The U.S. government is reviewing ways to retaliate against China's restrictions on U.S. providers of cloud computing and other high-tech services, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week. The U.S. Trade Representative's office is in the process of building a fresh trade complaint contending that Beijing unfairly restricts U.S. trade in such high-tech services, the report added, citing individuals familiar with the matter. China requires U.S. cloud-computing firms, such as Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT), to form joint operations with Chinese companies and license their technology to the Chinese partners. 4. DOD CLOUD PLAN: Oracle co-CEO Safra Catz told President Donald Trump that the U.S. Defense Department's cloud-computing contract makes "no sense" as the Pentagon's plan is to find only one provider, Bloomberg reported on Monday. Catz said the procurement process by the Pentagon, which plans to award a single contract for multi-year cloud services that could go to one team made up of multiple companies, seems to favor Amazon's AWS, but added Trump told her that "he was very confident that the Pentagon would have a fair review." "Week in Review" is The Fly's weekly recap of its recurring series of "Trump Effect" exclusive stories.

Amazon gaining apparel market share in U.S., says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak said his analysis shows that Amazon (AMZN) gained 1.5% of U.S. apparel market share in 2017, largely at the expense of department stores. He estimates Amazon is the second largest U.S. apparel retailer, trailing only Walmart (WMT), and expects the e-commerce giant to take the number one spot in terms of U.S. apparel market share in 2018. Cumulatively, Nowak estimates Sears (SHLD), Macy's (M) and J.C. Penney (JCP) lost 0.8% share in 2017, with shareholdings remaining roughly flat for Target (TGT) and Kohl's (KSS). He maintains an Overweight rating and $1,550 price target on Amazon shares.

Citi boosts eBay target to $58, raises to second top pick in Internet
eBay (EBAY) shares do not reflect the value of the recently announced new payment solution, Citi analyst Mark May tells investors in a research note. He estimates the solution will increase earnings by 20% in its first full-year and has a net present value of $8 per share. May raised his price target for eBay to $58 and $50 and elevated the stock four spots to become his second to pick in Internet, behind only Amazon.com (AMZN). He views eBay's valuation as attractive and keeps a Buy rating on the shares.

Amazon online retail segment could miss Q1 estimates, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says his firm's Amazon Search Index indicates Q1 online unit growth will be 21% year-over-year versus 23% in Q4, suggesting revenue that is slightly below Street expectations for the online retail segment. However, given the "strong cloud backdrop" and Piper's chief investment officer survey indicating an intent to accelerate spend, Amazon Web Services could partially offset any softness in retail, Olson tells investors in a pre-earnings research note. He also sees a high likelihood of "other" segment revenue upside in Q1 from advertising. Investors should own Amazon shares for the "plethora of topline tailwinds" and the potential for a return to margin expansion in the second half of 2018, Olson contends. He reiterates an Overweight rating on the shares with a $1,650 price target.

Credit Suisse sees 'steady,' 'iterative' 2018 for Amazon
Credit Suisse analyst Stephen Ju raised his price target on Amazon to $1800 from $1750 ahead of its Q1 earnings release on April 26. Ju, who has an Outperform rating on shares, told investors in a research note that Amazon is "one of the best positioned to capture the next wave of retail dollars" coming offline given its iteration track record and product innovation. Ju also said Prime Wardrobe and the connection between Whole Foods content and Prime Now distribution will serve as "spearheads" to address opportunities in apparel and groceries, which he called "large pools of dollars still left to come online."

Acacia Communications price target lowered to $25 from $40 at MKM Partners
MKM Partners analyst Michael Genovese lowered his price target on Acacia Communications (ACIA) to $25, saying the U.S. Commerce Department ban on component supplies to China's ZTE (ZTCOY) is a "big loss" for the company. Genovese notes that ZTE represented about 30% of Acacia's sales in 2015-2017 and was about 16% of sales in the most recent quarter. The analyst keeps his Neutral rating on Acacia Communications, expecting it to focus "much more intently" on its Hyper Scale DCI opportunities, while also lowering his Q2 EPS view to 7c from 14c.

On The Fly: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. PepsiCo (PEP) downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Goldman Sachs with analyst Judy Hong saying the potential for continued softer North American Beverage volumes could weigh on the company's organic sales growth. 2. Bristol-Myers (BMY) downgraded to Equal Weight from Overweight at Morgan Stanley with analyst David Risinger saying the Opdivo + Yervoy combination showed worse efficacy cross-trial compared to Merck's (MRK) Keytruda+chemo combo. 3. Acacia (ACIA) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at BofA/Merrill and to Neutral from Overweight at Piper Jaffray. 4. International Paper (IP) downgraded to Sector Perform from Outperform at RBC Capital with analyst Paul Quinn saying the company has "considerable tailwinds" in its core North America containerboard business, as well as strong conditions in the pulp and paper business, but sees the potential acquisition of Smurfit Kappa (SMFTF) clouding the picture while producing a "considerable valuation overhang." 5. WWE (WWE) downgraded to Neutral from Overweight at JPMorgan with analyst David Karnovsky saying he views the stock's current risk/reward as more balanced ahead of the company's media rights cycle. Piper sees compelling entry levels for Lumentum and Oclaro
Yesterday's news of American suppliers being banned from shipping products to ZTE (ZTCOY) has created more compelling entry levels for a select group of optical stocks, Piper Jaffray analyst Troy Jensen tells investors in a research note. The name most impacted by the news is Acacia Communications (ACIA) with ZTE representing 30% of sales in 2017, the analyst adds. He believes the company, which he downgraded last night to Neutral, will likely not be able to recoup those losses. Names Zukin likes following yesterday's selloff are Lumentum (LITE) and Oclaro (OCLR) as Huawei represents a larger customer compared to ZTE, and he believes Huawei will gain customers at ZTE's expense. The analyst also continues to like Overweight-rated Fabrinet (FN) and II-VI (IIVI).

