On The Fly: Top five weekend stock stories

Catch up on the weekend's top five stories with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. CBS' (CBS) board of directors is near completion of a settlement that would end its litigation with its controlling shareholder National Amusements and sever ties with long time CEO Leslie Moonves, according to CNBC, citing people familiar with the matter. The talks are described as fluid, but the parties hope to complete a settlement prior to the start of trading on Monday morning, the publication added. Meanwhile, The New Reporter said that six more women have accused CBS's Moonves of sexual harassment and assault. 2. Over the weekend, President Donald Trump told Apple (AAPL) to make its products in the U.S. if the company wants to avoid China tariffs. In a tweet, the President said: "Apple prices may increase because of the massive Tariffs we may be imposing on China - but there is an easy solution where there would be ZERO tax, and indeed a tax incentive. Make your products in the United States instead of China. Start building new plants now. Exciting! #MAGA." In a separate tweet, Trump added: "Ford [F] has abruptly killed a plan to sell a Chinese-made small vehicle in the U.S. because of the prospect of higher U.S. Tariffs." CNBC. This is just the beginning. This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A. and Ford will pay no tariffs!" 3. Viacom's (VIAB) chief Robert Bakish is working to put television assets to better use in the era of streaming, reverse a years-long string of movie-making flops, and win a higher value for the company's depressed shares, Jack Hough wrote in this week's edition of Barron's. Bakish's moves are worth watching, he contended, adding that if CBS Leslie Moonves is out and there remains a chance that the two companies will recombine, Bakish might end up running the whole shebang. Regardless, the more immediate reason to give Viacom a look is the potential upside in its shares, the publication noted. 4. AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros' "The Nun" kicked off the fall box office with $53.5M from 3,876 theaters to score the second-biggest September debut of all time in North America, not adjusted for inflation. The spinoff also delivered big numbers overseas, earning $77.5M from 60 markets for a global start of $131M. "The Nun" earned a C CinemaScore and sports a 28% Rotten Tomatoes score. 5. Camping World (CWH) and Box (BOX) saw positive mentions in Barron's.

CBS digital initiatives becoming clearer, says BMO Capital
BMO Capital analyst Daniel Salmon kept his Outperform rating and $65 price target on CBS after his investor meeting with the company's CEO and CFO last week. Salmon says that while his estimates are also unchanged, the discussions added to his visibility around the company's digital initiatives. Specifically, the analyst notes the "multiple drivers underpinning the increase of CBS's DTC subscriber targets, the robust incremental international opportunity for All Access, and a solid advertising growth rooted in premium content".

CBS worth 'at least $60 per share even without CEO Moonves', says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Alan Gould keeps his Buy rating and $60 price target on CBS (CBS), saying the stock is worth at least that in spite of the press speculation surrounding the board's efforts to replace CEO Les Moonves. The analyst believes that most top executives will stay with the company if Dick Parsons is named Chairman and Joe Ianniello as interim CEO. Gould adds that CBS can earn $6 per share as a stand-alone company and grow earnings at mid-teen rate by expanding its OTT business. The analyst also notes that the stock could be worth "at least in mid-$70's" if a company other than Viacom (VIAB) sought to merge with CBS.

CBS agenda put in place by Moonves likely to continue, says Imperial Capital
The likely appointment of Chief Operating Office Joe Ianiello as interim CEO following the departure of Les Mooves, as reported yesterday by CNBC and others, implies that the strategic agenda put in place by Moonves over the past five years will probably continue, Imperial Capital analyst David Miller tells investors in a research note. He notes that if CBS issued $100M in stock from its treasury for Mooves' reported exit package, it would equate to an increase in the diluted share count of 1.92M shares. In theory, though, CBS could simply increase the pace of its buyback in order to counter the dilution, Miller points out. He keeps an Outperform rating on CBS with a $71 price target.

