Fly Intel: What to watch in J.C. Penney earnings report

J.C. Penney (JCP) is scheduled to report results of its third fiscal quarter before the market open on Thursday, November 15, with a conference call scheduled for 8:30 am EDT. What to watch for: 1. EXECUTIVE CHANGES: In early November, J.C. Penney named its second interim CFO after the abrupt resignation of its permanent CFO last month. The retailer said Michael Fung will assume the interim CFO role from Jerry Murray, who will return to his previous position as senior vice president of finance. Murray was named interim CFO in September when Jeffrey Davis resigned after less than two years on the job. Previously, the retailer named Jill Soltau, the former president and CEO of Joann Stores, as CEO. Former CEO Marvin Ellison left the company in May to become CEO of Lowe's (LOW), and the CEO role at J.C. Penney had been vacant ever since. This summer, Chief Customer Officer Joe McFarland quit after less than a year to become executive vice president, stores, at Lowe's. 2. TURNAROUND EFFORTS: Analysts and investors will listen for comments from the retailer on its cost cutting moves. Last year, J.C. Penney reduced payroll, froze overtime and took other major cost cutting steps as it faced "an expense challenge." J.C. Penney management has said the company would continue to be "aggressive" on cost cutting. In August, J.C. Penney said it plans to cut $250M in inventory by 2019. 3. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE: Mall-based retailers, including J.C. Penney, have been hurt by the increasing popularity of fast-fashion retailers like Zara, Forever 21 and H&M. The current promotional environment as well as tourism sales and a shift to e-commerce has been a focus for many retailers as of late. In October, Sears (SHLD) filed for bankruptcy. At the time, the company said it intends to stay in business, keeping open stores that are profitable. Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger noted that she believes J.C. Penney had the highest store overlap with Sears, K-Mart, and Sears Specialty Stores and said if Sears closes additional stores or engages in liquidation sales, retailers in the close trade areas could experience some short-term pressure. 4. OUTLOOK: J.C. Penney has struggled more than some of its peers, including Nordstrom (JWN) and Macy's (M), and in August, again cut its outlook for fiscal 2018 as it continued to deal with too much inventory. The company lowered its FY18 adjusted EPS view to ($1.00)-(80c) from (7c)-13c and narrowed its FY18 SSS guidance to approximately flat from previously reaffirmed guidance of flat to up 2%. The retailer forecast SSS "slightly negative" in Q3.

J.C. Penney price target lowered to 50c from $2 at Citi
Citi analyst Paul Lejuez said that J.C. Penney " finds itself in a very difficult position" following its Q2 report given that they lack a CEO and head merchant and are struggling at a time when peers are seeing improvement in their business. While he does not see near-term liquidity issues, Lejuez said there is not that much equity value given the company's high debt load. He lowered his price target on J.C. Penney shares to 50c from $2 and keeps a Sell rating on the stock.

Piper Jaffray keeps Neutral on J.C. Penney after CEO announcement
Piper Jaffray analyst Erinn Murphy maintains a Neutral rating on J.C. Penney with a $1.50 price target after Jill Soltau was named the company's new CEO. Soltau has direct insights on Penny's core consumer given the overlap of the consumer base in her prior roles, Murphy tells investors in a research note. The analyst, however, remains sidelined with respect to the shares given her longer-term view on department store retailing and her belief that inventory at Penny "is still in process of being right-sized."

Morgan Stanley sees near-term pressure, long-term gain for Penney if Sears folds
Amid recent headlines regarding Sears (SHLD) adding a restructuring expert and reportedly pursuing a bankruptcy filing, Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger noted that she believes J.C. Penney (JCP) had the highest store overlap with Sears, K-Mart, and Sears Specialty Stores within both a quarter mile and half mile radius. If Sears closes additional stores or engages in liquidation sales, retailers in the close trade areas could experience some short-term pressure, said Greenberger, who added that Sears has already been closing stores for years. In the medium to long-term, she expects J.C. Penney and other retailers in the respective trade areas to potentially benefit from these closures. Greenberger, who views Penney's near-term debt maturities as "manageable," keeps an Equal Weight rating and $1.50 price target on the shares.

Earnings commentary shows 'ample evidence' of hyperscale caution, says Longbow
Longbow analyst Joe Wittine said that Microsoft (MSFT) signaled along with its earnings report that growth in investments would moderate, Amazon (AMZN) highlighted a focus on driving data center efficiencies, Alphabet (GOOGL) is understood to be eh "the largest driver" of Seagate's (STX) lowered outlook and Apple (AAPL) expects FY19 capex of $14B, down from this year's $16.7B. Wittine sees all of this as "ample evidence of increased caution in the hyperscale investment cycle," which leads his to believe his Neutral ratings on both Seagate and Western Digital (WDC) remain appropriate.

Amazon selection of East Coast corridor for HQs makes sense, says Baird
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian noted that he'd predicted last October that Washington DC was "a slight favorite in the HQ2 sweepstakes," and he believes Amazon's (AMZN) selection of a second headquarters divided between Long Island City, NY and Arlington, Virginia "makes logical sense." He sees the primary motivation for the HQ split was talent availability, Sebastian added. The analyst maintains an Outperform rating and $2,100 price target on Amazon shares. Adding that "it did not receive the headlines of the HQ2 bidding process," Google (GOOGL) is said by the Wall Street Journal to be acquiring space for an additional 12-14K employees in New York, Sebastian also noted.

