Fly Intel: Wall Street's top stories at midday

Stocks opened deep in negative territory and continued to fall throughout the morning. Turkey continues to blame the U.S. for its economic woes and imposed retaliatory tariffs on U.S. products because the White House had increased its own tariff levels last week. Concerns about the Turkish economy continue to rise, but the U.S. exposure remains small. However, given the thin summer trading levels, potential for contagion in other emerging markets and lack of other market moving news, Turkey remains center stage. ECONOMIC EVENTS: In the U.S., retail sales rose 0.5% in July, with the ex-auto component up 0.6%, which was a little better than expected. Nonfarm productivity was reported to have grown at a 2.9% pace in Q2, which slightly beat estimates, with unit labor costs down 0.9% in the preliminary report. Industrial production rose 0.1% in July, with capacity utilization steady at 78.1%. Business inventories rose 0.1% in June, with sales up 0.3%, as expected. The Empire State manufacturing index bounced 3 points to a 10-month high of 25.6 in August. The NAHB housing market index fell 1 tick to 67 in August. COMPANY NEWS: Shares of Macy's (M) have declined 13% despite the department store retailer having reported better than expected second quarter sales and earnings and raising its full-year profit outlook. Macy's comparable sales on an owned plus licensed basis were up 0.5% for the second quarter, and CEO Jeff Gennette said the company "delivered strong performance in the first half of the year" and was "pleased to report" its "third consecutive quarter of comparable sales growth"... Constellation Brands (STZ, STZ.B) announced that it will increase its ownership interest in Canada's Canopy Growth (CGC) to 38% by acquiring 104.5M shares and has the option to raise its stake further to 50%. As a result, Canopy Growth will "immediately upon closing have proceeds of approximately C$5 billion to bolster its leadership position in the global cannabis industry," the companies stated. The beer and wine maker said it remains committed to its investment grade rating and therefore has no plans to engage in mergers, acquisitions or share repurchase activity for about 18-24 months post the deal closing. Following the announcement, Canopy shares trading in New York surged 23% higher, while Constellation Class A shares were down 8%. MAJOR MOVERS: Among the noteworthy gainers was KMG Chemicals (KMG), which jumped 16% after it agreed to be acquired by Cabot Microelectronics (CCMP) for $1.6B. Cabot Microelectronics slid 8% after the news. Also higher was PetIQ (PETQ), which gained 23% after reporting quarterly results. Among the notable losers was Diamondback Energy (FANG), which slid 10.5% after it agreed to acquire Energen (EGN) in an all-stock transaction valued at roughly $9.2B. Energen shares rose 4% after the news. Also lower was Casa Systems (CASA), which fell 21% after reporting quarterly results. INDEXES: Near midday, the Dow was down 245.99, or 0.97%, to 25,053.93, the Nasdaq was down 120.64, or 1.53%, to 7,750.25, and the S&P 500 was down 29.55, or 1.04%, to 2,810.41.

Gas prices, wet weather put a damper on beverage sales, says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog senses that elevated gas prices and a rainy start to the summer dampened the mood of her c-store retailer contacts this Memorial Day. As such, the analyst maintains her cautious outlook on the c-store channel. With the exception of a few categories where demand appears to be immune to higher fuel costs, especially import beers, which outperformed - a clear positive for Constellation Brands (STZ), she is concerned that these negative trends could negatively impact many beverage manufacturer's results near-term. This includes Monster Beverage (MNST), due to its higher exposure to c-stores and PepsiCo (PEP), as discretionary snack sales could be vulnerable to substitution, Herzog added.

Cabot Microelectronics price target raised to $134 from $123 at Loop Capital

TSMC 'hiccup' should be considered transient, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Chris Kapsch said Taiwan Semiconductor's (TSM) below-consensus Q2 outlook and reduced full-year sales guidance is primarily due to near-term smartphone demand and seasonality, which should be considered transient. He still thinks bigger picture secular trends and drivers - including strong memory chip demand, as well as future growth tied to IoT, AI and 5G communications - remain in place. While TSMC's view for weaker than previously anticipated Q2 results increases risk for electronic chemical stocks Versum (VSM), Entegris (ENTG) and Cabot Micro (CCMP), Kapsch said he remains comfortable with his favorable views on Entegris and Cabot. He is more cautious on Versum, given more risk associated with the capital equipment cycle and his belief that its earnings growth may trail key peers. Kapsch keeps Buy ratings on Entegris and Cabot and a Hold rating on Versum.

Positive read-across from Harmonic results for Arris/Casa Systems, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst James Kisner notes that Harmonic (HLIT) reported Q2 earnings, with Q3 guidance light but guiding Cable Access to increase quarter over quarter in Q3 and Q4. The analyst generally views the "nice" sequential positive ramp in Harmonic's Cable Access business and expectation for a continued ramp in Q3 and Q4 as a positive indicator for spending trends on broadband infrastructure by cable operators, good news for Arris (ARRS) and Casa Systems (CASA). On the negative side, Kisner pointed out that one could take the "glass half empty" view that Harmonic is taking some share in the cable access space, potentially at the expense of other players, but he believes Harmonic's revenue generation remains relatively small.
