Week in review: How Trump's policies moved stocks

Catch up on the top industries and stocks that were impacted, or were predicted to be impacted, by the comments, actions and policies of President Trump and his administration with this weekly recap compiled by The Fly: 1. CHINA TARIFFS: Citing a White House statement, CNBC reported on Monday that the United States Trade Representative was ordered to identify $200B in China goods that would be subject to a 10% tariff. The statement added that duties will go into effect "if China refuses to change its practices, and also if it insists on going forward with the new tariffs that it has recently announced." Apple (AAPL) may be hurt if China holds true on warnings of "countermeasures" from the country's Commerce Ministry after President Donald Trump threatened additional tariffs late Monday on $200B worth of Chinese goods, Barron's said. Apple relies on Asian suppliers for its some of its components. 2. EU AUTOS: Earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Germany's leading carmakers support the abolition of all import tariffs for cars between the EU and the U.S. in an effort to find a peaceful solution to the brewing trade war. The U.S. ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, has held closed-door meetings with the chiefs of all major German automotive companies, including bilateral meetings with the CEOs of Daimler (DDAIF), BMW (BMWYY) and Volkswagen (VLKAY), the report added. On Wednesday, Daimler announced it has made a new assessment of the earnings potential for the year 2018, with the "decisive factor" being that fewer than expected Mercedes-Benz SUV sales and higher than expected costs must be assumed because of increased import tariffs for U.S. vehicles into the Chinese market. On Friday, President Trump tweeted that based on the tariffs and trade barriers "long placed on the U.S. and it great companies and workers by the European Union," if these tariffs and barriers are not soon broken down and removed, the U.S. will be placing a 20% tariff on all of their cars imported here. 3. ZTE DEAL: ZTE Corp. (ZTCOY) and the U.S. government are continuing to work on an escrow pact that must be completed and funded with $400M before a ban on the Chinese company can be lifted, according to Reuters. The Commerce Department official noted that working out the escrow deal was part of a "normal process," the report added. President Trump and a group of lawmakers from the Senate and House of Representatives are expected to meet at the White House to discuss their dispute over how to penalize ZTE Corp., Reuters reported, citing a White House spokeswoman. On Friday, Kayla Tausche of CNBC tweeted that the ZTE deal is "going forward -- Latest $1b fine has been paid to the US gov't, a senior administration official confirms. $400M escrow still in process." 4. LOCKHEED MARTIN: The U.S. Senate has passed the National Defense Authorization Act banning the transfer of F-35s to Turkey until the secretary of defense submits a plan to remove Turkey from participation in the program, including the allocation of production of parts to each country, the Financial Times reported. The move, which comes amid increasing tensions with Turkey over its plan to install the Russian S400 air defense system, could ultimately hold up the sale of 100 aircraft worth about $10B but Lockheed Martin (LMT) said it still expects to hand over initial F-35s to Turkey in an exchange on June 21, likely before the bill becomes law. 5. STAMPS.COM: Shares of Stamps.com (STMP) were under pressure on Thursday after the White House issued a statement on its "Reform Plan and Reorganization Recommendations." The Trump administration called for a "sustainable Postal Service," adding, "Restructure the United States Postal System and return it to a sustainable business model. The Postal Service's financial difficulties have been an issue raised by past Administrations, GAO, members of both parties in both chambers of Congress, and the Postal Service itself for years." Stamps.com is an approved licensed vendor of the Postal Service and offers access to all its services online. "Week in Review" is The Fly's weekly recap of its recurring series of "Trump Effect" exclusive stories.

Rosenblatt shifts view on mix of LCD, OLED iPhones produced in 2H
Rosenblatt analyst Jun Zhang still estimates a total of 110M iPhone units being produced in the second half of this year, but has raised his estimate for the LCD models to 75-80M units, up from 60M units, and lowered his OLED model estimate to 30-33M units from a prior view of 50M units. Dialog Semiconductor acquisition of Synaptics would make sense, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst John Vinh notes that Synaptics (SYNA) and Dialog Semiconductor (DLGNF) announced they are in discussions regarding a potential acquisition. Strategically, the analyst believes this deal would make sense for Dialog Semiconductor as it would allow the company to offset the loss of its PMIC share at Apple (AAPL) and would allow it to diversify into IoT and other areas of mobile.

