On The Fly: What to watch in Macy's earnings report

Macy's (M) is scheduled to report results of its second fiscal quarter before the market open on Wednesday, August 15, with a conference call scheduled for 9:30 am EDT. What to watch for: 1. TURNAROUND: Last year, Macy's CEO Jeff Gennette said he was "committed" to stabilizing its brick and mortar business, and that customers had been confused by "very complex" pricing. Earlier this year, the company said it has also developed an employee incentive program to drive results and engagement with associates at every level of the organization, with an emphasis on its hourly associates. Evercore ISI analyst Omar Saad said Macy's has improved customer engagement through a revamped and expanded loyalty program, leveraging social media, rolling out omni-channel capabilities, and testing more open-sell formats. The analyst is also encouraged by Macy's focus to better leverage social media by creating unique content that highlights the company's "fashion authority" and increasing engagement with customers. 2. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE: Macy's has been faced with competition from fast-fashion retailers like H&M, as well as an increase in online shopping on Amazon.com (AMZN). Macy's and other retailers are also looking to delve further into the beauty products market in a move to compete with Amazon and brick-and-mortar retailers like Wal-Mart (WMT) and Target (TGT). The current promotional environment as well as tourism sales and a shift to e-commerce has been a focus for many retailers as of late. CNBC said in July that retailers were starting to plan their own promotional events around Amazon's annual shopping event. Coresight Research estimated Prime Day 2018 sales reaching at least $3.4B globally, the report noted. In a move to compete with Ulta (ULTA) and Sephora, Macy's is planning to open roughly 60 new standalone Bluemercury stores through 2019 maintaining the chain's pace of expansion, Bloomberg said in July. 3. GUIDANCE: In May, Macy's raised fiscal 2018 adjusted earnings per share view to $3.75-$3.95 from $3.55-$3.75, above analysts' expectations at the time of $3.61, though the consensus has since moved higher to $3.87. Total sales are now expected to be down 1% to up 0.5%, against analysts' current estimates of $24.89B. Comparable sales on an owned plus licensed basis are expected to increase between 1%-2%, while comparable sales on an owned basis are expected to be 20-30 basis points below comparable sales on an owned plus licensed basis. Macy's previously forecast comparable sales on both an owned and an owned plus licensed basis to be flat to up 1%, while total sales were expected to be down between 0.5%-2%. At the time, Macy's said it still expected comp sales in 2H to be higher than 1H. At the time, CEO Gennette said "This is the most competitive retail environment I've ever seen." 4. EXECUTIVE CHANGES: In May, Macy's named Paula Price as its next CFO, effective July 9, succeeding Karen Hoguet who previously announced plans to retire at the end of the 2018 fiscal year. Hoguet will remain with Macy's in an advisory role to support the company during a transition period until February 2, 2019. Additionally, Macy's Naveen Krishna as its chief technology officer. Most recently, Krishna was vice president of technology for The Home Depot (HD).

After Party City deal, Credit Suisse finds Michaels selling on Amazon too
As previously reported, Credit Suisse analyst Seth Sigman reported that he has found Michael's (MIK) selling products on Amazon's (AMZN) marketplace via the company's "Darice" wholesale brand. This finding came after Party City (PRTY) disclosed earlier this morning that it would starting selling on the Amazon marketplace. Sigman thinks an Amazon partnership can help drive incremental growth for Michael's in the near-term and thinks the mix may skew to higher price points than the company's typical mix. He keeps an Outperform rating on Michael's share, which are up 4% to $21.02 in late morning trading.

Longer term, Redding favors the name and sees shares of U.S.-focused retailers like Kohl's, Dillard's (DDS), Burlington Stores (BURL) and American Eagle (AEO) as good options in a year of a strong dollar.

Piper believes Amazon's ad business should be valued at $150B-$190B
Amazon.com's advertising business "has been quietly growing into a massive driver of current and future profitability," Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson tells investors in a research note. The analyst estimates that in 2018, Amazon advertising revenue will be around $8B, potentially contributing greater than $3B to operating profit. By 2020, he expects Amazon ad revenue of $16B and by 2021, he believes it is highly likely that profits contributed from advertising will exceed those from Amazon Web Services. Applying an advertising comp multiple of 16 times to estimated 2020 Amazon advertising operating income suggests an ad business that should be valued at $150B-$190B, Olson contends. As such, he believes investors "should be focused on Amazon advertising now." The analyst reiterates an Overweight rating on Amazon shares with a $2,100 price target. The stock closed Friday down $12.22 to $1,886.30.

