On The Fly: Top five analyst downgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst downgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Clorox (CLX) downgraded to Underweight from Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley with analyst Dara Mohsenian saying valuation looks "stretched" on muted earnings growth and lowered his fiscal 2019 earnings estimate by 2% to reflect deterioration in U.S. Household Products sector. 2. Adtran (ADTN) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Argus with analyst Jim Kelleher saying the company has pushed out its expectations for a key client conducting a strategic review of spending, leading to revenue decline for its North America segment to an all-time low. 3. Align Technology (ALGN) downgraded to Equal Weight from Overweight at Morgan Stanley with analyst Steve Beuchaw saying his web trends tracking implies growth in the next 1-2 quarters slows to 25% from 35%. 4. ConocoPhillips (COP) downgraded to Hold from Buy at Edward Jones with analyst Jason Gammel citing valuation following the recent rally in the shares. 5. Valvoline (VVV) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Longbow with analyst Dmitry Silversteyn saying he sees a slower pace of price realization in Quick Lubes combined with a higher cost outlook, limiting earnings upside. Adtran price target lowered to $18 from $22 at Needham
Needham analyst Richard Valera lowered his price target on Adtran (ADTN) to $18 after the company's Q1 earnings miss and lower than expected Q2 outlook. The analyst points to continued slowdown at Adtran's key customer CenturyLink (CTL), adding that its vectoring revenue is unlikely to return to normal. Despite those challenges, Valera points to Adtran management expressing confidence in the ramp of "several programs" that should drive improved earnings in the second half of this year and in 2019, keeping his Buy rating.

Adtran downgraded to Market Perform after earnings at Northland
As previously reported, Northland analyst Tim Savageaux downgraded Adtran (ADTN) to Market Perform from Outperform following the company's Q2 report and Q3 revenue guidance that met consensus, stating that he views the shares as fairly valued given that he believes the earnings power needed to support a higher share price is "still a ways off." While Adtran is "slowly but clearly diversifying away" from CenturyLink (CTL), Savageaux has lowered expectations for any snap-back at CenturyLink and sees slower than expected progress at other U.S. Tier 1 telecom companies, he tells investors. The analyst, who reduced his estimates for 2019, cut his price target on Adtran shares to $17 from $20.

Positive read-across from Harmonic results for Arris/Casa Systems, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst James Kisner notes that Harmonic (HLIT) reported Q2 earnings, with Q3 guidance light but guiding Cable Access to increase quarter over quarter in Q3 and Q4. The analyst generally views the "nice" sequential positive ramp in Harmonic's Cable Access business and expectation for a continued ramp in Q3 and Q4 as a positive indicator for spending trends on broadband infrastructure by cable operators, good news for Arris (ARRS) and Casa Systems (CASA). On the negative side, Kisner pointed out that one could take the "glass half empty" view that Harmonic is taking some share in the cable access space, potentially at the expense of other players, but he believes Harmonic's revenue generation remains relatively small.

Investors should use pullback in Arris to buy more stock, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst James Kisner kept his Buy rating and $35 price target on Arris, saying the market's negative view on the stock has been overstated by last week's reports suggesting increasing competition to its Network and Cloud business by the adoption of Distributed Access Architectures. Kisner adds that the reports ignore the underlying motivation behind the adoption of "fiber deep" architectures, which is a positive for Arris as it enables a "significant increase" in IP bandwidth. The analyst recommends that investors use the weakness in Arris stock as a buying opportunity.

MaxLinear Q2 likely to be at lower end of guidance, says Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Seymore believes headwinds within MaxLinear's (MXL) Connected Home segment are likely to yield Q2 results toward the lower end of guidance and Q3 revenues that are likely to slightly decline quarter-over-quarter. Further, the analyst believes the transition from DOCSIS 3.0 to DOCSIS 3.1 has been delayed at Arris (ARRS), MaxLinear's largest customer, thereby creating an additional headwind for Q2 and Q3. Seymore lowered his estimates for MaxLinear and expects the stock to remain range-bound. The analyst cut his price target for the stock to $19 from $21 and keeps a Hold rating on the name.

