Apple could be hit by Japan's plan to end smartphone bundling, Reuters reports

Japan is looking to force wireless carriers to cut their monthly fees and stop bundling the cost of smartphones with wireless services, a move that could impact Apple's (AAPL) iPhone sales as consumers opt for cheaper devices, Reuters reports, citing a senior telecoms ministry source. Wireless carriers in Japan include NTT Docomo (DCM), KDDI (KDDIY) and SoftBank (SFTBF). Reference Link

Arista Networks products found in Apple data center, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Alex Kurtz noted that an article posted by azcentral.com shows an Arista Networks (ANET) 7500 series spine switch in several racks of Apple's (AAPL) Mesa, Arizona data center. Apple has been a long speculated customer of Arista, but the iPhone maker "is not known to readily disclose its use of third party technologies," noted Kurtz, who has an Overweight rating on Arista shares.

Apple downgraded to Sell from Neutral at New Street Research
New Street Research analyst Pierre Ferragu downgraded Apple to Sell from Neutral, stating that he believes the iPhone X has been so successful and well received by consumers that it has brought forward demand, leading him to expect a "material disappointment" in 2019. Ferragu expects iPhone revenues to decline 8% in 2019 versus the consensus view of 1% growth. He lowered his price target on Apple shares to $165 from $170.

Apple price target raised to $250 from $230 at BofA/Merrill
BofA/Merrill analyst Wamsi Mohan said he has increased confidence in diversified Services revenue growth following analysis if third-party data of App Store revenue. Games relative contribution is coming down and incremental revenue growth is now being driven by non-gaming categories, Mohan said in a report to investors. As a result, the analyst raised his Services revenue estimates by approximately $800M in 2019 and is assuming slightly higher margins. Mohan reiterated his Buy rating on Apple shares and increased his price target to $250 from $230.

Apple price target raised to $250 from $230 at BofA/Merrill
BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Wamsi Mohan said his analysis of third-party data indicates that the relative contribution from games to App Store revenue is coming down and he views this diversifying away from gaming as bullish for Apple's Services business. The strong growth rate of non-gaming categories gives him increased confidence in the sustainability of strong App Store sales, leading the analyst to raise his Services revenue estimate for 2019 by about $800M and increase his overall FY19 revenue estimate for Apple to $294.9B. Mohan, who increased his price target on Apple shares to $250 from $230, keeps a Buy rating on the name.

Assurant price target raised to $129 from $112 at SunTrust
SunTrust analyst Mark Hughes raised his price target on Assurant (AIZ) to $129 and kept his Buy rating, saying the company's operating environment within key end markets was generally healthy. Hughes notes that this should position the company to top consensus earnings for the quarter as it integrates TWG Holdings earlier than anticipated. The analyst also sees the valuation on Assurant as favorable given its post-integration expected run-rate earnings growth, stating that the company should "continue to outperform the broader smartphone industry" after a 18% expansion in devices covered during Q1 thanks to its emerging relationship with KDDI (KDDIY).

General Motors upgraded to Outperform after SoftBank investment at Evercore ISI
As previously reported, Evercore ISI analyst George Galliers upgraded General Motors (GM) to Outperform from In Line after SoftBank's (SFTBF) Vision Fund agreed to invest in the company's Cruise autonomous driving unit in a deal that values the unit at $11.5B. Galliers said he had been assigning no value to the Cruise assets before the announcement. Under his new sum-of-the-parts valuation, Galliers applies a 6.0x multiple on GM's core, attributes a value of about $8 per share for the Cruise assets and about 60c per share for GM's stake in Lyft before applying a 25% discount to both of the latter. He raised his price target on GM shares to $50 from $47.

Morgan Stanley says Softbank stake in Cruise significant 'far beyond' just GM
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said Softbank's (SFTBF) recently announced investment in GM Cruise "carries significance far beyond" General Motors (GM), arguing that the increasingly conspicuous involvement of "outside validators" such as large-cap tech firms and prominent investors can accelerate perception change in the capital markets about "Auto 2.0." He envisions the possible formation of two different companies currently held under one automaker's roof, which he dubs an Auto 2.0 "Yieldco" and an Auto 2.0 "Growthco." Converting car owners into monthly subscribers could open up significant revenue, profit, and value opportunities for traditional automakers, argues Jonas in a note to investors. Other automaking "OEMs" include Ford (F), Daimler (DDAIF), Toyota (TM), Honda (HMC), Fiat Chrysler (FCAU) and BMW Group (BAMXY).

General Motors price target raised to $53 at RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Joseph Spak kept his Outperform rating on General Motors (GM) and nudged his price target to $53 from $52, saying the recent $2.25B investment by Softbank (SFTBF) adds validation to the company's GM Cruise robo-taxi offering plans. Aside from the validation, Spak notes that the investment "provides capital to reach scale commercialization, affords GM capital allocation flexibility, and unlocks GM share price value as Cruise around $7 per share."