GOLDMAN SACHS CUTS ALNYLAM TO BUY: Goldman Sachs analyst Terence Flynn downgraded Alnylam (ALNY) to Buy from Conviction Buy. The analyst also lowered his price target for the shares to $155 from $193. Flynn said the lack of cardio data in the approved U.S. label for Onpattro is disappointing and could represent a disadvantage versus Pfizer's (PFE) competitor drug Tafamadis. Piper Jaffray analyst Edward Tenthoff recommended buying shares of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals on weakness following the approval of Onpattro. Morgan Stanley analyst David Lebowitz lowered his price target to $93, Nomura Instinet analyst Christopher Marai lowered his price target to $73, and Stifel analyst Paul Matteis maintained a Buy rating but cut his price target to $123 from $125 and slightly lowered his revenue ramp for the drug based on modestly reduced share in mixed-phenotype haTTR patients and lower share in cardiac-only haTTR patients. B. Riley FBR analyst Madhu Kumar raised his price target to $230. RUBIUS THERAPEUTICS INITIATED AT MULTIPLE FIRMS: Rubius Therapeutics (RUBY) was initiated with an Outperform at Leerink, an Overweight at JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley, as well as a Buy at Jefferies. PIPER JAFFRAY SAYS AMAZON AD BUSINESS GROWING INTO PROFIT DRIVER: Amazon's (AMZN) advertising business "has been quietly growing into a massive driver of current and future profitability," Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson told investors in a research note. Applying an advertising comp multiple of 16 times to estimated 2020 Amazon advertising operating income suggests an ad business that should be valued at $150B-$190B, Olson contended. IMPERIAL CAPITAL CUTS NETFLIX PRICE TARGET TO $494: Imperial Capital analyst David Miller lowered his price target for Netflix (NFLX) to $494 after he slightly reduced his global subscriber estimates. The analyst said that in the "interest of being conservative," he decreased his fiscal 2018 global subscriber estimate to 141.2M from 141.4M and fiscal 2019 global subscriber estimate to 164.4M from 166.3M. DISH DOWNGRADED TO SELL AT MOFFETTNATHANSON: MoffettNathanson analyst Craig Moffett downgraded Dish (DISH) to Sell from Neutral with a price target of $29 and noted that while the reported Q2 business conditions in the core satellite TV business were "genuinely better" amid reduced churn and slower subscriber losses, the Spectrum segment -- which holds "all" of the company's equity value -- is worse.

Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. PIPER CUTS 3D SYSTEMS TO UNDERWEIGHT: Piper Jaffray analyst Troy Jensen downgraded 3D Systems (DDD) to Underweight from Neutral with a $10 price target. He believes competition for the company's main product lines is intensifying. The analyst also thinks 3D will need to increase spending on direct sales, customer support and consulting, meaning "meaningful profitability" will likely be more challenged than revenue growth throughout 2018. He views the stock as overvalued. While Jensen continues to believe the overall 3D printing industry is "growing rapidly," he remains cautious on shares of 3D Systems and Stratasys (SSYS). He reiterated a Neutral rating on the latter. OPCO CUTS E.L.F. TO PERFORM: Oppenheimer analyst Rupesh Parikh downgraded e.l.f. Beauty (ELF) to Perform from Outperform saying the bull case is more uncertain from here. The analyst does not have a price target for the shares. Recent developments, including "still challenging trends" in the mass category and increased tariff uncertainty, bring greater risk to consensus forecasts, Parikh tells investors in a research note. He is harder-pressed to see the case for share outperformance. Ulta Beauty (ULTA) and Estee Lauder (EL) remain Parikh's top picks in beauty. FACEBOOK GETS MULTIPLE DOWNGRADES AFTER Q2 EARNINGS: Nomura Instinet analyst Mark Kelley downgraded Facebook (FB) to Neutral from Buy after the company delivered "underwhelming" Q2 results and guided for revenue growth deceleration through the end of the year. The revenue guidance paired with the expectation for mid-30% operating margins in the medium term or possibly longer means consensus numbers will be cut "drastically," he said. He lowered his price target on Facebook shares to $183 from $228. Facebook was also downgraded to Neutral from Buy by UBS analyst Eric Sheridan, who also lowered his price target for the shares to $180 from $212, and to Outperform from Strong Buy at Raymond James. Facebook shares are down over 19% in late morning trading. PIPER SAYS BIOGEN SELLOFF A BUYING OPPORTUNITY: Biogen (BIIB) shares "will recover and continue to work" into aducanumab's full Phase 3 data in 2020, Piper Jaffray analyst Christopher Raymond told investors. With the stock having run up into these data, the analyst said he understood the "sell-the-news" phenomenon. He believes, however, that the fundamental concerns he's heard from investors "don't seem to hold water." The analyst said to buy Biogen shares on the selloff. He kept an Overweight rating on the name with a $400 price target.

