On The Fly: Top five analyst upgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. General Electric (GE) upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight at Barclays with analyst Julian Mitchell saying while he does not yet know the magnitude of the 2018 guidance cuts, his talks with investors suggest they are braced for earnings per share of 75c for 2018, free cash flow of 50c, and a dividend cut of 75%-plus. 2. Conagra Brands (CAG) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at UBS with analyst Steven Strycula saying Conagra at current share levels offers the best risk/reward in Food. 3. Willis Towers Watson (WLTW) upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Credit Suisse with analyst Michael Zaremski saying he has been puzzled by the stock weakness post what was admittedly a confusing Q2 EPS report, because peers have re-rated upwards. 4. CenterPoint Energy (CNP) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Wells Fargo with analyst Sarah Akers saying she is attracted to the company's post-merger outlook, and his sum of the parts valuation supports a 13%-14% total return proposition. 5. Petrobras (PBR) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Santander, to Buy from Neutral at BofA/Merrill, and to Overweight from Neutral at JPMorgan. Petrobras upgraded to Buy from Neutral at BofA/Merrill
BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Frank McGann upgraded Petrobras to Buy from Neutral citing the strong showing of Jair Bolsonaro in winning the presidential election's first round in Brazil. Although there is still significant energy policy uncertainty and limited clarity as to how the new government will deal with Petrobras, McGann sees Bolsonaro's victory lowering the perceived policy risk than had been priced into Petrobras's stock, he tells investors. He raised his price target on the ADRs to $20 from $17.

U.S. banks 'in very good shape,' says Oppenheimer, favorites include BofA, Citi
Oppenheimer analyst Chris Kotowski tells investors in a research note that the U.S. banking group is on solid footing with balance sheets less risky than at any time over the last 33 years the firm covered the group and says his favorite bank stocks are Outperform-rated Bank of America (BAC), Citi (C), CIT (CIT) and Goldman Sachs (GS). However, Kotowski notes that banks are trading at an average relative P/E of just ~66% relative to the S&P 500 and returning to a historical avg valuation of 73%-80% range would imply over a thousand basis points of outperformance by the group. In his view, the U.S. banks are, on the whole, in "very good" shape.

Citi to benefit from potential U.S.-Mexico trade deal, says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst Mike Mayo believes Citi could gain more than other large U.S. banks from a U.S.-Mexico trade deal given its ownership of the second largest bank in Mexico, Citibanamex. In his view, Citi's stock had been hurt on perceptions of the U.S. relationship with Mexico. At a minimum, any new trade deal could reflect the absence of a negative and, on the upside, new potential growth opportunities, he contends. Mayo reiterates an Outperform rating and $100 price target on the shares.

The analyst adds that while MasterCard has a higher valuation than PayPal (PYPL) and Visa (V) - a 10% relative EBITDA premium - it is justified and may even be too narrow given its superior growth sustainability and margin upside.

JPMorgan says buy Airline stocks with calendar 'on your side'
A strategy of buying airline stocks at any point in September or October and selling them randomly in April or May has outperformed the market, on average, over the past 11 years, JPMorgan analyst Jamie Baker tells investors in a research note titled "The calendar is on your side, it's time to buy." The analyst says that while the case for 2019 margin expansion is "sufficiently strong as to potentially propel equities further during Q4," there's "no question" that seasonal timing is also skewed in investors' favor for this month and next, based on past observations. Baker has Overweight ratings on Delta Air Lines (DAL), American Airlines (AAL), United Continental (UAL) and Spirit Airlines (SAVE).

Piper Jaffray analyst Jason Deleeuw raised his price target for Neutral-rated Square 9SQ) to $94 from $67 in a research previewing the Q3 earnings reports for his FinTech coverage universe. Key fundamental factors for the sector remain positive, including ongoing secular growth and macro cyclical strength, Deleeuw tells investors in a research note. Also, the group's fundamentals are relatively insulated from the key macro risks of rising input costs and tariff escalation, the analyst adds. As such, he expects in-line to better than consensus Q3 results and outlooks, which he thinks will help stabilize the relative valuation multiples for the group. Deleeuw's top ideas into the quarter include Black Knight (BKI), Global Payments (GPN), First Data (FDC), Visa (V), Euronet (EEFT) and Alliance Data (ADS). In addition to Square, the analyst boosted his price target for Overweight-rated Alliance Data to $319 from $312, Neutral-rated American Express (AXP) to $126 from $113, Overweight-rated Global Payments to $157 from $135, Overweight-rated MasterCard (MA) to $216 from $224, Neutral-rated PayPal (PYPL) to $96 from $81 and Overweight-rated Visa to $191 from $166.

PayPal recent selloff brings buying opportunity, says William Blair
William Blair analyst Robert Napoli says that while recent acquisitions and the sale of its credit business "could complicate near-term visibility, PayPal's (PYPL) fundamentals remain strong. The 13% drop in PayPal's share price from its highs, taking the valuation to 17 times 2019 EBITDA, brings an attractive entry point for long-term investors, Napoli tells investors in a research note. He believes the company's earnings should grow at a high-teens to 20% rate over the medium term. Ahead of September quarter results on October 18, Napoli lowered his 2020 earnings per share estimate for PayPal to $3.32 from $3.40 to account for the roll-off of the eBay (EBAY) processing business. He keeps an Outperform rating on the shares.

Boeing, Tesla, Nvidia make Morgan Stanley 'key man risk' list
Morgan Stanley equity strategist Mark Savino noted that about 12% of CEO jobs among S&P 500 companies turned over in 2017, noting that this was the highest level of CEO departures since before the financial crisis. The 59 stocks of S&P 500 companies that had CEOs depart in 2017 underperformed the market by 11% over the next 12 months, or since the departure for instances that were less than 12 months ago, noted Savino. In cooperation with the firm's U.S. analysts, Savino and his team identified the companies in each sector they believe face the greatest level of "key man risk," which includes: Boeing (BA), Tesla (TSLA), ADT Inc. (ADT), Moody's (MCO), TransUnion (TRU), Arista Networks (ANET), Church & Dwight (CHD), Coca-Cola (KO), Monster Beverage (MNST), Coupa Software (COUP), Salesforce (CRM), FireEye (FEYE), MongoDB (MDB), Microsoft (MSFT), New Relic (NEWR), XPO Logistics (XPO), Hilton (HLT), Las Vegas Sands (LVS), Best Buy (BBY), Ulta (ULTA), Aflac (AFL), Athene Holding (ATH), Lincoln National (LNC), Arthur J. Jefferies expects Akorn to remain independent, cuts price target to $6 from $34
Jefferies analyst David Steinberg lowered his price target for Akorn (AKRX) to $6 from $34 after Judge Laster ruled in favor of Fresenius (FSNUY), allowing the company to withdraw from its agreement to acquire Akorn. The generic drugmaker closed yesterday up 29c to $5.65. While Akorn will appeal, Steinberg assumes the company will remain independent. The analyst forecasts a quarterly revenue run rate of $175M with annual earnings power in the 35c-40c per share range. In the long-term, if the 64 abbreviated new drug application pipeline remains intact, the business "should grow nicely," Steinberg tells investors in a research note. However, the analyst has near-term concerns about Akorn's "over-reliance on one large product," a lack of drug application filings this year, and its ongoing manufacturing deficiencies. He keeps a Hold rating on the shares.
