JPMorgan cuts estimates for Facebook, drops price target to $195

JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth lowered his 2019 and 2020 earnings estimates for Facebook (FB) by 5%-6% on the company's bigger investment increases over the next couple years, which he does not believe are fully captured in consensus estimates. The analyst says Facebook remains the most controversial company in his Internet coverage universe. The company is in transition as it pushes Stories more prominently on the core platform and rolls out stronger privacy tools for users. Even with Facebook suggesting it could reach mid-30%'s operating margins in a few or several years, investments in 2019 could be larger than anticipated in consensus estimates, Anmuth tells investors in a research note. The analyst also cut his price target for the shares to $195 from $205. However, he keeps an Overweight rating on the shares. Anmuth's top overall Internet picks are Amazon.com (AMZN), Twitter (TWTR) and Yelp (YELP.)

Cleveland Research lowers Facebook Q3 sales growth estimate
Cleveland Research analyst Chandler Converse said feedback on near-term Facebook ad spending has turned more cautious as a result of changes to limit targeting and tracking in response to increased scrutiny and regulation. The targeting and tracking changes are viewed as driving lower ROI for some advertisers, leading to reduced budget allocation, while Facebook also appears to be seeing increased competitive pressure from Google (GOOGL) and Amazon (AMZN), Converse tells investors. The analyst lowered his Q3 sales growth forecast to about 33% from a prior view of 35%, though he maintains a Buy rating on Facebook shares.

Piper says Amazon, Facebook, Alphabet attractive despite regulatory pressure
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson believes shares of Amazon.com (AMZN), Facebook (FB) and Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) remain attractive despite increased regulatory pressure in the near-term. While current regulatory challenges present "multiple issues over the next few months," the long-term outlook remains favorable for all three companies, Olson tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes Facebook may be becoming less exposed from a regulatory perspective going forward given that the company "has now done extensive work to bring its platform in line with recent privacy regulations and because it is now giving the deserved attention to privacy." Between the three companies, Alphabet may face the most regulatory headwind given its open infrastructure marketing platform exposure on privacy and targeting, susceptibility to copyright changes through YouTube, and its dominant position in search amenable to antitrust issues, the analyst contends. However, he believes Google, YouTube, Android, and Gmail together "create a once-in-a-generation asset with continued strong revenue growth potential, high margins, and secular tailwinds." For Amazon, Olson sees the biggest worries as antitrust and Post Office changes. However, he thinks antitrust law precedent will be upheld and points out the company continues to build its own last-mile delivery to lessen its dependency on the United States Postal Service.

Equal Weight
Weight Watchers initiated with an Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Vincent Sinisi started Weight Watchers (WTW) with an Equal Weight rating and $76 price target. He believes its improved digital offering and rebranding can help its turnaround continue in the near-term, but also sees other social offerings, such as Facebook (FB), holding back the weight loss company's ability to further ramp its online subscriber growth. Sinisi, who sees further improvements in Weight Watchers' digital offering and retention as keys to its upside, forecasts a compound annual subscriber growth rate of 17% from 2017 through 2020.

Amazon should split Retail and Web Services units, says Citi
Amazon.com is expected to announce the location of its second headquarters by the end of 2018, but the more impactful announcement from the company over the coming years could be the separation of its Retail and Web Services businesses, Citi analyst Mark May tells investors in a research note. Several factors indicate that the separation of the AWS and Retail businesses makes increasing sense, and is worth investor consideration as a potential milestone event over the next one-to-three years, May contends. He believes Amazon's second headquarters could be intended to prepare for a spin-off and highlights CEO Jeff Bezos' recent comments about the "increased drumbeat for greater regulatory scrutiny." May thinks there are other benefits of separating these two divisions and that those benefits outweigh the reasons for not pursuing a separation.

Fly Intel: Today's top analyst calls on Wall Street
Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. WELLS SAYS 'MAY BE AS GOOD AS IT GETS' FOR COSTCO: Wells Fargo analyst Edward Kelly downgraded Costco Wholesale to Market Perform from Outperform with an unchanged price target of $235. While Costco remains one of the highest quality companies within consumer and its near-term results should be positive, "this may be as good as it gets," Kelly told investors. He believes the stock's 50% rally over the past year "has left it priced for perfection" and that Costco's comps "seem destined to slow in 2019" as it laps tough comparisons. JPMORGAN ADVISE CAUTION ON GE: A read of the proxies for the General Electric (GE) and Wabtec (WAB) transportation deal suggests "caution is warranted" in taking the forecasts "to the bank," JPMorgan analyst Stephen Tusa wrote in a research note. The situation "looks eerily similar" to GE's Baker Hughes (BHGE) deal, where management went from pitching $8B in future EBITDA several years forward to "slowly pulling annual guidance once public," with a consensus that is now at $5B, Tusa said. He believes that as each of GE's Industrial businesses get broken out clearly with "clean GAAP" transparency, the less impressive the financials look. Tusa keeps an Underweight rating on General Electric shares. CORNING UPGRADED ON OPTICAL DEMAND STRENGTH: Citi analyst Asiya Merchant upgraded Corning (GLW) to Buy from Neutral with a $40 price target, telling investors that the shares are "poised to continue to grind higher" in the next 12-18 months. The analyst expects Corning's earnings and margins growth will be driving by optical demand strength and better display pricing. JPMORGAN CUTS VALVOLINE TO UNDERWEIGHT ON NEW AMAZON COMPETITION: JPMorgan analyst Jeffrey Zekauskas downgraded Valvoline (VVV) to Underweight from Neutral and lowered his price target for the shares to $20 from $22. Industry trade publication National Oil and Lube New is reporting that Amazon (AMZN) has launched its first private label motor oil called AmazonBasics Full Synthetic Motor Oil, Zekauskas noted. While too early to gauge the effects of the Amazon entry on the Valvoline brand, the new competition from Amazon will likely reduce Valvoline's trading multiple "because the lubricant industry structure is probably weaker for its entry," Zekauskas contends. NVIDIA TARGET HIKED TO $350: Needham analyst Rajvindra Gill raised his price target on Nvidia to $350 from $325 after his investor meeting with its Data Center GM and Director of IR, saying the discussions about the company's AI/ML dominance reminded him of "Wintel" platform during the PC computing era. The analyst believes that Nvidia is "uniquely positioned" to capitalize on the next wave of computing, taking a larger inference market share with its new TensorRT Hyperscaler Platform.