Boeing, Tesla, Nvidia make Morgan Stanley 'key man risk' list
Morgan Stanley equity strategist Mark Savino noted that about 12% of CEO jobs among S&P 500 companies turned over in 2017, noting that this was the highest level of CEO departures since before the financial crisis. The 59 stocks of S&P 500 companies that had CEOs depart in 2017 underperformed the market by 11% over the next 12 months, or since the departure for instances that were less than 12 months ago, noted Savino. In cooperation with the firm's U.S. analysts, Savino and his team identified the companies in each sector they believe face the greatest level of "key man risk," which includes: Boeing (BA), Tesla (TSLA), ADT Inc. (ADT), Moody's (MCO), TransUnion (TRU), Arista Networks (ANET), Church & Dwight (CHD), Coca-Cola (KO), Monster Beverage (MNST), Coupa Software (COUP), Salesforce (CRM), FireEye (FEYE), MongoDB (MDB), Microsoft (MSFT), New Relic (NEWR), XPO Logistics (XPO), Hilton (HLT), Las Vegas Sands (LVS), Best Buy (BBY), Ulta (ULTA), Aflac (AFL), Athene Holding (ATH), Lincoln National (LNC), Arthur J. Enterprise value of Alphabet's Waymo raised to $175B at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak increased his enterprise value estimate for Alphabet's Waymo unit from $75B for ride sharing only to $175B given his analyses for two other emerging business models, namely logistics and licensing. He believes Waymo remains on track to launch an autonomous ride hailing service in Phoenix this year and believes this business could be worth about $80B over the long-term. Partnerships with Walmart (WMT), DDR (DDR) and Peterbilt speak to Waymo's logistics focus, said Nowak, who sees the company potentially having a $90B logistics business. Additionally, he sees a roughly $7B licensing opportunity, pointing to the company's FCA (FCAU) relationship as a model of how companies could pay a license fee to Waymo for its autonomous technology. Given his view of Waymo being a key part of Alphabet's long-term value, Nowak raised his sum of the parts valuation to $1,550 from $1,400. He has an Overweight rating and $1,325 price target on Alphabet shares.

The analyst points to the company's lower visibility around the second-half of 2018 and 2019 organic sales and profit growth because of reduced promotional activity at Walmart (WMT), rising costs, slower category growth, and delayed Cloverhill acquisition synergies.

VERTICAL GROUP RAISES SNAP RATING: Vertical Group analyst Phil Leggiere upgraded Snap (SNAP) to Mixed from Negative citing expectations for strong second half 2018 spending. Snap is higher by over 1% in late morning trading. PIVOTAL CUTS SPOTIFY TO HOLD: Pivotal Research analyst Jeffrey Wlodarczak downgraded Spotify (SPOT) to Hold from Buy with an unchanged price target of $200. The analyst cited valuation for the downgrade, given the "material rise" in the shares since his initiation report on May 29. Further, he increasingly views consensus 2018 premium monthly active user growth expectations as too aggressive. He lowered his Q2 premium subscriber MAU estimate from 6M to 5.5M, versus the consensus at 7M. Spotify's current valuation is fair and does not leave a lot of room for "operational/market hiccups," Wlodarczak told investors. DEUTSCHE SEES AMERITRADE/E-TRADE MERGER MAKING SENSE: Deutsche Bank analyst Brian Bedell continues to see a merger between TD Ameritrade (AMTD) and E-Trade (ETFC) as making strategic and financial sense. With TD Ameritrade's integration of recently acquired Scottrade progressing better than expectations, a merger scenario with E-Trade is "becoming more compelling," Bedell told investors. He updated his merger scenario model, raising his hypothetical merger scenario value of E-Trade from TD Ameritrade's perspective to $77 from $72, nearly a 30% premium to the current share price. Bedell raised his price target for TD Ameritrade to $77 from $72 and for E-Trade to $72 from $70. He kept Buy ratings on both stocks. GORDON HASKETT UPGRADES TARGET, DOWNGRADES WALMART: Gordon Haskett analyst Chuck Grom upgraded Target (TGT) to Accumulate from Hold and raised his price target on shares to $86 from 74 to reflect the recent acceleration in traffic. Grom said geolocation data and proprietary card data support his Q2 4.5% comp growth estimate. Grom also downgraded Walmart (WMT) to Hold from Accumulate and lowered its price target to $92 from $98. Grom thinks there are few near-term catalysts on the horizon and said the margin outlook is not as transparent following a period of improvement and stabilization.