CBS/NAI settlement would likely be slight negative for Viacom, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Andy Hargreaves notes that several news outlets are reporting that CBS (CBS) and National Amusements are in settlement discussions that would, if completed, end the current litigation and end National Amusements' push to re-merge CBS with Viacom (VIAB) for a period of time. Although details are likely to be critical, the analyst would view this basic outline as a slight positive for CBS and a slight negative for Viacom. Absent a re-merger with CBS, Hargreaves believes a breakup and asset disposal would be the best path to maximize value at Viacom, which National Amusements has shown no interest in to date.

The analyst notes that even as the company continues to plan to ramp up its 3D sensing revenue, the management has acknowledged that its outlook is based on the qualification with its largest 3D sensing customer Apple (AAPL). Kisner further cites the "tough competitive environment in datacom optics and execution risk around 3D sensing".

Apple price target raised to $240 from $200 at Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall outlined his expectations for Apple's new product event on September 12, stating that he expects three new iPhones at better price points. He estimates the "iPhone 9" will price at $849, and while he sees some flexibility down to $800, Hall contends that a $699 price point would make little sense for Apple and drive FY19 EPS that would miss consensus. He also expects Apple to announce two new AppleCare+ Plans associated with the iPhone 9 and the Xs+ and raised his Services forecast to account for an overall mix of AppleCare+ skewed towards higher priced plans. Hall raised his price target on Apple shares to $240 but maintains a Neutral rating on the stock.

The analyst notes that a settlement is a "high probability event" going into the 5G connectivity cycle, adding that the company has also been "actively" pursuing settlement of disputes with Samsung (SSNLF) and Huawei. Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. BOFA DOUBLE UPGRADES AK STEEL: BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Timna Tanners double upgraded AK Steel (AKS) to Buy from Underperform and raised its price target to $6 from $5. Tanners is now modeling 2019 spot benchmark hot rolled coil at $750/short ton versus $700 previously and expects 85% of AK Steel's sheet business that is on fixed-price contracts will have a substantial increase in 2019. In mid-morning trading, AK Steel is up 2%. MACQUARIE CUTS WELLS FARGO TO NEUTRAL: Macquarie analyst David Konrad downgraded Wells Fargo (WFC) to Neutral from Buy with a $63 price target based on valuation and near-term estimates falling below expectations. Konrad said valuation has moved in-line relative to peers following favorable expense guidance and the strong CCAR results, and believes it will take a few more quarters before leverage drives higher earnings. SUSQUEHANNA INITIATES BAIDU, JD.COM: Susquehanna analyst Shyam Patil initiated Baidu (BIDU) with a Positive rating and $325 price target, saying its a 20%+ grower with upside to estimates and the multiple with little downside risk. Patil said the company has several initiatives underway that will drive upside over the near-to-intermediate-term with longer-term AI projects that represent call options. Patil also initiated JD.com (JD) with a Neutral rating and $30 price target, saying he is concerned Alibaba (BABA) will continue to be an e-commerce category killer in China and will remain aggressive in its efforts to take share from JD. GOLDMAN RAISES APPLE TARGET TO $240: Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall outlined his expectations for Apple's (AAPL) new product event on September 12, stating that he expects three new iPhones at better price points. He also expects Apple to announce two new AppleCare+ Plans associated with the iPhone 9 and the Xs+ and raised his Services forecast to account for an overall mix of AppleCare+ skewed towards higher priced plans. Hall raised his price target on Apple shares to $240, but maintained a Neutral rating on the stock. BOFA DEFENDS MICRON: BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Simon Woo kept his Buy rating and $100 price target on Micron (MU), saying the fundamentals of the company's earnings remain solid, and the recent correction in the stock price is likely "sentiment related". The analyst notes that the company is still headed for "record-high revenue/profit," and the stalled rise in memory chip prices does not signal a market downturn.

