The Intersection: Crypto and Wall Street This Week

As bitcoin, ethereum and other cryptocurrencies get increasing attention from investors, Wall Street and its traditional banks continue to adjust to the shift. Catch up on this week's top stories highlighting the intersection of these old guard and new school areas of finance with this recap compiled by The Fly. 1. COLLEGE ENDOWMENTS INVEST IN CRYPTO: The endowments of major research universities, including Harvard University, Stanford University, Dartmouth College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of North Carolina, have invested in at least one cryptocurrency fund, signaling crypto's growing acceptance among institutions, the Information reported Wednesday. While many institutions have been hesitant to invest directly in cryptocurrency due to lack of technical knowledge and uncertainty over secure storage of the assets, the move shows that several of the most high-profile institutions in the U.S. are finally ready to enter the cryptocurrency sector. 2. CRYPTO THEFT HITS ROUGHLY $1B: Theft of cryptocurrencies through hacking of exchanges and trading platforms grew to $927M in the first nine month of the year, up about 250% from the level seen in 2017, the New York Post reported Wednesday, citing a CipherTrace report. The report also showed a steadily increasing number of smaller thefts in the range of $20M to $60M, totaling $173M in the third quarter. 3. ECONOMIST CRITICIZES CRYPTO: Global economist Nouriel Roubini testified in front of the U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Community Affairs issuing warnings on multiple aspects of cryptocurrency, CNBC reported Thursday. "Crypto is the mother or father of all scams and bubbles," he said, calling out "scammers" who he claims tapped into "clueless retail investors' FOMO," and then took them for a ride with "scammy crappy assets at the peak that then went into a bust and crash -- in a matter of months -- like you have not seen in any history of financial bubbles." Roubini also took on blockchain saying, "Now that the crypto bloodbath is in full view the new refuge of the crypto scoundrels is 'blockchain,' the technology underlying crypto that is now alleged to be the cure of all global problems, including poverty, famines and even diseases. But as discussed in detail below blockchain is the most over-hyped -- and least useful -- technology in human history. " 4. PLASTIC SURGEON BUYS BITHUMB STAKE: BK Global Consortium, which is led by plastic surgeon and startup investor Kim Byung-gun, has agreed to purchase 50% plus one share of BTC Holding, the largest investor in the operator of Bithumb, one of South Korea's biggest cryptocurrency exchanges, Bloomberg reported Friday. BK Global Consortium, which was already the fifth-largest shareholder of BTC Holding, will pay 400B won, or $352M, for the stake. 5. IDEANOMICS SIGNS JV: On Tuesday, Ideanomics (SSC) announced that it has entered into a joint venture agreement with TPJ to create Ideanomics Resources. The company said, "The 75% Ideanomics owned joint venture has been created to unlock value in the commodities and energy sectors by leveraging and utilizing the Ideanomics Platform-as-a-Service solutions, a suite of strong multi-layer fintech technologies leveraging blockchain and artificial intelligence." The joint venture will be responsible for establishing a commodity and energy digital asset exchange and will initially focus on Africa and the Middle East. CRYPTO STOCK PLAYS: Cryptocurrency revenues have been pointed to as reasons to be bullish on Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Nvidia (NVDA) in select research. Overstock (OSTK), DPW Holdings (DPW), Kodak (KODK), Ideanomics, Riot Blockchain (RIOT), Pareteum (TEUM) and Social Reality (SRAX) are other stocks that have been touted, or promoted themselves, as a way to play the crypto theme. PRICE ACTION: As of time of writing, bitcoin dropped about 4.9% this week to $6,232 in U.S. dollars, according to CoinDesk. Morgan Stanley says TD Ameritrade most likely discount broker to embrace bitcoin
Given recent regulatory approval and the upcoming launch of bitcoin futures trading on CME (CME) and CBOE (CBOE), Morgan Stanley analyst Michael Cyprys said he expects discount brokers including E-Trade (ETFC), TD Ameritrade (AMTD) and Ally Financial (ALLY) to offer bitcoin futures trading within the next few months. Among them, he views TD Ameritrade as most likely to embrace bitcoin and lead the way and Charles Schwab (SCHW) as likely to be a latecomer. Cyprys added that he was surprised, given its status as a "challenger brand," that E-Trade has said it will take "a wait-and-see" approach.

Standpoint raises 2018 bitcoin price target to $28,000 from $20,000
Standpoint Research analyst Ronnie Moas this morning raised his 2018 price target for bitcoin to $28,000 from $20,000. Just over a week ago the analyst raised his 2018 target to $20,000 from $14,000. Moas points out that his longer term public target remains $50,000. He points out in an email that unlike the U.S. dollar, where the government can print money, the supply of bitcoin is capped. We are a couple of years away from being in a situation where hundreds of millions of people around the world are trying to get their hands on a few million bitcoin, Moas contends.

