Fly Intel: Top five weekend stock stories

Catch up on the weekend's top five stories with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. On Saturday, The Wall Street Journal reported that President Trump plans to announce new tariffs of about $200B on Chinese imports, but at a rate of about 10%, which is below the 25% that has previously been threatened. On Sunday, The Journal said that China is not pleased with the pressure tactics and is considering declining an offer for a new round of trade talks. Furthermore, some Chinese advisors are suggesting restrictions be placed on sales of materials and equipment key to U.S. manufacturers' supply chains, which could even apply to Apple's (AAPL) iPhone, according to The Journal. 2. Amazon (AMZN) is investigating internal leaks as it fends off fake reviews and other seller scams, The Wall Street Journal reported. The practice of employees offering internal data and other confidential information that can help independent merchants sell their products on the site is particularly pronounced in China, sources told the paper. 3. A fire broke out at Tesla's (TSLA) Gigafactory in Nevada late on Saturday but was contained by early Sunday and production had resumed, Reuters reported, citing emergency officials and the company. The factory produces Model 3 electric motors and battery packs. 4. After Friday's close, Quantum (QTM) announced that the special committee of its board of directors has substantially completed its internal investigation and concluded that there were misstatements in the company's previously issued consolidated financial statements and other financial information. The board has concluded that the company's previously issued consolidated financial statements and other financial data for the fiscal years ended March 31, 2015, 2016 and 2017 should no longer be relied upon and should be restated. 5. ObsEva (OBSV) and Summit Materials (SUM) saw positive mentions in Barron's.

Fly Intel: Today's top analyst calls on Wall Street
Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. TESLA, CBS DOWNGRADED ON MANAGEMENT CONCERNS: Nomura Instinet analyst Romit Shah downgraded Tesla (TSLA) to Neutral from Buy and cut his price target for the shares to $300 from $400. Shah expressed concern that the "erratic behavior" of CEO Elon Musk will taint the Tesla brand. Shah, who admits to being one of the most bullish analysts on Wall Street since initiating the stock in October of 2017, still believes Tesla could grow to be a much larger company. The analyst, however, prefers to move to the sidelines pending potential changes in management. UBS analyst John Hodulik downgraded CBS Corporation (CBS) to Neutral from Buy and lowered his price target for the shares to $60 from $72. Uncertainty around the management transition limits upside in the shares and could last for an extended period, Hodulik said. The analyst said that while interim CEO Joseph Ianniello has a strong track record as COO, he does not expect him to be appointed as the permanent replacement since controlling shareholder National Amusements noted in court filings that it does not see him as a potential successor to Les Moonves. In late morning trading, Tesla is down 3.6%, while CBS is down almost 1%. CANACCORD UPGRADES NIKE TO BUY: Canaccord analyst Camilo Lyon upgraded Nike (NKE) to Buy from Hold. The analyst believes Nike has regained its footing and is marching back to form following two years of a soft product cycle, margin compression, and market share declines. He cited newly introduced platforms coupled with forthcoming innovations as catalysts to sustain earnings growth. Lyon raised his price target to $95 from $78 on Nike shares. ROSENBLATT BOOSTS AMD PRICE TARGET: Rosenblatt analyst Hans Mosesmann raised Buy rated AMD's price target to $40 from $30 citing a faster ramp in 7nm GPU compute. Mosesmann said AMD's move over the past several quarters reminds him of the setup Nvidia (NVDA) experienced almost three years ago when it transformed from a PC graphics play to a "compute powerhouse." GOLDMAN UPGRADES DARDEN, CUTS WINGSTOP: Goldman Sachs analyst Karen Holthouse did a ratings restack in Americas Restaurants, which included upgrading Darden Restaurants (DRI) to Buy from Neutral, upgrading Bloomin' Brands (BLMN) to Neutral from Sell, and downgrading Wingstop (WING) to Sell from Neutral.

Tesla Model 3 demand issues could create 'scary' Q4, says Vertical Group
Vertical Group analyst Gordon Johnson said his analysis suggests Tesla will exhaust its backlog of more expensive all-wheel-drive and performance Model 3s by October and will need to then either ramp down production, start shipping a lot of cars to Europe and the rest of the world or start selling the "long-awaited" $35,000 model. In any of those cases, he sees a likely "scary" outcome for Tesla in Q4, arguing that "everyone is focused on supply, but we feel demand is going to potentially push [the company] into crisis." Johnson reiterates a Sell rating on shares of Tesla with an $88 price target.