Amazon.com HQ2 locations 'make perfect sense' to Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba, who has a Buy rating and $2,200 price target on Amazon shares, was not surprised by Amazon's decision to split HQ2 between New York City and Northern Virginia, saying it "made perfect sense." The analyst noted that Amazon is eligible to receive nearly $2.1B in combined tax credits and cash grants, which likely played an important role in their decision. He also noted that Amazon having a local headquarters in Norther Virginia "further cements Amazon as the frontrunner for the Department of Defense's $10B Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure cloud computing contract."

Amazon's AWS operating income estimates likely conservative, says Evercore ISI
Evercore ISI analyst Anthony DiClemente kept his Outperform rating and $1,990 price target on Amazon.com, saying his deeper analysis of the company's AWS business earnings power over the longer term suggests that the consensus is "likely too conservative". The analyst states that his "dynamic model" indicates a pathway of 35% or greater operating margins by 2022 under "bullish, but still undemanding assumptions." DiClemente adds that the Street is giving Amazon "little credit for ongoing efficiency gains", only calling for about 100bps in operating margin expansion between 2018 and 2021.

Whirlpool price target lowered to $125 from $175 at Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Susan Maklari lowered her price target for Whirlpool (WHR) to $125 from $175 to reflect continued pressures from inflation and reduced overhead leverage. While international challenges continue to drag on results, pricing in North America could help provide a necessary offset, she contends. The analyst notes that Sears' (SHLD) Chapter 11 filing should result in few changes in long-term appliance trends, though there could be some near-term choppiness as 142 additional stores are closed and liquidated. Maklari reiterates an Outperform rating on Whirlpool shares.

Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba kept his Buy rating and $88 price target on Best Buy (BBY) after Sears Holdings (SHLD) declared bankruptcy over the weekend, saying it should be a "major beneficiary" from the latter's eventual "likely" liquidation. The analyst estimates the liquidation could add as much as 47c or 8.5% accretion to Best Buy FY19 EPS, with the company picking up a "fair share" on the consumer electronics side of the business as the "last man standing" in terms of dedicated national brick-and-mortar retailers.

MKM Partners analyst Roxanne Meyer kept her Neutral rating and $31 price target on L Brands (LB), saying that while the company reported better than expected same store sales in September and its Victoria's Secret brand comps turned positive, its visibility remains low. The analyst lists potential catalysts for L Brands being a "strong performance of pajamas in Q4 and the reintroduction of swimwear" at VS, but also points to her "newest concern" being the likelihood of a Sears (SHLD) liquidation, which would then reduce traffic at malls where the company also has retail presence.

Nordstrom upgraded to Outperform on positive data signals at Wedbush
As previously reported, Wedbush analyst Jen Redding upgraded Nordstrom to Outperform from Neutral and raised her price target on the shares to $75 from $55. The analyst also added shares of Nordstrom to the Wedbush Best Ideas List. Redding views new and unique limited distribution brands, localized market strategies, and a powerful Omnichannel platform as key drivers of revenue and gross margin expansion over the next several years, with diminishing investment headwinds in supply chain and e-commerce unlocking value for shareholders. The Wedbush Data Analytics suite for Nordstrom now draws from 12 of 13 weeks in Q3, and with all data signals positive across each product classification, she now has visibility into Nordstrom's turnaround story, and believes Nordstrom's current business trajectory is on track for 2018 to be an inflection point for profitable growth as generational investments scale and digital capabilities leverage.

Goldman starts Nordstrom with Conviction Buy, Macy's with Sell
Goldman Sachs analyst Alexandra Walvis initiated coverage of the Apparel & Accessories Retail sector with an Attractive coverage view. The analyst sees an "ongoing role for select best-in-class brick and mortar retailers" and feels "underappreciated business models" offer upside in select stocks. Walvis initiated coverage of Nordstrom (JWN) with a Buy rating and $73 price target and added the shares to her firm's Conviction List. The company offers a "full price business with a strong omnichannel offer and premium curated product," the analyst tells investors in a research note. On the other side, Walvis started Macy's (M) with a Sell rating and $33 price target. The company's strategic initiatives are insufficient to offset traffic headwinds for its portfolio of large, mall-based stores, Walvis contends. The analyst also put Buy ratings on Kohl's (KSS) and TJX (TJX), and Neutral ratings on Burlington Stores (BURL) and Ross Stores (ROST).

RBC capital analyst Scot Ciccarelli lowered his price target on Home Depot (HD) to $208 from $218 and Lowe's (LOW) to $110 from $123 to reflect the weakness in the U.S. housing stocks amid signs of softness in the broader housing market. The analyst notes that as mortgage rates rise, it is "completely reasonable to expect home sales to slow". Ciccarelli keeps his Outperform rating on both companies however, stating that the more critical aspects to their performance - existing home inventory levels, home price appreciation and PFRI, or Private Fixed Residential Investment, growth - all remain positive. The analyst adds that much of the housing market softness is in the new construction, where the companies have only modest exposure.