As previously reported, Morgan Stanley analyst James Faucette upgraded Corning to Overweight from Equal Weight, stating that the number one question he gets from investors is about how the display market has remained so healthy despite weakness in the panel market over the past couple of years. The analyst, who thinks concerns over the display segment have been "overdone," notes supply and demand are more in unison, the company maintains a cost advantage, and Corning dominates where the display market is healthiest. He also contends that expansion opportunities are closer than they appear as he believes there will be demonstrated traction in one, if not multiple, of Corning's areas of investment in the coming years. Deutsche makes 'contrarian call' on Juniper, upgrades shares to Buy
Deutsche Bank analyst Vijay Bhagavath upgraded Juniper Networks to Buy from Hold and raised his price target for the shares to $32 from $25. The stock closed Friday down 7%, or $2.08, to $26.18. The analyst says he's "going against the grain" and making a "contrarian call." The post-earnings selloff on the "better than feared" Q2 results and below consensus Q3 guidance, which is primarily related to switch router upgrade timing at a handful of cloud and service provider customers, provides a "reasonable entry point," Bhagavath tells investors in a research note. He believes "robust" switch router and next generation security refresh cycles will start in fiscal 2019 and that Juniper's fundamentals will improve from fiscal 2019 through fiscal 2021.

BOFA UPGRADES AT&T TO BUY: Bank of America Merrill Lynch upgraded AT&T (T) to Buy from Neutral as analyst David Barden is positive on AT&T's 20-year low P/E multiple, Timer Warner merger benefits, favorable emerging wireless business trends, and a call option on value extraction from the merger of AT&T's distribution network with Time Warner's content and ad inventory. He keeps a $37 price target on AT&T shares. DEUTSCHE UPS JUNIPER IN 'CONTRARIAN' CALL: Deutsche Bank analyst Vijay Bhagavath upgraded Juniper Networks (JNPR) to Buy from Hold and raised his price target for the shares to $32 from $25. The analyst said he's "going against the grain" and making a "contrarian call." The post-earnings selloff on the "better than feared" Q2 results and below consensus Q3 guidance, which is primarily related to switch router upgrade timing at a handful of cloud and service provider customers, provides a "reasonable entry point." He believes "robust" switch router and next generation security refresh cycles will start in fiscal 2019 and that Juniper's fundamentals will improve from FY19 through FY21. STIFEL CUTS SYNCHRONOS TO SELL: Stifel analyst Tom Roderick downgraded Synchronoss (SNCR) to Sell from Hold, stating that recent filings reveal that liquidity issues loom, the company is "out of levers, and time is not on their side." The turnaround required to keep the company from fundraising "feels Herculean," added Roderick, who lowered his price target on Synchronoss shares to $3 from $8. BUCKINGHAM SAYS FORCED SALE OF CHARTER ASSETS 'UNLIKELY': Buckingham analyst Matthew Harrigan noted that New York's Public Service Commission has moved to push Charter (CHTR) out of the state and presented the company with a 60 day ultimatum to find a buyer for its assets there due to what it views as "repeated failures" to honor its commitments around the 2016 merger with Time Warner Cable. While he thinks an extended court battle seems "virtually certain," Harrigan does not see much likelihood of any forced disposition of its New York State assets. He keeps a Buy rating and $397 price target on Charter shares.

Full ban of sales to Huawei 'highly improbable,' says Needham
Needham analysts Alex Henderson and N. Quinn Bolton said they sees the chances of an outright ban of sales to Huawei as "extremely low," adding that it is their understanding the probe into Huawei has been ongoing for the last two years while noting that the ZTE probe took over five years to complete. The ironic impact of any escalation in trade tension could be an increase in demand from Huawei to build an inventory buffer should there be a supply disruption, added the analysts, who also say they would not be surprised to see a trade agreement with China include a resolution of the ZTE (ZTCOY) ban and possibly an agreement on the scope of action against Huawei.

