Consumers spent $1.53B on console games in October, SuperData says

"Consumers spent $1.53B digitally on console games in October, up 80% year-over-year and setting a new record for the platform. Growth was underpinned by the strong launches of Call of Duty and Red Dead Redemption 2, as well as a favorable comparison against a nascent Fortnite last October. Specifically, full game download revenue surpassed $1 B for the first month ever," SuperData said in a blog posting. Companies in the digital games space include: Take-Two (TTWO), Electronic Arts (EA), Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Microsoft (MSFT), Sony Corporation (SNE). and Nintendo (NTDOY). Reference Link

Jefferies says Take-Two upside thesis playing out, boosts target to $155
Jefferies analyst Timothy O'Shea raised his price target for Take-Two Interactive Software to $155 from $150 saying his upside thesis appears to be playing out with Red Dead Redemption 2 "poised to deliver significant upside to estimates." The game is selling way faster than expected, and Red Dead is not cannibalizing GTA Online, O'Shea tells investors in a post-earnings research note titled "Giddy Up! Red Dead Redemption 2 Poised to Deliver Upside." The analyst keeps a Buy rating on Take-Two.

Piper lays out favorite Consumer stocks to own into holiday season

Morgan Stanley highlights four tech stocks to buy following recent pullback
Morgan Stanley analysts Katy Huberty, Keith Weiss, Brian Nowak, Joe Moore, James Faucette and Brian Essex collaborated on a report addressing technology stocks following the recent market pullback, contending the fact that technology sector concentration remains near all-time highs suggests that its "probably too early" to buy the sector broadly. However, they highlight four stocks - Alphabet (GOOGL), Take-Two Interactive (TTWO), Microsoft (MSFT) and Xilinx (XLNX) - for which they believe the pullback is not fundamentally driven and the companies have strong secular tailwinds. The firm's analyst call these four stocks their "highest conviction" names and maintain Overweight ratings on all four.

Atlantic Equities sees limited catalysts for Electronic Arts, downgrades to Neutral
As previously reported, Atlantic Equities analyst Kunaal Malde downgraded Electronic Arts to Neutral from Overweight after the company reported Q2 results and maintained FY19 guidance, but with a weighting more to upfront sales than originally expected, which he said raises concerns that the mix shift to recurring revenue lines could be fading. Live Services slowed again, contrary to our prior expectations, added Malde. Given that the stock is down about 35% from its highs, he thinks there may be limited further downside, but he also sees few positive near-term catalysts, Malde tells investors. He lowered his price target on EA shares to $110 from $140.

Electronic Arts price target lowered to $135 from $157 at MKM Partners

The analyst also keeps his Buy rating, stating that the stock is hurt by an "overly bearish sentiment" while outlining the company's potential catalysts coming from Live Services performance, Battlefield V selling season, and the "revitalized mobile growth" from the December launch of "Command & Conquer".

Electronic Arts price target lowered to $115 from $132 at Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Andrew Uerkwitz lowered his price target for Electronic Arts to $115 from $132, while reiterating an Outperform rating on the shares. That said, the company faces near-term execution challenges and competitive pressure, which warrants a lower multiple than peers, he contends.

Clovis (CLVS) downgraded to Neutral from Overweight at JPMorgan with analyst Cory Kasimov saying the company's Q3 report was "clearly surprising and disappointing," as Rubraca sales of $22.8M fell well below consensus of $31.3M and represented a sequential decline versus $23.8M in Q2. 5. Activision Blizzard price target cut to $81 from $100 at Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter maintained an Outperform rating on Activision Blizzard but cut his price target to $81 from $100 after the company reported Q3 results roughly in line with expectations. In a research note to investors, Pachter said that despite the quarter, management did not pass through any of the Q3 upside to the full year guidance. Activision Blizzard, which is on the firm's Best Ideas List, could deliver outsized earnings growth by optimizing King's untapped ad opportunity and monetizing its Overwatch League, he adds.

Activision Blizzard price target lowered to $72 from $80 at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak lowered his price target on Activision Blizzard shares to $72 from $80, stating that the company's choice not to pass through its Q3 beat to full-year guidance despite strong performance from "Call of Duty" speaks to the challenges facing core franchises such as Destiny, Overwatch and Hearthstone. Activision Blizzard now has fewer near-term outperforming properties than it has over the past two years, which speaks to recent execution issues, particularly at Blizzard, Nowak tells investors. However, he remains positive on the company's pipeline and "call options" such King advertising and esports and keeps an Overweight rating on Activision Blizzard shares.

Activision Blizzard price target lowered to $65 from $81 at SunTrust

Thornton further notes that Activision Blizzard's Q3 results were weighed down by underperforming Destiny 2, but that the performance of its flagship Call of Duty installment Black Ops 4 has "units, players, and hours tracking above Black Ops 3".

Morgan Stanley says publishers in 'win-win' situation as consoles move to cloud
Morgan Stanley analyst Brian Nowak sees changes coming to the $53B global console gaming market as the business model transitions toward subscription pricing and cloud delivery. The transition will lead to 2% CAGR console gaming revenue growth from 2017-2025, but gross profit growth accelerating to 6%, Nowak estimates. He believes game publishers such as Activision Blizzard (ATVI), Electronic Arts (EA) and Take-Two (TTWO) will likely need to partner and bundle content to drive material consumer adoption, but he sees them being in a "win-win" position, because even if the console makers or other aggregators drive the cloud transition, the leading publishers can still benefit from expansion in the player base, Nowak tells investors. While console players Microsoft (MSFT) and Sony (SNE) have the most at risk from these changes, they are also positioned best to build and grow game subscription services, Nowak added.

September NPD video game software sales dropped 8%, says Piper Jaffray
Overall September NPD video game software sales were down 8% year-over-year despite launches of strong franchises, Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson tells investors in a research note. AWS has long runway for future growth, says Oppenheimer
Oppenheimer analyst Timothy Horan says that Amazon Web Services (AMZN), AWS, continues to move up the stack improving Security, AI/ML, IoT, Database services and bundling in with infrastructure to maintain prices of legacy services. The analyst expects a number of new features and tools for Lambda, Aurora and Greengrass. He also sees Amazon discussing UC&C, gaming and blockchain. AWS kicked off its hybrid offering with its VMware (VMW) partnership and Kubernetes support, but it still lacks the full stack that Microsoft (MSFT) has for hybrid deployments-which are critical for enterprise customers that want to capture the benefits of the cloud while still maintaining on-premise datacenters for sensitive workloads, he contends. Overall, Horan believes demand remains strong, and thinks only about 25% of total enterprise workloads have moved to the cloud, which gives AWS a long runway for future growth.

Nvidia can selloff near-term on graphics commentary, says Citi
Citi analyst Atif Malik says his recent supply chain checks indicate discrete graphics gaming demand is expected to remain sluggish thru the September quarter due to a "sharp decline" in mining related demand on falling cryptocurrency prices, channel distributors and partners waiting for Nvidia's (NVDA) new Turing gaming card launch in the October quarter, and weak gaming console sales at Microsoft (MSFT) offset by the Nintendo (NTDOY) Switch. The analyst lowered his July and October quarter estimates for Nvidia to bring them in-line with consensus. He thinks the stock can selloff in the near-term on weaker than expected graphics commentary from TSMC (TSM), who reports on July 19, and AMD (AMD), who reports on July 25. Malik, however, keeps a Buy rating on Nvidia with a $300 price target. He believes his long-term thesis on the shares remains intact.