Etsy selloff on Amazon Storefront a buying opportunity, says Roth Capital
Roth Capital analyst Darren Aftahi is a buyer of Etsy (ETSY) on weakness from Amazon's (AMZN) expansion in the small and midsize business space via its Storefront offering. The stock closed yesterday down 5%, or $2.75, to $50.10. Amazon has already been present in the space with Handmade, a direct competitor to Etsy, for several years, which has not presented the risk that bears on the stock had thought, Aftahi tells investors in a research note. As such, he believes Amazon's announcement of Storefront represents more of a headline versus fundamental risk to Etsy's story. The analyst keeps a Buy rating on Etsy shares with a $52 price target.

Twitter true underlying cost growth higher than reported, says MoffettNathanson
MoffettNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson said Twitter's reported operating expense growth has "been amazingly low" in the first two quarters of this year, at 0% and 3%, respectively. However, he would argue that true underlying cost growth has actually been materially higher, in the range of 13%-15%. He also believes expenses are poised to escalate into the back-half of the year and in 2019 given "Twitter's dire need to improve platform safety and invest in more video content." Consensus margin expectations will likely need to be revised down in 2019, contends Nathanson, who reiterated his Sell rating on Twitter and lowered his price target to $21 from $23.

Apple price target raised to $245 from $232 at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty raised her price target on Apple (AAPL) shares to $245 from $232 to reflect recent multiple expansion at Services peers, namely Netflix (NFLX), Twitter (TWTR) and Amazon (AMZN). It had been long rumored that Apple would acquire a media studio to jump-start its original video content efforts, but it now seems that Apple is more focused on building these efforts in-house, said Huberty, who estimates the incremental video opportunity can potentially be worth $20 per Apple share. While she awaits more clarity on how Apple plans to price and distribute its video content, Huberty believes that Apple Video will "become a reality sooner than investors think," she tells investors. She maintains an Overweight rating on Apple shares.

Snap price target lowered to $11 from $14 at Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Brent Thill lowered his price target for Snap to $11 and keeps a Hold rating on the shares. Based on third-party data analysis of Android usage, Snap's daily active users and time spent are both trending down in Q3 in the U.S., U.K., Spain, France, Germany, and Australia, Thill tells investors in a research note. While advertiser sentiment is neutral to positive, reach is capped due to declining users, the analyst contends. He lowered his 2019 revenue and EBITDA estimates to reflect greater uncertainty around users and continues to prefer shares of Facebook (FB) and Twitter (TWTR) over Snap.

Wedbush adds D.R. Horton, GrubHub, Sallie Mae, Yelp to Best Ideas List
Wedbush analysts led by Jesse Bigelow added D.R. Horton (DHI), GrubHub (GRUB), Sallie Mae (SLM) and Yelp (YELP) to their firm's Best Ideas List. On D.R. Horton, the analysts note the company has expanded its product lines into the luxury Emerald line, the entry-level Express brand, and active-adult brand Freedom Homes, while maintaining a core focus on entry-level to move-up housing. On GrubHub, they see a $13B company dominating a $250B market "that is barely penetrated today." On Sallie Mae, the analysts believe the company will continue to build market share in the undergraduate student loan arena. And on Yelp, the analysts believe the business model changes being implemented will help accelerate growth, which is not reflected in investor sentiment or the stock's valuation.

Yelp price target raised to $62 from $53 at RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Mark Mahaney raised his price target on Yelp to $62, saying his latest proprietary survey findings suggest that only 30% of U.S. small businesses have adopted the platform for advertising, even though the future spending intentions by advertisers are positive. The analyst also notes that the survey found 70% of those who use the platform as being "very helpful". Mahaney adds that Yelp's "Request a Quote" opportunity offers a "strong value proposition, very good momentum, and the ability to materially impact" its profitability over time. The analyst keeps his Outperform rating on Yelp.

Wedbush analyst Ygal Arounian initiated Yelp with an Outperform rating and $60 price target, telling investors in a research note that Yelp is one of his top picks across his coverage universe, as he believes the business model changes being implemented will help accelerate growth which is not reflected in investor sentiment or valuation. Arounian also says there continues to be mixed-to-negative sentiment on Yelp shares and the company's ability to follow through on its advertising changes, and believes the dismay comes from investors worrying over management's conservative guidance and "hesitation to fully commit" to confidence in the advertising contract changes. As previously announced, Yelp was also added to Wedbush's Best Ideas List.