Morgan Stanley sees iPhone ASP upside potential depending on 6" LCD model price
In response to investor questions regarding iPhone Average Selling Price, or ASP, pressure in FY19, Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said her base case scenario analysis indicates that FY19 iPhone ASPs will likely vary from 2% growth, if Apple prices the 6.1" LCD iPhone close to iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus, to a 2% decline in a scenario where Apple discounts the price of the 6.1" model to drive unit demand. Her ultimate conclusion is that there is "modest upside risk" to her FY19 iPhone ASP estimate of $730 if Apple prices the non-flagship 6.1" LCD iPhone at a price above $700. Huberty keeps an Overweight rating and $214 price target on Apple shares.

Morgan Stanley compares automakers to Facebook, Apple in 'Auto 2.0' model
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas noted that auto companies' valuations have compressed to extremely low levels, but he believes that a move from a vehicle ownership model to a transportation subscriber model could expand the revenue opportunities for the potential "tollkeepers" for the monetization of content and data by "nearly an order of magnitude." Looking at U.S. technology leaders Facebook (FB) and Apple (AAPL), which are both valued on their installed base/subscriber models, can "offer valuable clues" regarding the opportunity for General Motors (GM) and other auto OEMs, said Jonas. Viewing the OEMs though the lens of a subscription model, which should be less cyclical and potentially less capital intensive over time than the current auto model, is relevant to analyzing auto stocks, according to Jonas, who adds that it is still too early to call a winner or loser in "Auto 2.0." Other publicly traded legacy automakers include Fiat Chrysler (FCAU), Ford (F), Honda (HMC), Nissan (NSANY), Toyota (TM), Volkswagen (VLKAY) and Daimler (DDAIF).

BMW, Tesla among 'biggest losers' following Chinese tariffs, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Robin Zhu notes that China's Ministry of Commerce announced 25% incremental tariffs on U.S. imports of 106 types of goods, including essentially all automobiles, soy beans, chemicals, aircraft, and other goods. If enforced, this would mean cars imported from the U.S. would face 50% import tariffs, up from the usual 25%. The analyst believes the biggest losers would be BMW (BMWYY), Mercedes (DDAIF), Tesla (TSLA). BMW and Mercedes import the largest volumes of cars from the U.S. into China, followed by is Tesla with14k units of projected imports, he points out.

Morgan Stanley says Softbank stake in Cruise significant 'far beyond' just GM
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said Softbank's (SFTBF) recently announced investment in GM Cruise "carries significance far beyond" General Motors (GM), arguing that the increasingly conspicuous involvement of "outside validators" such as large-cap tech firms and prominent investors can accelerate perception change in the capital markets about "Auto 2.0." He envisions the possible formation of two different companies currently held under one automaker's roof, which he dubs an Auto 2.0 "Yieldco" and an Auto 2.0 "Growthco." Converting car owners into monthly subscribers could open up significant revenue, profit, and value opportunities for traditional automakers, argues Jonas in a note to investors. Other automaking "OEMs" include Ford (F), Daimler (DDAIF), Toyota (TM), Honda (HMC), Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) and BMW Group (BAMXY).

Fiat Chrysler ending Fiat sales in U.S. would be 'sensible,' says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said he believes that if Bloomberg is correct and Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) does plan to stop selling Fiat branded cars in North America and China it would be a "sensible recognition" of how to allocate capital over the next five years. BMW (BMWYY), including MINI, sells 21 times more cars in the U.S. than Fiat does, noted Jonas, who said Bloomberg's report appears consistent with his high-level expectation that FCA will send the message that it is cutting investment or possibly exiting areas that don't add shareholder value and "doubling down"' on brands and businesses, like Jeep, that have untapped global potential. Jonas maintains an Overweight rating on Fiat Chrysler shares with a $28 price target.

