Kount survey finds fewer merchants accepting Apple Pay

Kount, along with The Fraud Practice LLC, announced findings from the sixth annual 2018 Mobile Payments & Fraud Survey, which measures the state of mobile payments and mobile channel fraud from each prior survey year. In surveying nearly 600 merchants, the report found that several major mobile wallets have lost traction, with the percentage of respondents accepting Apple Pay (AAPL) in 2018 down from 48% to 35%, the most drastic decline of all mobile wallets, and Google Pay (GOOG, GOOGL) down from 38% to 25%. Support for PayPal (PYPL) increased from 48% to 64% while 10% accept AliPay (BABA) and 10% accept other e-wallets. The share of merchants who accept Samsung Pay (SSNLF), Visa Checkout (V), MasterPass (MA), and Chase Pay (JPM) all stayed constant from last year, while AMEX Express Checkout (AXP) enjoyed the biggest gain in support, growing acceptance from 9% to 16% of merchants.

Rumored Apple iPhone cuts primarily another mix shift, says BlueFin
BlueFin analyst John Donovan contends Apple has "modestly" cut its 2018 model iPhone builds while largely offsetting these cuts with increased builds of the existing models, leading him to lower his 2018 iPhone build estimate by 8M units in aggregate. His research points toward an "extraordinarily sharp ramp" in late August and through September, which not only led him to cut his shipment forecasts for the new iPhone models once again, but adds confidence to his "long-held" position that the LCD model is running 3-4 weeks behind the newer OLED models, Donovan tells investors. The analyst, who now estimates 2018 iPhone builds of 219M and shipments of 221M, said he remains positive on Apple's long-term story, but expects choppiness until September.

Apple iPhone inventories normalize, Galaxy S9 continue to disappoint, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst John Vinh says his latest carrier surveys indicate stable sell-through of Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 8/X, and in line with store expectations. Accordingly, days of inventory have normalized at about 5 DOI and are consistent with healthy levels seen in past cycles, he adds. Conversely, the analyst notes that sell-through of the Samsung's (SSNLF) GS9 continues to deteriorate, accompanied by an increase in DOI. However, he notes a significant reduction in absolute inventories. While GS9 gives him pause, stable sell-through, and normalized iPhone 8/X inventories leave him incrementally more constructive ahead of the 2H ramp of the new iPhone 9 cycle. Vihn recommends investors continue to own Broadcom (AVGO), Skyworks (SWKS), and Synaptics (SYNA).

Morgan Stanley says AT&T ruling may help narrow public/private media value gap
Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne said the court approval of AT&T's (T) acquisition of Time Warner (TWX) without conditions recognized the reality of new competition in the form of content investments from players such as Netflix (NFLX), Google's (GOOGL) YouTube, Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL) and Facebook (FB). This ruling sends a "clear message to other industry players" and market uncertainty on deal prospects could fall, which could mean that equity values will likely rise accordingly, Swinburne tells investors. He notes there remains a large gap, which may now narrow, between private market valuations and public multiples in many parts of media and cable, pointing to Discovery Inc. (DISCK) as an example illustrating that point.

Power Integrations could see upside from Apple design win, says Rosenblatt
Rosenblatt analyst Jun Zhang said "recent noise" surrounding Apple (AAPL) cutting iPhone production seems inaccurate and noted that he forecasts year-over-year production growth in the second half of the year. Zhang also noted that he believes Power Integrations (POWI) could benefit from a potential design win for all iPhone and iPad fast charging solutions. In early trading, Power Integrations is up $2.10, or about 3%, to $79 per share.

Applied Optoelectronics could be pressured by Google tightening, says Rosenblatt
Rosenblatt analyst Jun Zhang said checks point to a modest new tightening of capital spending at Alphabet's (GOOG) Google in Q2, which could lead to pressure on Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI). Among suppliers with modest exposure to Alphabet, Zhang currently sees minimal impact to Arista (ANET) and Juniper (JNPR). Zhang keeps a Sell rating on Applied shares.

'The best has yet to come' for Amazon, says SunTrust, raising PT to $2,000
SunTrust analyst Youssef Squali raised his price target on Amazon.com (AMZN) to $2,000 from $1,900 and maintained a Buy rating on shares, telling investors in a research note that "the best has yet to come" for Amazon. Squali sees more upside in the stock, and says Amazon is "one of our favorite names within our IDM group" with the company expanding into offline distribution, building a private label business at scale and challenging Facebook (FB) and Google (GOOGL) as a major marketing platform. He also contends that private label is one of the highly under appreciated trends within Amazon, which should, over time, give Amazon a strong "unfair" competitive advantage.