Tesla (TSLA) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Nomura Instinet with analyst Romit Shah expressing concern that the "erratic behavior" of CEO Elon Musk will taint the Tesla brand. 3. Johnson Controls (JCI) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at UBS with analyst Steven Winoker saying while the company's Buildings business is improving in 2018, the pace and magnitude of the progress is proving slower and lower than expectations. 4. Wingstop (WING) downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Goldman Sachs with analyst Karen Holthouse saying she continues to view the company's comps and unit growth fundamentals favorably but she recommends taking profits at current share levels. 5. AAR Corp. (AIR) downgraded to Hold from Buy at SunTrust with analyst Michael Ciarmoli saying he is maintaining a bullish view on the aero aftermarket with an opportunity for AAR Corp to exploit its position while also reaping benefits from its INL Global Aviation Support Services contract, but he also believes that the company's near-term growth will come under pressure from its maintenance, repair, and overhaul, or MRO, segment. Tesla downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst Romit Shah downgraded Tesla to Neutral from Buy and cut his price target for the shares to $300 from $400. The electric carmaker closed yesterday up $22.26, or 8.5%, to $285.50. In a research note titled "No Longer Investable," Shah expresses concern that the "erratic behavior" of CEO Elon Musk will taint the Tesla brand. Consumers are fickle and could become scared about buying a Tesla if they believe the company might not be around long term, Shah tells investors in a research note. Shah, who admits to being one of the most bullish analysts on Wall Street since initiating the stock in October of 2017, still believes Tesla could grow to be a much larger company. The analyst, however, prefers to move to the sidelines pending potential changes in management.

Cirrus Logic's dongle removed from older iPhone models, says Barclays
Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis says his review of Apple's website reveals that Cirrus Logic's (CRUS) dongle is now removed from the entire suite of iPhones. Apple's (AAPL) website previously stated certain iPhones contained a "Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter" in the box, but this has since been removed under each phone, Curtis tells investors in a research note. He views the development as an additional negative for Cirrus Logic. While the company already admitted that the dongle was out in current iPhone generations, the removal from older products could bring another $35M of downside in 2018 and $25M in 2019. The analyst keeps an Underweight rating on Cirrus Logic shares. The stock in late morning trading is down 2% to $40.08.

Apple price target raised to $260 from $220 at Needham
Needham analyst Laura Martin raised her price target on Apple to $260 and kept her Buy rating after its product event yesterday, noting that the distinction of the new line-up comes with the earlier availability of the more expensive iPhones to help maximize revenues and boost average selling prices. The analyst also estimates the churn for the iPhone at about 4% per year, which implies a 3.5-year average life cycle and suggesting that new products are "driving ecosystem lock-in". Given the "low" churn, Martin contends that Apple's iPhone XR, priced at $750, offers more value than its price implies and serves as an eco-system "on-ramp". The analyst adds that the upgrade of the Apple Watch also "adds to average revenue per ecosystem user and stickiness".

Apple Watch more likely a positive for BioTelemetry, says Lake Street
After spending time with Joe Capper and Heather Getz, CEO and CFO of BioTelemetry (BEAT), Lake Street analyst Brooks O'Neil senses that Apple's (AAPL) Watch Series 4, which includes a built-in electrocardiogram, is more likely a positive for BioTelemetry "than a buzzer sounding a flat-line for the company's future." BioTelemetry remains the leading cardiac monitoring company and this is likely to continue for the foreseeable future, O'Neil tells investors in a research note. He points out the company has a partnership with Apple in cardiac monitoring and with Sanofi (SNY) and Alphabet (GOOG) in diabetes. The analyst's guesses that its partnership is one element giving BioTelemetry management comfort in evaluating the role Apple might play in the company's future. O'Neil reaffirms a Buy rating on the shares with a $90 price target.

JPMorgan downgrades Valvoline to Underweight on new competition from Amazon
JPMorgan analyst Jeffrey Zekauskas downgraded Valvoline (VVV) to Underweight from Neutral and lowered his price target for the shares to $20 from $22. Industry trade publication National Oil and Lube New is reporting that Amazon (AMZN) has launched its first private label motor oil called AmazonBasics Full Synthetic Motor Oil, Zekauskas tells investors in a research note. Further, the analyst points out that the product line is now being reviewed favorably by Amazon Vine Reviewers. Amazon's private label synthetic motor oil is supplied by Warren Distribution. While too early to gauge the effects of the Amazon entry on the Valvoline brand, the new competition from Amazon will likely reduce Valvoline's trading multiple "because the lubricant industry structure is probably weaker for its entry," Zekauskas contends.