Jefferies lists buys on 'wildly overdone' electric truck concerns
The ramp of electric trucks amp may be slower than in passenger cars, and incumbent truck makers are likely to remain key players, Jefferies analyst Stephen Volkmann tells investors in a research note. To a much greater extent than in passenger vehicles, commercial vehicle sales rely on uptime and return on investment, and are driven by brand relationship and dealer support, Volkmann adds. He views the "terminal multiple" concerns for established truck players as "wildly overdone" and recommends buying shares of Paccar (PCAR), Navistar (NAV), Volkswagen (VLKAY) and Volvo (VOLVY).

The analyst further states that he has taken a "relatively conservative" approach to modeling the ZTE contribution, while maintaining his view that "Acacia technology and exposure to the build-out of carrier metro networks, hyperscale data center interconnect, and the increasing use of coherent technology in ever-shorter distances in networks" justify a Buy rating.

NXP Semiconductors / Qualcomm deal still likely to happen, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Craig Hettenbach kept his Equal Weight rating and $127.50 price target on NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), saying his base case scenario remains that the deal with Qualcomm (QCOM) will be approved by China's Commerce Ministry. The analyst adds that China regulators' stance may be determined by the nature of the resolution around the ban on imports for ZTE (ZTCOY), which will be a "key development to monitor". Hettenbach also expects any extension of the merger date to result in a 8% decline for NXP Semiconductors stock price, while an outright rejection would see the stock down in $88-$96 per share range.

NXP Semiconductors downgraded to Hold at SunTrust on valuation
As reported earlier, SunTrust analyst William Stein downgraded NXP Semiconductors (NXPI) to Hold from Buy and kept his $119 price target, saying the current stock price is above fair value and demands "an explicit view" that the Qualcomm (QCOM) bid will receive approval from China regulators. Stein notes that currently, the likelihood of such approval would be "only a guess", but adds that the run-up in the stock price since his April upgrade was in response to a sentiment shift over trade negotiations with China, which has been "robust". The analyst further states that last week's agreement between the U.S. government and ZTE (ZTCOY) has made sentiment around the Qualcomm bid "sanguine".

AeroVironment well-positioned to win new Army contract, says Stifel
Separate from AeroVironment's (AVAV) recent Switchblade contract announcement, Stifel analyst Joseph DeNardi highlighted that the Army recently posted a request for information for Switchblade production from FY19-FY26. DeNardi said it is unclear what the likelihood is that AeroVironment continues to be the sole-source Switchblade provider as it has been from FY17-FY19, as he assumes multiple contractors will reply and suspects that offerings presumably from companies like Raytheon (RTN), Textron (TXT) and possibly Lockheed (LMT) will be more mature than they were a few years ago. Still, he is encouraged by the length of the performance period for the new RFI and views AeroVironment as well-positioned to win the competition, DeNardi tells investors. He keeps a Buy rating and $65 price target on the stock.

Defense weakness due to correction, not change in narrative, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Rajeev Lalwani noted that Defense stocks are down about 6% and underperforming an already weak market in the last few days, which he finds particularly surprising given the Q1 EPS beats from General Dynamics (GD), Lockheed Martin (LMT) and Northrop Grumman (NOC). He attributes the underperformance to three dynamics: outperformance year-to-date prior to the selloff; the catalyst of large budget step-ups having materialized; and fuller valuation, which has being corrected. None of these are fundamental, added Lalwani, saying he is still constructive on Lockheed, Raytheon (RTN) and Northrop.

U.S. exiting Iran deal minor negative for Boeing, Airbus, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Douglas Harned notes that President Trump announced that the U.S. will withdraw from the 2015 Iran nuclear accord, and will reinstate sanctions on that country. The analyst sees only minimal impact to commercial aerospace as neither Airbus (EADSY) nor Boeing (BA) will change production rates on this change, and the total number of orders affected represents just 2% of the companies' combined order backlogs. For defense contractors with significant Middle Eastern exposure, heightened regional tensions could drive increased demand for missile defense, in particular, but potentially also aircraft, ships, missiles, and vehicles, he contends. Harned believes Raytheon (RTN) is well positioned, having the highest exposure to missile defense and tactical missile sales to the Middle East, with Lockheed Martin (LMT) also a strong player.