PayPal acceptance lead continues to grow, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst James Faucette said his quarterly tracker shows PayPal maintains its online acceptance lead versus other digital wallets, with acceptance at 79% of the top 500 U.S. Internet retailers, despite investors being "overly concerned" about potential risk to its lead. In the same note, Faucette pointed out that Bitcoin acceptance remained unchanged, with 4 of the top 500 internet retailers he tracks still accepting the cryptocurrency. The analyst, who expects PayPal will continue to benefit from its lead and increasingly serve as a payment-of-choice for non-Amazon merchants, keeps his Overweight rating and $88 price target on the shares.

Standpoint raises 2018 bitcoin price target to $20,000 from $14,000
Standpoint Research analyst Ronnie Moas raised his 2018 price target for bitcoin to $20,000 from $14,000. The current price is around $10,720 and the split-adjusted price is now $12,740 when factoring in Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold and Bitcoin Diamond, Moas tells investors in an intraday email. There is "no way to justify" gold investments equaling 40 times than that of bitcoin, the analyst argues. He thinks an argument can be made that bitcoin will be equal to gold in 10-15 years. Currently, gold has $7T in investments to bitcoin's $180B, according to Moas.

Nomura Instinet ups Square price target to $65 on bitcoin boost
Nomura Instinet analyst Dan Dolev raised his price target for Square (SQ) shares to $65 from $64 saying the impact from bitcoin could be meaningful. The stock closed yesterday up $2.10 to $49.13. Opening Square Cash for bitcoin trading earlier this year could drive a "sizable boost" to revenue and profits, driving up to 10% potential upside to adjusted EBITDA guidance, Dolev tells investors in a research note. He sees bitcoin as helping to offset Square's rising investment costs to broaden its international presence. In asking if bitcoin will reshape the future of payments as Square CEO Jack Dorsey often argues, or if it will just be a passing fad, Dolev points out that the company's correlation with the cryptocurrency has been on a downward trend. Square shares are now less correlated with bitcoin than PayPal (PYPL), the payment networks or Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), Dolev contends. He maintains a Buy rating on Square.

Piper wonders if Microsoft is better than bitcoin
In a research note titled "Better Than Bitcoin?," Piper Jaffray analyst Alex Zukin updated his investment thesis on Microsoft and formally rolled out estimates for 2019. Azure revenues are still growing close to triple digits and channel checks suggest that the company's pipeline of Office 365 remain robust, Zukin tells investors in a research note. He believes his investment thesis on the shares is resonating and reiterates an Overweight rating on Microsoft with a $115 price target. The software giant closed Friday up $1.08 to $88.19. The analyst calls Azure the "single largest growth opportunity" at Microsoft.

Square is not a play on bitcoin, says Nomura Instinet
Nomura Instinet analyst Dan Dolev disagrees with the notion that Square is a play on bitcoin. Cash App downloads have been accelerating despite the slump in bitcoin prices, Dolev tells investors in a research note. For perspective, Coinbase's monthly downloads have turned sharply negative in recent months, the analyst adds. He notes that his firm's payments app tracker shows Square Cash App downloads accelerated in May/June to up 154% year-over-year. Dolev keeps a Buy rating on the shares with an $85 price target. The stock closed yesterday up $1.72 to $64.76.

Fly Intel: Today's top analyst calls on Wall Street
Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. OPCO CUTS CHIPOTLE TO UNDERPERFORM: Oppenheimer analyst Brian Bittner downgraded Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) to Underperform from Perform with a $400 price target. Since its new CEO announcement in February, Chipotle is up 82% and has been upgraded 10 different times by the Street, Bittner noted. The company's "high-flying" valuation has "priced in" persistent mid-single same-store-sales and a path to at least $20 of earnings per share versus $8-$9 this year, the analyst added. His work suggests this earnings path is too optimistic, even when assuming "healthy sales." INTEL CUT TO UNDERWEIGHT BY BARCLAYS: Barclays analyst Blayne Curtis downgraded Intel (INTC) to Underweight from Equal Weight and lowered his price target for the shares to $38 from $53. End-market tailwinds that propelled the run in shares, namely PC shortages and the slowing of server growth, are likely to reverse, Curtis believes. Further, the analyst expects Intel will see increased competition from AMD (AMD) and declining free cash flow returns. In addition, the names that have been floated in the CEO search "have yet to yield any disruptive potential candidates to take on all of these challenges," Curtis said. By squandering its manufacturing lead, the company now faces a "costly battle to retain share amidst a near-term slowing of its end markets," concluded the analyst. MKM CUTS INFINERA TO SELL: MKM Partners analyst Michael Genovese downgraded Infinera (INFN) to Sell from Neutral and lowered his price target to $5.50 from $10. The analyst said his checks suggest the company's loss of its biggest customer CenturyLink (CTL) to Ciena (CIEN) amid concerns with its ability to produce "new leading edge digital signal processors every 18-30 months". Genovese expects Infinera's upcoming guidance for Q4 and FY19 to be disappointing on revenues and margins, while his price target that assumes a valuation multiple of 0.8-times enterprise value to expected FY19 sales "reflects increasing concerns about the long-term competitiveness of the company." TEVA UPGRADED AT LEERINK, GOLDMAN: Leerink analyst Ami Fadia upgraded Teva (TEVA) to Market Perform from Underperform due to improving business fundamentals as well as the improving multiples for the overall generics sector. The analyst, who believes the company's fundamentals have improved meaningfully and put Teva in a position to pay down $3.5B in debt by YE18, raised his price target on the shares to $24 from $16. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs analyst Jami Rubin added Teva to Goldman's Conviction List with a Buy rating, calling the recent selloff in the shares a "head scratcher." Recent concerns raised in the marketplace regarding second half of 2018 headwinds and Eli Lilly's (LLY) galcenuzemab approval were already expected and well understood, Rubin tells investors in a research note. DEUTSCHE CUTS LAM RESEARCH, APPLIED MATERIALS TO HOLD: Deutsche Bank analyst Sidney Ho downgraded Lam Research (LRCX) to Hold and lowered his price target for the shares to $170 from $230, and downgraded Applied Materials (AMAT) to Hold and lowered his price target for the shares to $43 from $58. Semicap Equipment stocks are not expensive but lack positive catalysts, Ho said. The analyst believes investor fears over that the industry has reached a cyclical peak will remain as long as the memory market stays weak. Further, he sees risk is for additional capex push-outs, especially in the first half of 2019.

