Piper lays out favorite Consumer stocks to own into holiday season

Piper Jaffray analysts led by Erinn Murphy believe the "solid" consumer spending in the first half of the year can continue into the second half with "favorable weather, clean inventories and an extra day between Thanksgiving & Christmas this year serving as catalysts." (PVH), Take-Two Interactive (TTWO), Netflix (NFLX), GoDaddy (GDDY) and Ruth's Hospitality (RUTH). Piper analysts are cautious on shares of Stitch Fix (SFIX) and Michaels (MIK).

G-III Apparel price target raised to $54 from $51 at Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Erinn Murphy raised his price target for G-III Apparel Group to $54 after traveling with management yesterday in Boston. While tariffs and rising freight costs remain challenges for the operating environment, management indicates retailers are disciplined with their inventory, the channel is clean and the consumer demand environment is robust, Murphy tells investors in a research note. The analyst sees positive momentum at G-III in the second half of the year and believes her estimates will prove conservative. Murphy keeps an Overweight rating on the shares.

G-III Apparel price target raised to $56 from $53 at Needham
Needham analyst Rick Patel raised his price target on G-III Apparel to $56 and kept his Buy rating after its Q2 earnings beat. The analyst says the company's "positive momentum across products and brands", along with the "healthy" department store environment, should allow G-III Apparel to meet or beat its FY19 forecasts in the short term. Longer term, Patel is positive on the "significant growth potential" of underpenetrated brands such as DKNY/DK, Tommy Hilfiger, and Karl Lagerfel.

Under Armour's return to growth in NA may not occur before 2H19, says Canaccord
Canaccord analyst Camilo Lyon maintained a Sell rating and $13 price target on Under Armour following the company's Q3 results. In a research note to investors, Lyon says that while the company's results may hint at a turn in the business, he believes the timing shifts on both sales and expenses muddy the challenges the company still faces and he has yet to see innovation materialize that would fuel a return to consistent North America growth. Next year's return to growth in the region likely won't materialize before 2H19, given the significant amount of off-price sales that have unfolded this year, he contends, and says he is "hard pressed" to see material growth in its key sporting goods channel before 2020 at earliest.

Under Armour (UA, UAA) upgraded to Overweight from Neutral at Piper Jaffray with analyst Erinn Murphy saying while the shares have moved considerably off the bottom over the last 12 months and reflect in part the company's opportunity to expand operating margin from 3.2% to low-double-digits over time, its sales opportunity remains underappreciated at current stock levels. 2. Starbucks (SBUX) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Mizuho with analyst Jeremy Scott saying the company's earnings growth is set to accelerate. 3. Netflix (NFLX) upgraded to Buy from Underperform at Buckingham with analyst Matthew Harrigan saying he has always viewed Netflix as the continued top streaming category winner but previously was skeptical about its elevated stock price. 4. Signature Bank (SBNY) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at UBS with analyst Brock Vandervliet saying the company's net interest margin "inflection" in Q3 signals spread income growth is forthcoming. 5. iRobot (IRBT) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Canaccord with analyst Jed Dorsheimer saying he believes the company's greatest asset may lie in its network it has launched to map a user's house. While the shares have moved considerably off the bottom over the last 12 months and reflect in part the company's opportunity to expand operating margin from 3.2% to low-double-digits over time, its sales opportunity remains underappreciated at current stock levels, Murphy tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes favorable industry dynamics and direct-to-consumer mix benefit will enable Under Armour to be on a path towards mid-to-high single digit sales growth over time. Further, she points out the brand says "impressive mindshare gains" in her firm's Women's Survey this Fall.

Estee Lauder price target cut to $145 from $150 at Stifel
Stifel analyst Mark Astrachan maintained a Buy rating on Estee Lauder (EL) but cut his price target to $145 from $150, citing a lower multiple that reflects compression across staples and luxury peers and increased risk of decelerating sales growth due to geopolitical and macroeconomic factors in China and Travel Retail. In a research note to investors, Astrachan says he believes global prestige beauty growth remains favorable, evidenced by strong results from LVMH (LVMUY), and continues to view FY sales growth expectations of 7%-8% as "conservative." Longer term he views sales and EPS targets of 6%-8% and double-digit as "achievable."

