Colgate-Palmolive downgraded to Hold at SunTrust after disappointing Q3 results
As noted earlier, SunTrust analyst William Chappell downgraded Colgate-Palmolive to Hold from Buy and lowered his price target to $65 from $80 following "another disappointing" quarterly result this morning. The analyst notes that among the drivers of his upgrade on the stock last year - favorable comparisons for the developed markets, improving trends in emerging markets, and favorable FX - only the first has been sustained. Chappell is recommending that investors move to the sidelines until the company shows more evidence of a turnaround.

U.S. banks 'in very good shape,' says Oppenheimer, favorites include BofA, Citi
Oppenheimer analyst Chris Kotowski tells investors in a research note that the U.S. banking group is on solid footing with balance sheets less risky than at any time over the last 33 years the firm covered the group and says his favorite bank stocks are Outperform-rated Bank of America (BAC), Citi (C), CIT (CIT) and Goldman Sachs (GS). However, Kotowski notes that banks are trading at an average relative P/E of just ~66% relative to the S&P 500 and returning to a historical avg valuation of 73%-80% range would imply over a thousand basis points of outperformance by the group. In his view, the U.S. banks are, on the whole, in "very good" shape.

Goldman starts Nordstrom with Conviction Buy, Macy's with Sell
Goldman Sachs analyst Alexandra Walvis initiated coverage of the Apparel & Accessories Retail sector with an Attractive coverage view. The analyst sees an "ongoing role for select best-in-class brick and mortar retailers" and feels "underappreciated business models" offer upside in select stocks. Walvis initiated coverage of Nordstrom (JWN) with a Buy rating and $73 price target and added the shares to her firm's Conviction List. The company offers a "full price business with a strong omnichannel offer and premium curated product," the analyst tells investors in a research note. On the other side, Walvis started Macy's (M) with a Sell rating and $33 price target. The company's strategic initiatives are insufficient to offset traffic headwinds for its portfolio of large, mall-based stores, Walvis contends. Citi sees three catalysts in three months for shares of NIO

The analyst sees three catalysts for the shares in the next months. The first being December ES8 sales and production run-rate accelerating to 30,000 units from November's 23,000-25,000 units. The second being NIO announcing ES6 order backlog status between the end of fiscal 2018 and January 2019. And the third being the company's Q4 earnings report in February 2019. Midterms broadly positive for U.S. cannabis industry, says Canaccord

Demand for adult use cannabis 'seemingly strong' in Canada, says Cowen
Citing her analysis of e-commerce platforms for adult use cannabis in Canada, Cowen analyst Vivien Azer remains encouraged to see "seemingly strong demand" as well as some instances of improved supply. In a research note pre-market open, the analyst notes she aggregated 533 product offerings with 1,149 SKUs from the e-commerce platforms for Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland and Labrador. Overall, SKU stockout rates across the provinces were flat versus last week at 57%, although remains above the 46% rate during the prior week, Azer adds. Her view of the data is a modest positive for Canopy Growth (CGC), which has the second highest number of SKUs and out of stock rates declined from 65% to 54% while adding 16 SKUs this week. The read-through on Tilray (TLRY) is less clear, Azer contends, as the only three provinces where the company did not get supply agreements were all in her five province survey universe. The analyst reiterated an Outperform rating on Canopy Growth and Tilray.

Scotiabank analyst Oliver Rowe initiated Canopy Growth with a Sector Perform rating and C$61 price target. While Canopy is the dominant Canadian player and global leader in the rapidly evolving cannabis space, giving it a first-mover advantage and potential to be the largest global producer of legal cannabis, he thinks the stock is fully valued. Given its relationship with Constellation Brands (STZ), Rowe believes Canopy is well positioned to enter the cannabis-based beverage market, but he also thinks Canopy ultimately "wants to build brands, not production." Canopy's product development and branding will yield significantly more value for investors than simply an agreement to provide the product, added Rowe.

Vertical sees Cleveland-Cliffs shares heading to near $5 amid excessive supply
In a research note titled "Does the US Steel Industry Supply/Demand Backdrop Suggest CLF is Nearing the 'Cliff'?," Vertical Group analyst Gordon Johnson maintains a Sell rating on shares of Cleveland-Cliffs. The analyst believes "excess" supply is ramping into a "late cycle" U.S. steel market. Growth for sheet products in Q2 went negative at down 1.6% year-over-year, a "sharp deceleration" from the trailing four quarter average of 5.1% year-over-year growth, Johnson writes to investors. In addition, with 10-year U.S. treasury rates at levels not seen since 2011, continued headwinds to both auto and construction demand in the U.S. is likely, the analyst contends. Lastly, he points out that after peaking on July 12, U.S. hot rolled coil spot prices have dropped 8.9% in just over three months. Steel investors have historically reacted "rather negatively to late cycle irrational capacity ramps," Johnson cautions. He has a 12-month price target of $5.13 for shares of Cleveland-Cliffs. The stock in morning trading is down 4%, or 47c, to $10.87.

Credit Suisse downgrades U.S. Steel sector along with three stocks
Credit Suisse analyst Curt Woodworth downgraded his view on the U.S. Steel sector to Market Weight from Overweight due to concerns with new supply entering the sheet market as well as with U.S demand as interest rates rise. The analyst sees "limited potential for multiple expansion given late cycle fears." Along with the sector, the analyst downgraded Nucor (NUE), Steel Dynamics (STLD), and Cleveland-Cliffs (CLF) to Neutral from Outperform.