AMD lead over Intel within 7nm server remains intact, says BofA/Merrill
BofA Merrill Lynch analyst Vivek Arya noted that AMD (AMD) shares have underperformed Intel's (INTC) by about 28 percentage points since September 12 amid media reports that the latter is accelerating purchases of 10nm equipment. Intel's recent backing of its 2018 outlook also threw cold water on some bullish expectations for AMD to capture share in current-generation technology, add Arya. However, while Intel can slightly improve launch timing for next-gen 10nm-based PC processors, the launch of the more critical server parts is still unlikely before mid-2020, at-best, Arya believes. Also, AMD's 6 to 9 month lead with its 7nm server chips, which are already sampling, remains intact, said the analyst, who keeps a Buy rating on AMD and Neutral rating on Intel shares.

Fly Intel: Today's top analyst calls on Wall Street
Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. CITI CUTS TESLA TO SELL: Citi analyst Itay Michaeli downgraded Tesla (TSLA) to Sell from Neutral and lowered his price target for the shares to $225 from $356. The analyst is making a "risk/reward call" into the outcome of the SEC lawsuit against CEO Elon Musk. In a scenario where the suit leads to Musk's exit, the analyst says there is "little question" that the departure would likely cause harm to Tesla's brand, stakeholder confidence and fundraising. This would increase the risk of triggering a "downward confidence spiral" given the state of Tesla's balance sheet, Michaeli said. Even if Musk were to stay on after settling or prevailing, the analyst believes the "reputational harm" from the suit "might still prevent the stock from immediately returning to 'normal.'" SUNTRUST UPGRADES LOWE'S TO BUY: SunTrust analyst Keith Hughes upgraded Lowe's (LOW) to Buy from Hold and raised his price target to $138 from $110. The analyst cites the company's latest Q2 earnings and the analyst meeting with its management suggesting an "internally focused" turnaround progressing at a "consistent pace" over the next 2-3 years. Hughes adds that even though the stock has recently turned higher, it could rise as much as 50% if the company could reclaim just half of the SG&A difference with Home Depot (HD). STIFEL STARTS ZYNGA WITH A BUY: Stifel analyst Drew Crum initiated Zynga (ZNGA) with a Buy rating and a price target of $5. The analyst cites the "favorable industry for mobile gaming", with annualized mobile gaming revenue expected to increase by 17%. Crum also cites his expectations of greater visibility on its game pipeline and further opportunities to improve adjusted EBITDA. WELLS DOWNGRADES CONTAINERSHIP NAMES: Wells Fargo analyst Michael Webber downgraded the Box Lessor and Containership group saying headwinds from both the International Maritime Organization 2020 fuel regulations and the impact of tariffs have created "significant downside risks" for the stocks. He downgraded Triton International (TRTN), CAI International (CAI) and Costamare (CMRE), all to Market Perform from Outperform, and cut Seaspan (SSW) and Textainer (TGH) to Underperform from Market Perform. He kept a Market Perform rating on Matson (MATX) with an unchanged price target of $35. EVERCORE BOOSTS NVIDIA PRICE TARGET: Evercore ISI analyst C.J. Muse said he believes investors are now more appreciative of Nvidia's (NVDA) opportunity in creating the AI industry standard and the company's "positive feedback loop" within deep learning. Longer-term, he sees tremendous growth opportunities led by the new Turing architecture, which further entrenches Nvidia's high-end gaming moat and presents a "meaningful" opportunity in Inference, Muse said. The analyst, who sees Nvidia being poised to grow EPS at a 30-35% CAGR through 2020 and beyond, raised his price target on the stock to $400 from $300 and kept an Outperform rating on the shares.

The analyst states however that that investors should take advantage of the pullback to add to or initiate longs based on the company's position as a "preeminent player in the emerging AI and machine learning economy". Kelleher also cites Nvidia's recent GPU Compute Conference profiling its RAPIDS data science acceleration platform as well as its recent announcement of Volvo (VLVLY) selecting its NVidia Drive AGX Xavier for its production cars starting early in the 2020s.