Piper says Amazon, Facebook, Alphabet attractive despite regulatory pressure
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson believes shares of Amazon.com (AMZN), Facebook (FB) and Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) remain attractive despite increased regulatory pressure in the near-term. While current regulatory challenges present "multiple issues over the next few months," the long-term outlook remains favorable for all three companies, Olson tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes Facebook may be becoming less exposed from a regulatory perspective going forward given that the company "has now done extensive work to bring its platform in line with recent privacy regulations and because it is now giving the deserved attention to privacy." Between the three companies, Alphabet may face the most regulatory headwind given its open infrastructure marketing platform exposure on privacy and targeting, susceptibility to copyright changes through YouTube, and its dominant position in search amenable to antitrust issues, the analyst contends. However, he believes Google, YouTube, Android, and Gmail together "create a once-in-a-generation asset with continued strong revenue growth potential, high margins, and secular tailwinds." For Amazon, Olson sees the biggest worries as antitrust and Post Office changes. However, he thinks antitrust law precedent will be upheld and points out the company continues to build its own last-mile delivery to lessen its dependency on the United States Postal Service.

Fly Intel: Today's top analyst calls on Wall Street
Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. WELLS SAYS 'MAY BE AS GOOD AS IT GETS' FOR COSTCO: Wells Fargo analyst Edward Kelly downgraded Costco Wholesale to Market Perform from Outperform with an unchanged price target of $235. While Costco remains one of the highest quality companies within consumer and its near-term results should be positive, "this may be as good as it gets," Kelly told investors. He believes the stock's 50% rally over the past year "has left it priced for perfection" and that Costco's comps "seem destined to slow in 2019" as it laps tough comparisons. JPMORGAN ADVISE CAUTION ON GE: A read of the proxies for the General Electric (GE) and Wabtec (WAB) transportation deal suggests "caution is warranted" in taking the forecasts "to the bank," JPMorgan analyst Stephen Tusa wrote in a research note. The situation "looks eerily similar" to GE's Baker Hughes (BHGE) deal, where management went from pitching $8B in future EBITDA several years forward to "slowly pulling annual guidance once public," with a consensus that is now at $5B, Tusa said. He believes that as each of GE's Industrial businesses get broken out clearly with "clean GAAP" transparency, the less impressive the financials look. Tusa keeps an Underweight rating on General Electric shares. CORNING UPGRADED ON OPTICAL DEMAND STRENGTH: Citi analyst Asiya Merchant upgraded Corning (GLW) to Buy from Neutral with a $40 price target, telling investors that the shares are "poised to continue to grind higher" in the next 12-18 months. The analyst expects Corning's earnings and margins growth will be driving by optical demand strength and better display pricing. JPMORGAN CUTS VALVOLINE TO UNDERWEIGHT ON NEW AMAZON COMPETITION: JPMorgan analyst Jeffrey Zekauskas downgraded Valvoline (VVV) to Underweight from Neutral and lowered his price target for the shares to $20 from $22. Industry trade publication National Oil and Lube New is reporting that Amazon (AMZN) has launched its first private label motor oil called AmazonBasics Full Synthetic Motor Oil, Zekauskas noted. While too early to gauge the effects of the Amazon entry on the Valvoline brand, the new competition from Amazon will likely reduce Valvoline's trading multiple "because the lubricant industry structure is probably weaker for its entry," Zekauskas contends. NVIDIA TARGET HIKED TO $350: Needham analyst Rajvindra Gill raised his price target on Nvidia to $350 from $325 after his investor meeting with its Data Center GM and Director of IR, saying the discussions about the company's AI/ML dominance reminded him of "Wintel" platform during the PC computing era. The analyst believes that Nvidia is "uniquely positioned" to capitalize on the next wave of computing, taking a larger inference market share with its new TensorRT Hyperscaler Platform.

H.C. Wainwright analyst Raghuram Selvaraju believes AbbVie's (ABBV) long-term safety extension study of elagolix in women with uterine fibroids reduces risk for ObsEva (OBSV). The long-term efficacy for elagolix should bode well for future development of ObsEva's linzagolix in uterine fibroids, since both drugs are gonadotropin-releasing hormone receptor antagonists and have thus far shown comparable potency in clinical studies, Selvaraju tells investors in a research note. The analyst reiterates a Buy rating on ObsEva with a $44 price target.

Summit Materials investor deck points to lowered outlook, says Deutsche Bank
Summit Materials didn't explicitly lower fiscal 2018 guidance with its new investor slide deck, but everything the company disclosed points in that direction, Deutsche Bank analyst Nishu Sood tells investors in a research note. The new deck, released just three weeks after the last one, describes poor weather across one-third of its operations, continued competitive pressures in the cement business and even higher asking multiples on transactions, Sood points out. The analyst lowered his fiscal 2018 EBITDA estimate to $465M from $470M and sees added risk to second half of 2018 numbers. However, Sood keeps a Buy rating on Summit Materials with a $30 price target, citing the stock's "significant valuation discount to peers."