General Motors outperforming Ford in China, says Piper Jaffray
While both would suffer in a trade war, it is clear that General Motors (GM) is outperforming Ford (F) in China, Piper Jaffray analyst Alexander Potter tells investors in a research note. The analyst views GM's China business as stable, with a growing presence in luxury. He thinks Cadillac represented 16.7% of GM's Q2 revenue in China, versus 13.6% in 2017, which should boost margins. Until its "new product blitz gains momentum, Ford's China business will likely continue bleeding," Potter contends. He notes the company's Ford's retail sales in China declined by 38% year-over-year in June. The analyst keeps an Overweight rating on GM and a Neutral rating on Ford.

BOFA CUTS YUM CHINA TO UNDERPERFORM: BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Chen Luo downgraded Yum China (YUMC) to Underperform from Neutral and cut its price target to $34 from $44.30. Luo said he expects Yum China to continue to underperform given a likely peak in KFC trends amid China's weakening macro environment, a likely prolonged turnaround at Pizza Hut combined with heavy costs, a slowdown in Chinese consumer consumption, and RMB depreciation. Yum China is down 4.8% in late morning trading. CREDIT SUISSE CUTS FIVE BELOW TO NEUTRAL: Credit Suisse analyst Judah Frommer downgraded Five Below (FIVE) to Neutral from Outperform, telling investors that he is moving to the sidelines as he sees risk/reward balanced at current levels given the stock's material outperformance and back-half comp acceleration that he believes is priced into shares. Frommer keeps his $110 price target and says Five Below remains one of the most differentiated concepts in retail. Five Below is down 4.4% in late morning trading. BAIRD MORE CAUTIOUS ON DRUG SUPPLY CHAIN: Baird analyst Eric Coldwell downgraded Express Scripts (ESRX), AmerisourceBergen (ABC), and McKesson (MCK), all to Neutral from Outperform, citing the heavy political attack in recent weeks against pharmacy benefit managers and members of the drug supply chain. Among them, he said AmerisourceBergen remains his preferred name, but he cannot justify putting new money to work in these names in the current environment. SUNTRUST STARTS VIKING WITH A BUY: SunTrust analyst Edward Nash initiated Viking Therapeutics (VKTX) with a Buy rating and a price target of $14, saying its VK2809 drug for lipid disorders "has the potential to become a promising treatment by addressing multiple metabolic issues" associated with the non-alcoholic steatohepatitis disease, or NASH. Viking is up 8.3% in late morning trading. JPMORGAN SAYS BUY GM, SELL TESLA INTO EARNINGS: JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman forecast lower than consensus Q2 earnings for Ford (F) and higher than consensus earnings for General Motors (GM). The analyst is also concerned about the potential for a "large loss and accompanying large cash outflow" at Tesla (TSLA) in Q2 to "make the bridge" to GAAP profitability and positive cash generation in the second half of the year. Brinkman maintained Overweight ratings on GM and Ford, with a preference for GM shares. He also kept his cautious Underweight rating on Tesla shares, seeing 44% downside to his $180 December 2018 price target.

Ford risks high, but so is potential reward, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas believes Ford announcing plans to spend $11B on restructuring and then canceling its investor day may have may have the unintended consequence of raising expectations for a "big bang" of action. While acknowledging the wide range of potential outcomes, Jonas has an estimate for how Ford could recognize its planned $11B in restructuring charges over a 3-5 year period to achieve annual cost reductions of about $4B, giving it a payback period of just under 3 years that would "usually [be] a very good use of capital" by automotive standards, he tells investors. Jonas maintains an Overweight rating on Ford with a $15 price target, contending that the "risks are high, but so is the potential reward."

Imperial keeps Underperform rating on Viacom with $25 target
Viacom (VIAB) in Q3 missed on revenue due to a 3% decline in domestic affiliate fees and 3% decline in U.S. advertising, but earnings beat on "very nice cost containment," Imperial Capital analyst David Miller tells investors in a research note. The analyst keeps an Underperform rating on the shares with a $25 price target. The analyst has a "tough time" applying anything north of a 6.0 times enterprise value to EBITDA multiple on fiscal 2019, which a implies $25 per share, given Viacom's lack of appointment programming, lack of sports, and lack of any franchise presence in film with the exception of Mission Impossible and Transformers. Miller admits, though, that an acquisition of Viacom by CBS (CBS) could prove his call wrong.