Estee Lauder price target lowered to $136 from $149 at Citi
In a research note titled "There Is an Awful Lot of Smoke, but Will There Be Fire?," Citi analyst Wendy Nicholson lowered her price target for Estee Lauder to $136 from $149 and keeps a Neutral rating on the shares. At first glance, the company's business is pretty broad-based, but when taking a closer look, spending by Chinese people represented around 25% of Estee's sales and around 40% of its profits in fiscal 2018, Nicholson tells investors in the note, citing her estimates. The analyst believes non-China, non-travel retail, organic growth for Estee in fiscal 2018 was in the low-single digits. Nicholson, who admits there's no reason to believe that Estee Lauder's growth in travel retail or in China will "evaporate all of a sudden," thinks the company's "still-premium valuation" generally reflects investor expectation that management's guidance will prove to be too conservative. Until the company reports on October 31, the analyst finds it "best to stay on the sidelines."

Teen survey shows surprising share gains for Crocs, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Erinn Murphy says her firm's 36th semi-annual survey of 8,600 teens across 48 states shows that video games and food "remain multi-year share gainers within teen wallets." Beauty, while not as high as the spring survey, generally continues its uptrend, Murphy tells investors in a research note. She points out that the most notable brand gainers have been VF Corp.'s (VFC) Vans, Adidas (ADDYY), Lululemon (LULU) and "surprisingly" Crocs (CROX). Further, teens' favorite restaurant is Chick-Fil-A followed by Starbucks (SBUX), while Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) "gained share sequentially," says Murphy. Piper says 'Red Dead 2' unit estimates look conservative after record launch
After Take-Two (TTWO) announced $725M of first weekend sell-through for "Red Dead Redemption 2," Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson noted this was about 40% above the sales Activision (ATVI) announced "Call of Duty: Black Ops 4" sold during its first weekend. He believes buy-side expectations for Black Ops 4 are 23-24M units by the end of December, while expectations for Red Dead were previously about 19M by the end of March, which now appear overly conservative. While he is not raising his own estimate for 15.5M units for FY19 yet, Olson said it also "appears conservative." He reiterates an Overweight rating and $145 price target on Take-Two shares.

Netflix well positioned for price raises with better content, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says the primary determinant in the ability of Netflix to raise price is subscriber perception of content quality. The analyst notes that Piper's survey of more than 1,100 domestic Netflix subscribers shows that the majority feel the quality of Netflix content has improved in the past year. Netflix content quality continues to improve and as more content dollars shift from traditional pay TV towards various online services, those with improving content quality will be able to command a larger percentage of consumer content wallet share, Olson tells investors in a research note. He believes that as Netflix continues to leverage data and invest in the content library, it will be well positioned to further raise price. GoDaddy, Wix.com unaffected by VeriSign agreement, says JPMorgan
VeriSign (VRSN) last night announced that it reached an agreement with the Department of Commerce that gives the company the ability to once again raise prices on .com names by 7% max each of the last four years of its new six-year agreement, JPMorgan analyst Sterling Auty tells investors in a research note. This pricing flexibility is similar to what VeriSign had prior to 2012, the analyst adds. He believes that to the extent registrars can pass any price increases through to customers, like they did the last couple of price increases pre-2012, VeriSign's agreement should be a non-event to companies like GoDaddy (GDDY) and "definitely a non-event" to Wix.com (WIX), which he notes is not a registrar. However, if pricing in domains comes under pressure, any registry price increases could have an adverse effect on registrar gross margins like GoDaddy's (GDDY), says Auty.

Sigman thinks an Amazon partnership can help drive incremental growth for Michael's in the near-term and thinks the mix may skew to higher price points than the company's typical mix. He keeps an Outperform rating on Michael's share, which are up 4% to $21.02 in late morning trading.

Michaels added to Analyst Focus List at JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Christopher Horvers added Michaels to his firm's Analyst Focus List as a value idea. The stock's selloff since the Q1 report creates a "highly attractive entry point considering the historic low valuation," Horvers tells investors in a research note. The analyst views a "substantial buyback" as the most likely outcome for the company's cash position post two quarters of inactivity. After hosting meetings with management Horvers keeps an Overweight rating on Michaels with a $25 price target.