Goldman still constructive on Universal Display shares after conferences
Following last week's SID DisplayWeek and his firm's Technet conference in Hong Kong, Goldman Sachs analyst Brian Lee remains constructive on shares of Universal Display (OLED). The stock is rallying today after Korea's ETNews reported that Apple (AAPL) is planning to use OLED screens in all three of its iPhone models in 2019. Lee, who did not cite Apple in his research note this morning, continues to see an attractive setup into the second half of 2018 for Universal Display. Investor sentiment is "tepid" despite the potential for normalizing materials volume trends at Samsung (SSNLF) starting in Q3, continued strength in TVs, and mid-to-long term upside in blue phosphorescent, Lee wrote in a research note. The analyst reiterated a Buy rating on the shares with a $150 price target.

Surveys indicate iPhone inventories beginning to trend down, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst John Vinh says his carrier surveys indicate sell-through results were largely in line with lowered expectations. The analyst notes that demand for the Galaxy Samsung (SSNLF) 9 remains "very disappointing" and inventories remain bloated, as pricing and the lack of innovation appear to be culprits. These mixed results leave him slightly more constructive on owning the mobile supply chain stocks into 2H18 given the modest decline in Apple's (AAPL) iPhone inventories. Vinh's favorite mobile names are Broadcom (AVGO), Skyworks (SWKS), and Synaptics (SYNA).

Immersion results, guidance beat Street estimates, says Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Anthony Stoss reiterated a Buy rating and $17 price target on Immersion following the company's Q1 earnings report, in which the company beat Q1 consensus estimates and raised its FY18 guidance for both revenues and non-GAAP net income. Stoss noted that March cash of ~$139M implies a sizable Apple (AAPL) win, roughly in-line with the analyst's ~$90M estimate for this part of the agreement. Stoss believes that Immersion pushed for a longer term deal with Apple, with this part of the deal representing half of what he sees as a six-year agreement, with another similar payment from Apple coming for the second half of the agreement after three years. Stoss also believes that Samsung (SSNLF) and China each represent an opportunity of similar size to Apple.

Alibaba opportunity in China still 'vastly greater' than Amazon's in U.S., says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak said his previously published comparison of Amazon (AMZN) and Alibaba (BABA) sparked "strong client interest and engagement," and generated some questions around his calculation of Alibaba's China total addressable market. After making some revisions, Nowak lowered his total China TAM estimate for Alibaba to a base case of $6.7T in 2017 from $10.6T prior, and his base case for 2027 of $13.9T from $19.0T. However, even given the revisions, he estimates Alibaba's China TAM is 1.6X-2.5X larger than Amazon's U.S. total addressable market in 2027. However, Alibaba and Amazon have different business models, "so apples-to-apples TAM comparisons are hard to make," Nowak concedes. The firm has Overweight ratings on both stocks.

Bank of America is the best of the 'big four' U.S. banks, says BMO Capital
BMO Capital analyst James Fotheringham kept his Market Perform rating and $34 price target on Bank of America (BAC) after its in-line Q1 earnings but raised his FY18 EPS view to $2.62 from $2.59 and FY19 view to $3.18 from $3.12. Fotheringham says than in contrast, he lowered earnings forecasts for JPMorgan (JPM), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Citigroup (C) because of higher costs and lower revenues, but Bank of America's better than expected net interest income rise justifies his view of the bank as the "best of the bunch". The analyst also notes the bank's more favorable valuation trading at a below-average two-year-forward P/E multiple despite his forecast of double the core earnings growth rate of Bank of America's peers.

American Express 'top pick' among Payment Networks, says UBS
UBS analyst Eric Wasserstrom sees American Express (AXP) as his top pick among the Payment Networks, rating the company with a Buy and a $115 price target. The analyst is positive on the broader industry, saying his proprietary data suggests a robust growth trend, with the total addressable market for electronic payments estimated around $95T. Wasserstrom notes that the UBS survey of small and midsized merchants across 4 geographies suggests that 94% of respondents intend to add support to accept electronic payments. More specifically, he expects American Express to show "accelerating discount volumes and loan growth", supporting EPS growth and a high-level stability of profitability. Based on the differentiated view among analysts for American Express earnings, the analyst sees the company as a "beat and raise story". As part of his broader research note, as reported earlier, Wasserstrom has also assumed PayPay (PYPL) at Buy with a $90 price target, Visa (V) at Neutral with a $141 price target, and initiated MasterCard (MA) at Neutral with a $205 price target. He expects PayPal to benefit from "sustained volume growth" driven by engagement of its core constituencies and demand for its processor/gateway services from merchants. For Visa and MasterCard, the analyst sees sustained secular trends of growth in personal consumption expenditures and increasing adoption of electronic payments to drive annual revenue growth rates of up to 11% beyond FY18.
