Kohl's, Target set to thrive this holiday season, Barron's says

Store chains have been learning lessons from Amazon's (AMZN) success and investing in e-commerce fulfillment, and for stores that struggle now, the problem is them, not the economy or Amazon, Jack Hough writes in this week's edition of Barron's. To find likely winners, stock investors should be cautious of malls, and of stores with a shortage of unique merchandise, while being bullish on those with digital savvy, the publication notes. Kohl's (KSS) and Target (TGT) appear poised to outperform, and Home Depot (HD) and Tiffany (TIF) are worth their premium valuations, while Best Buy (BBY) has had a heroic run, but now faces especially difficult sales comparisons versus last year, Hough contends. TJX (TJX) could cool, too and the outlook is not promising for J.C. Penney (JCP) and L Brands (LB), he adds. Reference Link

On The Fly: Top five analyst upgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Starbucks (SBUX) upgraded to Buy from Hold at Argus with analyst John Staszak citing his expectations of "continued revenue growth and new store openings" for the company, forecasting 14% EPS growth and 15% in total returns over the next several years. 2. L Brands (LB) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Wells Fargo with analyst Ike Boruchow saying while he is not calling for an imminent inflection in the business, he now sees L Brands as the next retail turnaround story poised for positive shift in the "narrative" as the company appears set to begin embracing change with an "all options on the table" mentality. 3. Armstrong World (AWI) upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at BofA/Merrill with analyst John Lovallo saying Armstrong World deserves a higher multiple following the spin-off of Armstrong Flooring in April 2016 and is positive on the company's capital deployment strategy including buybacks, a recently initiated dividend, and tuck-in M&A. 4. Michael Kors (KORS) upgraded to Market Perform from Underperform at Bernstein with analyst Jamie Merriman citing valuation. 5. Crocs (CROX) upgraded to Neutral from Negative at Susquehanna. L Brands upgraded to Outperform on 2019 turnaround story at Wells Fargo
As previously reported, Wells Fargo analyst Ike Boruchow upgraded L Brands to Outperform from Market Perform and raised his price target for the shares to $55 from $30 on compelling 2019 turnaround story. While the analyst is not calling for an imminent inflection in the business, he now sees L Brands as the next retail turnaround story poised for positive shift in the "narrative" as the company appears set to begin embracing change with an "all options on the table" mentality. Specifically, the recent announcements to divest the money losing Bendel business illustrates a new focus on the portfolio, he contends. Moreover, Boruchow sees a meaningful opportunity for a re-rating in shares.

J.C. Penney downgraded to Sell from Hold at Argus
Argus analyst John Eade downgraded J.C. Penney to Sell, anticipating continued losses for the stock for the next two years while also warning that at a current share price below $2, the company is operating with a more elevated risk. The analyst states that while J.C Penney has made efforts to "restructure its merchandise assortment, close underperforming stores, and bolster its Omnichannel business, its operating results continue to deteriorate." Eade cites the company's margin deterioration coming from store closings, poor inventory management, and "steep discounting" intended to clear excess inventory. The analyst also sees J.C. Penney operating against "intense" competition from a wide range of retailers and suffering from weak mall traffic, while also facing a very expensive "arms race" to improve e-commerce capabilities.

Morgan Stanley sees near-term pressure, long-term gain for Penney if Sears folds
Amid recent headlines regarding Sears (SHLD) adding a restructuring expert and reportedly pursuing a bankruptcy filing, Morgan Stanley analyst Kimberly Greenberger noted that she believes J.C. Penney (JCP) had the highest store overlap with Sears, K-Mart, and Sears Specialty Stores within both a quarter mile and half mile radius. If Sears closes additional stores or engages in liquidation sales, retailers in the close trade areas could experience some short-term pressure, said Greenberger, who added that Sears has already been closing stores for years. In the medium to long-term, she expects J.C. Penney and other retailers in the respective trade areas to potentially benefit from these closures. Greenberger, who views Penney's near-term debt maturities as "manageable," keeps an Equal Weight rating and $1.50 price target on the shares.

The analyst expects the company to produce a strong set of results in the second half of the year thanks to rising average unit retail momentum as well as upturn in women's apparel. Best Buy sell-off on Amazon's Apple distribution overdone, says Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Anthony Chukumba kept his Buy rating and $88 price target on Best Buy (BBY), calling the 7.4% drop in its stock price on Friday "overdone". The analyst points to the news of Amazon (AMZN) starting to offer a much wider variety of Apple (AAPL) products, but believes that the impact on Best Buy is unlikely to be material. Chukumba cites Amazon's plans to sell products at the same "Apple-mandated prices as Best Buy", adding that a fair amount of Amazon's sales of Apple products will "cannibalize Apple unauthorized sales that were previously taking place on its website".

Best Buy status as 'last man standing' not enough to support valuation, says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Brandon Fletcher notes that news reports suggest that Amazon (AMZN) has made a deal for a larger and more first-party controlled top-tier brand assortments. The analyst suspects Amazon may be in line for a higher allocation on new products if the relationships deepen with top vendors. Best Buy (BBY) has lived on very large allocations of new products because some customers need some help in stores and some product makers need some help in promotion of new releases, he contends. With smartphone launches covered intensely by social media networks and traditional media, it was never clear to Fletcher how long that Best Buy would defend the promotional aspect, leaving it playing only a shrinking role of support for a subset of customers who still want some traditional retail Service. However, the analyst believes that group is aging out and Best Buy's protected status as the "last man standing" in electronics may not be enough to support the high valuations.

As part of this research note, Sanderson also keeps his Buy rating on Spotify (SPOT) but lowers its price target to $200 from $245, applying a 25-times forward earnings multiple in rolling out his valuation to 2022, with added currency related pressure against the "much less contentious" expected renewal rates in 2019.

Amazon shares offer 'opportunity for material appreciation,' says Piper Jaffray
The downdraft in technology names has driven valuations to "opportunistic levels for certain stocks," Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson tells investors in a research note partially titled "Champagne Stock on a Beer Budget." In particular, Amazon "presents an opportunity for material appreciation in the coming 12-24 months," says the analyst. His analysis of Amazon's valuation suggests the company's core retail business is trading in-line with low single digit growth brick and mortar retailers. While some investors were disappointed with Amazon's revenue growth deceleration in Q3, Olson says he's encouraged by potential for ongoing margin expansion and bottom line upside. Amazon has beaten Q4 operating income guidance by an average of 94% in the past three years, suggesting that a typical beat would exceed where consensus Q4 expectations were going into the Q3 report, says the analyst. He reiterates an Overweight rating on the shares with a $2,050 price target. Amazon closed yesterday down 2%, or $32.16, to $1,599.01.
