Fly Intel: What to watch in Amazon earnings report

Amazon (AMZN) is scheduled to report results of its third fiscal quarter after the market close on Thursday, October 25, with a conference call scheduled for 5:30 pm ET. What to watch for: 1. CLOUD: Last quarter, Amazon reported Q2 Amazon Web Services net sales of $6.105B, which was up from $4.10B in the same quarter of last year. AWS operating income grew to $1.64B from $916M in the prior year period. Following Microsoft's (MSFT) quarterly report last night, Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said the company is still in the early innings of benefiting from a transformational secular cloud shift in its "two-horse race" with Amazon as more enterprises around the world head down the cloud path. Ives is bullish on Microsoft into 2019 given his thesis that Azure's cloud momentum is still in its early days of playing out. 2. WAGE HIKE IMPACT: On October 2, Amazon announced plans to raise the minimum wage for all its U.S. employees to $15, effective November 1, and encouraged its "competitors and other large employers" to join in the action. The pay hike comes amid a wave of criticism from politicians, led by Senator Bernie Sanders, about the e-commerce giant's treatment of warehouse workers. Earlier this week, Jefferies analyst Brent Thill lowered his price target for Amazon.com to $2,260 from $2,350 after "taking a stab at" quantifying the impact from the company's minimum wage hike and a proposed U.S. Postal rate increase for 2019. The analyst says he tried to keep his estimates "on the conservative side" given the "limited visibility into many of the variables involved." With that said, Thill concluded that the cumulative impact should be close to $2.2B in 2019 and represent about 1% of Amazon's combined cost of goods sold and operating expenses for the year. He keeps a Buy rating on the stock. 3. 'BIT MORE CAUTIOUS': Meanwhile, JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth said Amazon was one of his top picks, along with Twitter (TWTR) and Yelp (YELP), into the company's Q3 earnings report. Amazon shares are up 53% year-to-date but down 12% since reaching an all-time high on September 4, Anmuth noted. He sees margin risk relative to consensus expectations, potential for greater than expected revenue and unit deceleration, and increased regulatory/antitrust scrutiny as key investor concerns. After taking a closer look at Q3 earnings data points, Anmuth is a "bit more cautious" on Amazon into earnings given what he views as less upside to his Q3 net sales estimate and potential risk to consensus Q4 estimates. However, there's no change to the analyst's "long-term bull thesis." He keeps an Overweight rating on Amazon with a $2,200 price target. 4. CHINESE SPYING DRAMA: An Amazon executive has joined Apple (AAPL) CEO Tim Cook in demanding that Bloomberg retract its report on spying microchips. The Apple CEO told Buzzfeed last week that Bloomberg needs to "do the right thing" and retract the story. "@tim_cook is right. Bloomberg story is wrong about Amazon, too," Amazon Web Services executive Andy Jassy said in a tweet on Monday. Also on Monday, Super Micro (SMCI) denied the malicious chip report and said it is undertaking a "complicated and time-consuming review to further address the article."

Microsoft momentum continues after another cloud beat, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives notes Microsoft (MSFT) delivered another "robust" quarter. The company exceeded expectations on nearly every metric across the board with no soft spots. Redmond is still in the early innings of benefiting from a transformational secular cloud shift in this two-horse race with Amazon (AMZN) as more enterprises around the world head down the cloud path. Ives is bullish on Microsoft into 2019 given his thesis on Azure's cloud momentum is still in its early days of playing out with the company's massive installed base, Office 365 transition on consumer/enterprise providing growth tailwinds for the next 12-18 months at least, and newer integrated product initiatives around consumers and cloud services are still playing out within Redmond's ubiquitous installed base of consumers and enterprises worldwide. He reiterates an Outperform rating and $140 price target on Microsoft shares.

Shift to cloud 'significantly' benefiting Microsoft, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives notes Microsoft (MSFT) will be reporting its Q1 results this week and expects Nadella & Co. to post another solid beat on both the top and bottom line as cloud strength on Azure and Office 365 continues to be the fuel in the tank, with strong field checks indicating the company could beat commercial cloud expectations by 3%-5%. While the massive secular shift to the cloud is a "two horse race" between Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft, the analyst is seeing a clear inflection point in the field as more enterprises and government agencies make this transformational move to a hybrid cloud architecture with Redmond making a major partner push on the SMB front. Ives believes the shift to cloud is a major secular trend that is "significantly" benefiting Microsoft in the field as a key tailwind and should continue its momentum heading into FY2019. Ives reiterates an Outperform rating and $140 price target on Microsoft's shares.

Q3 should be a 'solid' quarter for Amazon, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Edward Yruma believes Q3 should be a "solid" quarter for Amazon. Comparisons have gotten a bit tougher since Amazon is now cycling the Whole Foods acquisition and Q2 likely received some benefit from a late spring, he contends. Similar to 1H, the analyst thinks advertising likely remained a driver to margin. For AWS, Yruma remains confident that revenue is poised to double to $46B by 2020. He reiterates a Sector Weight rating on the shares.

Microsoft to benefit from hybrid cloud migration, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Brad Zelnick argues that strong Q1 results reinforce his thesis that Microsoft will be a primary beneficiary of a migration to hybrid cloud environments and is uniquely positioned versus other hyper scale competitors given its hybrid architectural advantage. The analyst notes that the quarter overall was strong despite Azure revenue slightly below his estimates and Q2 was largely guided ahead of Street when adjusting for GitHub. Zelnick reiterates an Outperform rating and $125 price target on the shares.

