Bank of America, Morgan Stanley top ideas into Q2 earnings season, says Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Richard Ramsden expects Bank of America (BAC) and Morgan Stanley (MS) to beat consensus estimates in Q2. The analyst argues that both appear best positioned, while he sees risk for U.S. Bancorp (USB) and JPMorgan (JPM). Ramsden highlights Bank of America given the material valuation dislocation that looks to support the stock over time. Additionally, the analyst expects an expense and NII beat for Morgan Stanley.

U.S. banks 'in very good shape,' says Oppenheimer, favorites include BofA, Citi
Oppenheimer analyst Chris Kotowski tells investors in a research note that the U.S. banking group is on solid footing with balance sheets less risky than at any time over the last 33 years the firm covered the group and says his favorite bank stocks are Outperform-rated Bank of America (BAC), Citi (C), CIT (CIT) and Goldman Sachs (GS). However, Kotowski notes that banks are trading at an average relative P/E of just ~66% relative to the S&P 500 and returning to a historical avg valuation of 73%-80% range would imply over a thousand basis points of outperformance by the group. In his view, the U.S. banks are, on the whole, in "very good" shape.

Tesla may now be 'sustainably self-funded entity,' says Nomura Instinet
Tesla "flexed its model leverage muscles" in Q3, exhibiting a "dramatic swing from negative to positive on a number of key metrics," Nomura Instinet analyst Romit Shah tells investors in a post-earnings research note titled "From Negative to Positive." These included Model 3 gross margins, earnings, and most importantly, cash flow, says Shah. He points out that Tesla reiterated its confidence in continued profitability and free cash flow positivity in every period going forward. In other words, Q3 may mark the quarter in which Tesla became a "sustainably self-funded entity," contends Shah. He keeps a Neutral rating on the shares with a $300 price target. The stock in premarket trading is up 11%, or $30.65, to $319.15.

Concerns over Tesla margins remains after profitable Q3, says Needham
Needham analyst Rajvindra Gill kept his Underperform rating on Tesla, saying that while the company posted its first quarterly profit and positive free cash flow in over two years in Q3 thanks to higher-margin Model 3 sales, he remains concerned over margin in the first half of 2019. The analyst cites an "unfavorable mix shift of Model 3s, decline in ZEV sales, service margins stay in -35-40% and pricing pressure on Model S/X". Gill also questions the speed and profitability of Tesla's production of a $45K car, "not to mention the $35K version", in order to match its backlog of orders.

Tesla results put 'extreme bear case to rest,' says Barclays
The cash generation and stronger margin performance in Tesla's Q3 "put the 'extreme' bear case to rest for a while but doesn't dispel the valuation debate," Barclays analyst Brian Johnson tells investors in a post-earnings research note titled "Extreme bear fears of distress prove misplaced." Further, the analyst feels that while Tesla's profit and improvement "was impressive," it comes after a "rich Model 3 mix" that's unlikely to be replicated. Tesla will soon be facing flat sequential revenue growth and by year-end 2019, slower year-over-year growth, says Johnson. The analyst keeps an Underweight rating on Tesla, but admits he does not have "near-term hopes" of seeing his $210 price target. However, he believes Tesla's "stabilizing growth" makes his "long-term valuation more realistic."

Tesla price target raised to $225 from $195 at JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman raised his price target for Tesla to $225 from $195 citing the company's sooner than expected profit and cash generation. The analyst expects a "strong positive reaction" to Tesla's "materially" better than expected Q3 results last night He points out that revenue, gross margin, earnings, and, most importantly in his view, free cash flow all tracked better than was expected. Brinkman now expects Tesla's first full year of positive earnings to be in 2019 versus 2020 prior. The analyst, however, keeps an Underweight rating on the shares. He cites valuation for the rating and concern that the new stronger trajectory to earnings and cash "may prove less sustainable than the market is likely to presume."

He estimates the company will lowered its earnings per share outlook to $4.00-$4.50 from $4.50-$5.00. Deutsche Bank analyst Bryan Kraft resumed coverage of Comcast with a Buy rating and $43 price target. The uncertainty of the Sky and Fox pursuits, which has weighed on the shares since early February, is now mostly behind the company, Kraft tells investors in a research note. The remaining areas of uncertainty lie in Sky's financial outlook under Comcast's ownership, the analyst adds. However, he points out that Sky represents only about 10% of Comcast's pro forma consolidated EBITDA, making the potential impact of the remaining related uncertainties limited, Kraft says. He believes Comcast offers an attractive valuation at current share levels.

Newell weakness on potential Sears bankruptcy fears overdone, says Wells Fargo
Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog believes today's weakness in shares of Newell Brands (NWL) is likely due to concerns about a potential bankruptcy of Sears (SHLD) as well as ongoing China tariff negotiations. However, she views the move as a "complete overreaction," arguing that Newell's exposure to Sears is fairly limited. Wells sees 'significant' upside in Newell, even in bear case scenario
Wells Fargo analyst Bonnie Herzog continues to see value in Newell Brands that she thinks the Street is missing. The analyst believes Newell's $10B divestiture plan will "unlock significant value" and leave a "simpler, faster growing" company with "significant" exposure to e-commerce "that should ultimately garner a higher multiple." Additional divestiture announcements and a better fundamental outlook for the second half of 2018 provide near-term catalysts for the shares, Herzog tells investors in a research note titled "We See Significant Upside Potential Even In Bear Case Scenario." The analyst sees limited downside risk to current share levels and believes the new board is highly focused on unlocking value. She thinks that if the shares remain weak, the board would not hesitate to explore more aggressive actions like a management change or complete break-up. Herzog sees a favorable risk/reward, with potential 17% upside in a bear case and 75% upside in a bull case. She reiterates an Outperform rating on Newell Brands with a $33 price target.

Morgan Stanley downgrades Cabot Oil to Equal Weight on lower nat gas price view
As previously reported, Morgan Stanley analyst Devin McDermott downgraded Cabot Oil & Gas (COG) to Equal Weight from Overweight after lowering his long-term natural gas price forecast to $2.50 from $2.75 and increasing his price assumptions for ethane in late 2018 and 2019. He also lowered his price target on Cabot shares to $23 from $29. U.S. natural gas should soon enter a new cycle of structural oversupply and stagnating demand, contends McDermott. Given that view, and the fact that oil weighted E&Ps trade at similar multiples to nat gas producers, McDermott remains Underweight on nat gas producers Range Resources (RRC), Gulfport Energy (GPOR) and Southwestern Energy (SWN).

Daiwa remains positive on TAL, New Oriental after new tutoring regulations
Shares of TAL Education (TAL) and New Oriental Education (EDU) traded lower yesterday on speculation that the Chinese government was about to release new regulations for the K-12 tutoring industry, Daiwa John Choi tells investors in a research note. Today, China's State Council published a directive in relation to regulations for after-school training institutions, the analyst adds. He believes some of the major regulations that could potentially disrupt the daily operations of TAL and New Oriental include legal compliance of institutions in areas of licensing and staff teaching qualifications, academic course details being submitted to the regional education department and publicly disclosed, tutorial sessions not overlapping with school time and having to end no later than 8pm, and institutions not being able to collect no more than three months of tuition prepayments. Choi expects the measures to reduce the financial visibility on the affected deferred revenue balances for TAL and New Oriental, but views China's new directive as favorable for scalable tutoring companies in China that have high compliance standards. He remains long-term positive on the sector and optimistic of the growth prospects of TAL and New Oriental "given their high teaching standards."
