Morgan Stanley says watch Sprint capex as T-Mobile talks said to restart
After The Wall Street Journal reported that T-Mobile (TMUS) and Sprint (S) have resumed merger talks, Morgan Stanley analyst Simon Flannery noted that Sprint announced plans to accelerate network capex after the merger plans fell apart last time. If Sprint's capex comes in light this quarter and/or next quarter, it may be seen as potentially related to renewed conversations with T-Mobile as it could suggest Sprint has pushed off its investment plans, Flannery tells investors. Noting that Tower stocks sold off following the Journal's report, Flannery pointed out that the companies each disclosed direct overlaps in late 2016 of about 5% on average. Total consolidated combined T-Mobile/Sprint exposure for American Tower (AMT) was about 16%, was about 35% for Crown Castle (CCI) and was about 33% for SBA Communications (SBAC), all as of Q4 of 2017, the analyst stated.

Morgan Stanley discusses T-Mobile deal implications for competitors, towers
After T-Mobile (TMUS) and Sprint (S) announced a merger agreement, Morgan Stanley analyst Simon Flannery said that while the $43B in estimated synergies is "impressive," the key question is how likely is it that the companies can gain regulatory approval. On competition, he thinks the deal may contribute to a more benign competitive environment in the near-term and that AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) could benefit from market consolidation, though he adds that the new T-Mobile would be a formidable competitor in new areas such as 5G and fixed broadband. Flannery added that the deal will be an overhang on tower and fiber providers, noting that part of their $4B in annual network synergies involves a reduction in tower counts from 110,000 to 85,000 over time. However, the analyst said he would expect much more gear to be deployed on each tower and small cells will still expand to 50,000 from 10,000. Tower operators include American Tower (AMT), Crown Castle (CCI) and SBA Communications (SBAC), which are all lower in pre-market trading.

T-Mobile, Sprint deal has more hurdles than AT&T, Time Warner, says Jefferies
A horizontal merger between T-Mobile (TMUS) and Sprint (S) poses more significant regulatory hurdles than the contested AT&T (T), Time Warner (TWX) deal does, Jefferies analyst Scott Goldman tells investors in a research note after the Wall Street Journal reported the two companies are again in merger talks. The analyst believes potential regulatory remedies could include meaningful spectrum divestitures. With that said, he thinks the combined company would create "meaningful accretion," with free cash flow per share nearly 30% higher in year three. Using multiple analysis, Goldman thinks T-Mobile shares could be worth more than $88 in a deal scenario. The stock closed yesterday up 3.4% to $63.13. Further, the analyst recommends buying the tower stocks on yesterday's selloff given his view of significant regulatory hurdles for a Sprint, T-Mobile deal. He has Buy ratings on American Tower (AMT), Crown Castle (CCI) and SBA Communications (SBAC).

Narrowing gap between TSMC, Intel makes Apple's aspiration possible, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Mark Li believes that given Apple's (AAPL) experience in processor design, replacing Intel (INTC) processor with its own is possible. Further, the analyst says that the narrowing gap in process technology between TSMC (TSM) and Intel also makes Apple's aspiration possible, while Apple's vertical integration with OS and applications also puts it in a better position to challenge Intel. FormFactor estimates cut at Northland after Intel 10nm delay
Northland analyst Gus Richard said that it appears Intel (INTC) has pushed out its 10nm ramp again and he is now modeling the ramp in the second half of 2019, pushed back from the second half of 2018. Given the delay, his is cutting estimates for FormFactor's (FORM) Q2 and calendar 2018 revenue and also trimming his gross margin expectations on lower volume and weaker mix. However, he also said FormFactor is gaining share at TSMC (TSM) in advanced 10nm and 7nm nodes and that DRAM market demand continues to be strong. TSMC 'hiccup' should be considered transient, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Chris Kapsch said Taiwan Semiconductor's (TSM) below-consensus Q2 outlook and reduced full-year sales guidance is primarily due to near-term smartphone demand and seasonality, which should be considered transient. He still thinks bigger picture secular trends and drivers - including strong memory chip demand, as well as future growth tied to IoT, AI and 5G communications - remain in place. While TSMC's view for weaker than previously anticipated Q2 results increases risk for electronic chemical stocks Versum (VSM), Entegris (ENTG) and Cabot Micro (CCMP), Kapsch said he remains comfortable with his favorable views on Entegris and Cabot. He is more cautious on Versum, given more risk associated with the capital equipment cycle and his belief that its earnings growth may trail key peers. Kapsch keeps Buy ratings on Entegris and Cabot and a Hold rating on Versum.

Stifel says Alaska, JetBlue may be targets if 'Big 4' think they can consolidate
Stifel analyst Joseph DeNardi said in a note to investors prior to the open that the proposed merger of Sprint (S) and T-Mobile (TMUS), and the related approval process, is the first major test of the Trump administration's view on consolidation. Depending on how this case plays out, management teams at the "Big 4" airlines would have significant interest in acquiring Alaska Air (ALK) or JetBlue (JBLU) if they think they could be successful in doing so, he contends. He believes the current consensus in the industry is that Alaska will serve as buyer and consolidator within its segment, but should the Big 4 believe that they could be permitted to be buyers, the M&A outlook would likely change, DeNardi tells investors.

Fears over 'Amazon Pay' may be overdone, says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst Timothy Willi notes that media reports mentioned that Amazon (AMZN) is approaching small businesses about offering its "Amazon Pay" platform to accept payments and benefit from the lower transactions costs that Amazon can provide as a result of its scale. While the analyst believes this could potentially be a threat to names like PayPal (PYPL) and others, fears may be overdone and the impact of this strategy may not be as severe as expected. Specifically, Willi argues that merchants view Amazon as a competitor, PayPal has very competitive economics given the size of its volume and global basis, and many Amazon Pay shoppers are likely to be PayPal account holders and inertia may limit their inclination to switch to Amazon Pay at merchants where they are currently using PayPal.

Walmart deal for Flipkart more dilutive than anticipated, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Simeon Gutman noted that news reports heading up to Walmart's (WMT) deal for a majority stake in Flipkart had predicted a $12B transaction for about 60% of a business generating operating losses in the $1B range. However, the higher than expected magnitude of losses Walmart would absorb in India significantly raises the stakes on the trajectory of its U.S. business and clouds the near-term path, he said. He also questions why the company is investing outside the U.S. market, stating that it could have instead accelerated its third-party marketplace infrastructure, stepped up its partnership with Google Home (GOOG) to better compete with Amazon's (AMZN) Alexa, or intensified domestic investments in price and fulfillment. However, he does add that the deal prevents Amazon, for now, from building an "insurmountable" advantage in the important Indian market. The analyst says that the discussions with the company's customers and partners regarding increased scrutiny in the space suggest that Adobe "remains well placed to serve this market" and will see only a limited near-term disruption. MacMillan adds that the likelihood of "greater fragmentation" in social media advertising from regulatory changes will be positive for Adobe as a "digital marketing platform vendor that solves complexity". The analyst keeps his Outperform rating and $242 price target.