Microsoft shares should 'grind higher' amid solid execution, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Keith Weiss said Microsoft is seeing the hybrid cloud benefits and notes that its improved secular positioning and solid execution have now lead to seven straight quarters of accelerating revenue growth. The analyst, who raised his FY19 EPS estimates by 4% following the company's Q1 earnings report, believes the shares "should grind higher" toward his $130 price target. Weiss maintains an Overweight rating on Microsoft.

Cloud/Internet reshaping Microsoft growth, profit trajectory, says KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Brent Bracelin reiterates an Overweight rating on Microsoft shares, while raising his price target on the stock to $125 from $123 on a multiyear model transformation driven by fast-growing cloud and internet segments that he estimates could top $70B in revenue by CY20 versus $18.5B in CY16. Further, the analyst points out that the $1.2B revenue beat for Q1 was "impressive," marking the seventh consecutive increase in total revenue growth to 18.5% year over year driven by internet, cloud, server tools, and gaming momentum.

The analyst notes that investors are likely to throw the "baby out with the bath water" after Texas Instruments (TXN) spoke about softness across the board. But contrary to Texas Instruments, STMicroelectronics is seeing substantial increase in content in Apple (AAPL) phones this year as well as continued increasing content in autos, he contends. Apple's revenue, EPS estimates raised at Bernstein
Bernstein analyst A.M. Sacconaghi, Jr. is raising his Q4 and FY19 revenue and EPS estimates for Apple, largely due to richer ASP assumptions for iPhone and Watch. Overall, Sacconaghi forecasts Q4 iPhone ASPs of $800, versus consensus at $741, resulting in revenues of $63.3B versus consensus at $61.3B and EPS of $2.90 versus consensus at $2.77. For FY 19, he expects flattish iPhone unit growth and gross margins year over year, but expects notably higher iPhone ASPs, which leads his revenue and EPS estimates to be above consensus forecasts. That said, the analyst believes that iPhone unit growth is likely to be the critical metric for investors going forward, and sees the stock likely continuing to outperform if iPhone units can grow in FY 19, and the stock underperforming if units are down 3% or more.

Fly Intel: Today's top analyst calls on Wall Street
Check out today's top analyst calls from around Wall Street, compiled by The Fly. HP CUT TO NEUTRAL AT JPMORGAN: JPMorgan analyst Paul Coster downgraded HP Inc. (HPQ) to Neutral from Overweight while raising his price target for the shares to $29 from $28. Despite the company's "excellent execution," the shares have limited catalysts ahead, Coster told investors in a research note following the company's analyst day. The analyst recommended investors take profits with the stock up 24% year-to-date. HP shares were lower by 1.9% to $25.91 in late morning trading. ELI LILLY UPGRADED TO OUTPERFORM AT BMO: BMO Capital analyst Alex Arfaei upgraded Eli Lilly (LLY) to Outperform from Market Perform and raised his price target on the shares to $130 from $107. The analyst cited the prospects of LY3298176, a GIP and GLP-1 dual receptor agonist presented at EASD 54th Annual Meeting, which he believes "meaningfully improves" the company's long-term growth prospects. Arfaei sees "continued strong growth of the GLP-1 class" and anticipates an annualized revenue growth of about 15% through 2027, adding that he is also positive on Eli Lilly's margins and its other indications in fields such as obesity. Eli Lilly shares were higher by 1.8% to $115.01 in late morning trading. PEPSI CUT TO NEUTRAL AT MACQUARIE: Macquarie analyst Caroline Levy downgraded Pepsi (PEP) to Neutral from Outperform and cut its price target to $107 from $122 following the company's Q3 report. Levy noted that Pepsi reported solid Q3 organic sales growth of 5%, but EBIT margins fell do to increased brand spending, higher input costs abroad due to FX hikes, and higher freight. The analyst said she expects these pressures to remain a drag on margins and cut estimates to reflect dilution from the Sodastream acquisition, tougher comps, and lack of tax reform benefits. Further, Levy expects organic sales growth will require more investment while costs continue to climb. ROKU STARTED WITH A NEUTRAL AT WEDBUSH: Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter initiated Roku (ROKU) with a Neutral rating and $73 price target. While Roku has built an "exceptional" platform on the back of its players and is positioning itself as the best-in-class option for OTT advertising, Roku's growth is fully priced into its share price, Pachter told investors in a research note. The analyst believes that any pullback may provide an opportunity to build a position. SUPER MICRO COMPUTER CUT TO HOLD AT MAXIM: Maxim analyst Nehal Chokshi downgraded Super Micro Computer (SMCI) to Hold from Buy. The analyst stated that while the Bloomberg Businessweek article alleging the company's "servers sold to customers contained malicious microchips" were strongly refuted, the detail, the reputable nature of the source, and the number of cross reference checks lend to its credibility. Chokshi further noted that the company's ongoing delay in releasing its 2017 10K filing adds to his concerns, stating that he no longer sees reward relative to risk as asymmetric. Super Micro Computer shares were higher by 3.1% to $12.99 in late morning trading.

Piper calls Nutanix top pick after management addressed stock concerns
Piper Jaffray analyst Andrew Nowinski says Nutanix (NTNX) is his top pick with an Overweight rating and $66 price target after hosting an investor call with management. Management addressed all of the primary concerns that have been pressuring the stock since the last earnings call on August 30, Nowinski tells investors in a research note. Management said they investigated the potential breach of components from Super Micro Computer (SMCI) months ago and found no evidence of tampering. Further, more than half of all applications running on Nutanix are classified as business-critical or tier one applications, suggesting Nutanix is now able to address the same, broad storage market demands as the all-flash vendors, the analyst adds. He continues to believe Nutanix is well positioned to generate 40%-plus revenue growth over the next few years.