Nanometrics downgraded to Neutral at DA Davidson on valuation
As reported earlier, DA Davidson analyst Thomas Diffely downgraded Nanometrics (NANO) to Neutral and kept his $44 price target, saying that after outperforming its peer group over the past few years, the stock now trades at a 40% premium to its peers. The analyst notes that the outperformance was warranted based on the company's strong leverage of its NAND producers, wins in the DRAM market, and exposure to emerging memory customers in China, with the company registering its 4th consecutive year of double digit growth in 2017. Despite this positive backdrop, Diffely believes that Nanometrics stock appreciation "recently outpaced fundamentals" and recommends that investors consider MKS Instruments (MKSI) and Rudolph Technologies (RTEC) for their "equally strong" growth drivers.

Silicom price target lowered to $50 from $90 at Needham
Needham analyst Alex Henderson lowered his price target on Silicom to $50 to reflect the impact and the selloff in the stock price from one of the company's major cloud customers pulling out of deploying its technology. Henderson contends that the decision is driven by the customer's problem in implementing the solution rather than the product's intrinsic value. The analyst keeps his Buy rating on Silicom, adding that the stock price reaction "looks overdone".

Silicom price target raised to $90 from $75 at Needham
Needham analyst Alex Henderson raised his price target on Silicom to $90, citing strong ramp and lengthening visibility from the company's deals signed over the past year. The analyst says the booked deals could double the size of the company over the next two years as they ramp to full production in that time span. Henderson keeps his Buy rating on Silicom.

Xcerra downgraded to Hold at Needham on acquisition
As reported earlier, Needham analyst Y. Edwin Mok downgraded Xcerra (XCRA) to Hold from Buy after the announcement that it is being acquired by Cohu for $9 per share in cash and 0.21 a share of Cohu (COHU) stock. Mok says there is limited upside from the deal's combined price of $13.92 per share and does not see the possibility of another bidder emerging. While the analyst expects some regulatory scrutiny given the product overlaps of the two companies, he ultimately sees the deal winning approval.

Xcerra attractive in either scenario of Cohu deal uncertainty, says DA Davidson
DA Davidson analyst Thomas Diffely keeps his Neutral rating and $14 price target on Xcerra (XCRA), saying that its "solid" results and momentum from recent share gains make it an attractive investment regardless of the outcome of the pending Cohu (COHU) acquisition. The analyst notes that the regulatory process has been unpredictable over the past year, but he is positive on the stock based on the "combination of a somewhat modest premium to be paid by Cohu and the strong underlying business activity".

ON Semiconductor pullback a buying opportunity, says Mizuho
Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh views the recent pullback in shares of ON Semiconductor (ON) as a buying opportunity. The analyst attributes the selloff to concerns of a peaking semi cycle, but points out that over the last four-years, ON's exposure to auto and industrial revenue has almost doubled. However, the stock trades at a 50% discount to automotive and industrial peers including Texas Instruments (TXN), NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), Analog Devices (ADI), Maxim Integrated (MXIM) and Monolithic Power (MPWR), Rakesh tells investors in a research note.

Investor meetings adding to confidence in TowerJazz, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Cody Acree kept his Buy rating and $36 price target on TowerJazz after attending the company's investor meetings, saying the discussions have left him with an increased conviction in its prospects. The analyst recommends that investors take advantage of the recent weakness in the stock price, as the issues that drove the disappointing Q3 guidance will prove to be "transitory", caused by "exaggerated seasonality in the mobile market and specifically an elongated inventory correction in the iPhone supply chain." Acree expects the "valuation dislocation" to be corrected as TowerJazz approaches its FY18 outlook update.