CBS fundamentals are 'clearly not the issue,' says JPMorgan
Fundamentals are "clearly not the issue" for CBS (CBS) shares as the company continues to deliver or exceed expectations on comp growth, content sales, and over-the-top offerings, JPMorgan analyst Alexia Quadrani tells investors in a post-earnings research note titled "Another Beat and Favorable Outlook But That is Not the Near-Term Story." Unfortunately, the near term focus will remain on potential management changes, a court battle to determine who really controls the strategic direction of the company and how well CBS is positioned longer-term as a standalone or combined with Viacom (VIAB), the analyst adds. As such, the analyst sees CBS shares as range-bound in the near-term. However, over the longer-term, Quadrani believes "it is hard to ignore the obvious disconnect between valuation and the ongoing healthy earnings growth profile for the next few years." She reiterates an Overweight rating on CBS with a $75 price target.

Fly Intel: Today's top analyst calls on Wall Street
Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. BOFA CUTS ZILLOW TO NEUTRAL: BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Nat Schindler downgraded Zillow (Z, ZG) to Neutral from Buy and cut its price target to $60 from $70 following the Q2 report and reduction in guidance. Schindler said the quarter indicated Zillow is taking longer than expected to ramp up the Homes business, Rentals revenue missed and the outlook was cut, and other revenue also missed, indicating the new construction opportunity is also taking longer to materialize. Zillow Class A shares are down about 17% in late morning trading. MORGAN STANLEY SAYS WAYMO COULD BE WORTH $175B: Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak increased his enterprise value estimate for Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Waymo unit from $75B for ride sharing only to $175B given his analyses for two other emerging business models, logistics and licensing. He believes Waymo remains on track to launch an autonomous ride hailing service in Phoenix this year and believes this business could be worth about $80B over the long-term. Given his view of Waymo being a key part of Alphabet's long-term value, Nowak raised his sum of the parts valuation to $1,550 from $1,400. He has an Overweight rating and $1,325 price target on Alphabet shares. GOLDMAN RAISES NVIDIA TARGET AHEAD OF EARNINGS: Goldman Sachs analyst Toshiya Hari raised his price target for Nvidia (NVDA) to $324 from $310 ahead of quarterly results. Unlike the past 10 quarters where the company handily beat Street estimates and raised guidance, the analyst expects a "noisy" quarter with the focal points being the upcoming product transition in Gaming, the current product transition in Datacenter, weakness in cryptocurrency mining, and potential disruption from the virus attack at TSMC (TSM). That said, Hari noted that his long-term bull thesis on Nvidia remains intact and reiterated a Buy rating on the shares. ARGUS CUTS CBS TO HOLD: Argus analyst Joseph Bonner downgraded CBS (CBS) to Hold from Buy, noting significant downside risks for the company from both the sexual harassment allegations against CEO Moonves and the board's attempts to prevent the Viacom (VIA, VIAB) merger. Bonner noted that if the Moonves allegations are proven true, he would be immediately dismissed, which could end the board's bid to remain independent and thereby inflict damage on the shareholders.

The analyst likes Verizon's near- and mid-term prospects, but believes the stock's valuation will cap upside potential from present levels. Venkateshwar likes T-Mobile (TMUS) "relatively more at this point despite growth second derivatives slowing, given that the valuation already reflects this to some extent." Further, if the Sprint (S) deal does not go through, T-Mobile could become an attractive partner for one of the cable providers, which should provide downside protection, the analyst tells investors in a research note. He keeps an Overweight rating on the shares. Venkateshwar also lowered his price target for AT&T (T) to $31 from $40 and keeps an Equal Weight rating on the name.

The analyst expects investors to focus on GameStop's comps, title release slate for the second half of 2018, any update on its CEO search, and negotiations with financial sponsors and AT&T (T). His new $32 price target implies an unchanged revenue multiple applied to his newly introduced CY2020 revenue estimate. McDowell maintains an Outperform rating on Box shares.
