Buy
Dollar General price target raised to $117 from $107 at MKM Partners
MKM Partners analyst Patrick McKeever raised his price target on Dollar General (DG) to $117 and kept his Buy rating as part of his broader research note on the discount retail sector. The analyst notes that he is watching the Farm Bill and its impact on food stamp assistance as it relates to the lower-income consumers, but still believes that the macro backdrop for that sector is good as evidenced by Walmart's (WMT) 4.5% Q1 comp growth. McKeever prefers Dollar General to Neutral-rated Dollar Tree (DLTR) given its "ongoing execution issues and lagging productivity". The analyst adds that he is positive on Dollar General's store economics after the company opened a record number of stores last year and grew its square footage by 9%, which is "one of the highest rates in retail".

Dollar Tree store turnaround execution 'inconsistent', says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba kept his Buy rating and $120 price target on Dollar Tree (DLTR), saying he expects the management to create shareholder value by "fixing" the Family Dollar stores or selling the franchise. The analyst notes that his recent visits to several stores indicate an "uneven" progress in execution - most were in good condition, but some had "rampant out-of-stocks, clogged aisles, dirty floors and merchandise displays, and generally apathetic staffers". Chukumba further states that Dollar Tree's current valuation discount relative to Dollar General (DG) is unwarranted because of its "rosier long-term earnings growth prospects".

Dollar General price target raised to $118 from $113 at Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst Edward Kelly raised his price target for Dollar General (DG) to $118 from $113 ahead of quarterly results. The analyst notes that expectations seem high given the 23% increase in the stock since last quarter's weather-related disappointment. While Kelly expects solid results and raised his estimates accordingly, he cautions investors not get carried away as retailers with high consumable exposure like Dollar General may not see the acceleration produced by Walmart (WMT) and Target (TGT). The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating on Dollar General's shares as the demand backdrop looks supportive of strong results through a massive low-income refund cycle in early 2019.

As previously reported, Atlantic Equities analyst Sam Hudson upgraded Dollar Tree to Overweight from Neutral and a $110 price target. In a research note to investors, Hudson says that strength in the legacy Dollar Tree banner has been overwhelmed by renewed investors concerns over the Family Dollar business, and contends that while improvement is "evident," external factors impacted Family Dollar's results in Q1, creating an "extremely timely entry point" into Dollar Tree's stock. The analyst says that an aggressive, industry-wide promotional environment has masked progress at Family Dollar, and feels that Q1 was a "pause" in sequential improvement as management's initiatives gain traction.

The analyst also lowers his FY19 EPS view to $2.68 from $2.78 to reflect rising cost pressures and recent sales trend, but boosts his "upside scenario" profit target to $55 to account for the possibility of strategic alternatives. Ahead of the company's strategic review and Q4 EPS, the analyst concludes that with proper execution, U.S. soup can be stabilized and in time Campbell can achieve its long-term growth rates, portfolio adjustments should include the divestitures of C-Fresh and Asian Global Baking & Snacking, and a sale of Campbell Soup at this time is unlikely to maximize fair value. Piper views sale of Campbell Soup as unlikely
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Lavery does not expect a sale of Campbell Soup (CPB) to be part of its strategic update. He thinks Kraft Heinz (KHC), viewed as a potential bidder if Campbell Soup were for sale, "prefers brands with stronger equity and market share positions and may not be interested." Lavery lowered his price target for Campbell shares to $35 from $36 and keeps an Underweight rating on the name.

Deutsche Bank says 'sticking with' off-price, athletic brands in apparel space
Deutsche Bank analyst Paul Trussell previewed earnings for apparel companies, telling investors in a research note that he is "sticking with" off-price, the brands and athletic brands over specialty retailers and department stores. Trussell expects beats from Burlington Stores (BURL), Ross Stores (ROST), TJX (TJX), PVH (PVH), Foot Locker (FL) and Lululemon (LULU), along with American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) and Buckle (BKE) as the outliers in the specialty group and Kohl's (KSS), and says he is "a bit more cautious" for the frest of his apparel coverage given stretched valuations. Trussell raised his price target for Burlington Stores to $175 from $167, to $96 from $91 for Ross and to $105 from $100 fro TJX, but cut his price target to $171 from $176 for PVH.

MKM Partners refutes bear thesis on Ciena following competitor downgrade
MKM Partners analyst Michael Genovese said a competitor downgrade of Ciena (CIEN) makes "a strong, [but] incorrect, bear argument," stating that his own very recent senior management meetings and field checks lead him to believe that the company's Tier 1 U.S. Telco/Cable MSO business is on "solid footing" for the second half of the year. Genovese thinks Ciena's sales to AT&T (T) should be a bit better in the second half of the year than they were in the first half and he sees no evidence of any unusual price concessions at Verizon (VZ). Genovese maintains a Buy rating and $32 price target on Ciena shares, which are down 2.5% to $26.28 in midday trading.

Positives of Infinera deal 'meaningfully' outweigh risks, says William Blair
William Blair analyst Dmitry Netis believes the positives of Infinera's (INFN) acquisition of Coriant "meaningfully" outweigh the risks. If nothing else, the deal takes out a "nonsensical price disrupter from the market," Netis tells investors in a research note. The deal could be also very accretive, if management can execute, which is "no slam dunk," the analyst adds. His first cut pro forma model yields pro forma earnings per share of 78c by 2020 and $1.25 by 2021. Using a 15 times multiple on $1.25 in EPS in 2021, discounted back three years at 15%, yields a fair value of Infinera shares in the low- to mid-teens, Netis writes. He keeps an Outperform rating on Infinera. He also believes Ciena (CIEN) will trade up on the news while Acacia Communications (ACIA) may be pressured given customer consolidation, potential for greater discounting through longer-term price contracts, and risks of vertical integration by Infinera.

Dentsply Sirona and Patterson Companies guidance at risk, says Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Robert Jones kept his Sell rating on Dentsply Sirona (XRAY) and Patterson Companies (PDCO) while lowering his price target on the former to $43 from $45 and keeping that of the latter at $21. Jones says his Q2 dental survey indicates a "modest softening in consumable purchases and a slightly greater slowdown in equipment spending" reported by U.S. dentists, which puts the guidance of those companies at risk. The survey also revealed that the outlook for dental specialties lik implants and ortho is still more robust, suggesting a mid-single-digit implant market growth rate. The analyst is also positive on Align Technology (ALGN), keeping its Buy rating and raising its price target to $440 from $344 amid the "strong worldwide growth in 'Invisalign' search data" and the continued rollout of iTero in China.

Additionally, modest organic growth continued into Q2, suggesting that the headwind from the loss of exclusivity with Patterson has not been offset as anticipated by Dentsply's new relationship with Henry Schein (HSIC), Beuchaw tells investors. Second half guidance confirms channel positioning remains a headwind, while the company's guidance cut reflects inventory pressures re-accelerating from both Patterson and Henry Schein, added the analyst, who cut his price target on Dentsply shares to $40 from $54.