ZTE news negative for Acacia, neutral to positive for others, says MKM Partners
MKM Partners analyst Michael Genovese notes that press is reporting that ZTE Corp. (ZTDOY) is banned from purchasing U.S. technology for seven years for violating the terms of a previously settled sanctions violation case. While all component names are trading down on the news, the analyst has a more nuanced view since Huawei and Nokia (NOK) will gain share at ZTE's expense. Genovese views the news as negative for Acacia (ACIA), which had 30% revenue exposure to ZTE in 2017 and 16% in Q4. However, he thinks the news is positive for NeoPhotonics (NPTN), which has 40% exposure to Huawei and much smaller ZTE exposure, and for Nokia, which will gain some of ZTE's share. Additionally, the analyst sees the news as neutral to positive for Lumentum (LITE), Oclaro (OCLR) and Finisar (FNSR), which have significantly more Huawei and Nokia exposure than ZTE exposure.

ZTE ban 'bad news' for Acacia, Oclaro and Lumentum, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst James Kisner noted that Acacia Communications (ACIA) sells CFP-DCO modules to ZTE (ZTOCY) and he calls the news that the U.S. has banned sales by U.S. companies to ZTE "uncategorically bad news for Acacia," which derived 30% of 2017 sales from the Chinese OEM. It is also bad news for Oclaro (OCLR), which got 18% of its sales from ZTE in the fiscal year ending June 2017, added Kisner, who currently still expects Lumentum's (LITE) acquisition of Oclaro to take place. However, he also acknowledges the greater uncertainty around the deal in light of this news.

Acacia, Oclaro have most direct impact from ZTE ban, says B. Riley FBR
B. He identifies Fabrinet (FN) and Inphi (IPHI) as companies that are not directly impacted but likely to see a ripple effect due to supply chain exposure to ZTE. Kang also noted that Finisar (FNSR) and NeoPhotonics (NPTN) supply to Huawei, not ZTE, and he expects they will not be impacted by the announcement.

Google interest ups chances of in-flight Wi-Fi acquisition, says William Blair
"We have seen this movie before" is what William Blair analyst Louie DiPalma says after Bloomberg reported yesterday that Google (GOOG, GOOGL) is in advanced talks to acquire Nokia's in-flight connectivity hardware business. Google joins a long list of technology, telecom, and media providers that have exhibited a strategic interest in in-flight Wi-Fi, "although all have thus far stayed on the perimeter," DiPalma tells investors in a research note. The analyst notes that incumbents Gogo (GOGO), Panasonic (PCRFY), ViaSat (VSAT), Global Eagle Entertainment (ENT), and Inmarsat (IMASY) have invested billions toward satellite capacity and infrastructure. The industry is all about scale and potential new entrants would not have any, DiPalma contends. He believes it would take any new entrant many years to build a network from scratch, obtain regulatory approvals, and procure line-fit partnerships. The analyst thinks Google's interest in in-flight connectivity increases the probability that a tech or telecom company would buy an incumbent in the space. DiPalma has Outperform ratings on ViaSat and Gogo and a Market Perform rating on Global Eagle.

NeoPhotonics 'should be' acquired as consolidation continues, says Northland
Northland analyst Tim Savageaux noted the deal to acquire CoAdna struck by II-VI (IIVI), which he called a significant bet on a rebound in China demand and a reminder of the ongoing consolidation narrative in the 100G+ Optical group. Given that context, and noting there have been rumors that NeoPhotonics (NPTN) has been shopped for the last 6 months, he contends that NeoPhotonics "should be" acquired and "put out of their on-going misery." Finisar shares oversold at current levels, says William Blair
William Blair analyst Dmitry Netis points out that shares of Finisar have lost nearly 30% of their value since the March 8 earnings print and are down nearly 60% from highs in February 2017. The analyst sees "several reasons for investors to bottom-fish their entry into the stock." The risk/reward is "highly asymmetric" with the shares trading at book value, Netis tells investors in a research note titled "Oversold, Trading at Book Value Creates a Buying Opportunity; LBO, M&A, or Organic Reorg Are Next Catalysts." He finds it highly likely that the new CEO will announce an organic restructuring plan, which he views as a potential catalyst along with a potential acquisition or leveraged buyout. Goldman Sachs analyst Doug Clark believes Finisar fundamentals remain challenged and continue to see downside risk to Street estimates. The analyst reiterates a Sell rating on the shares, with a $15 price target, as he believes Datacom competition and price pressure will continue to weigh on revenues, margins, and profits. Over the next few months, Clark expects peer Q1 earnings results to reflect broader weakness in both Telecom and Datacom component end markets. Microsoft well positioned for another 'solid quarter of upside,' says KeyBanc

Further, Bracelin sees its growth trajectory inflecting higher this year as the cloud segment tops a $23B run-rate and margins further expand on operating efficiency at over $100B revenue scale.
