JPMorgan sees minimal financial impact to Apple from Germany injunction
JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee sees a minimal financial impact to Apple (AAPL) after the District Court of Munich in Germany issued a permanent injunction against the company relative to the infringement of a Qualcomm (QCOM) hardware patent and has restricted Apple from selling specific iPhones in the country. The analyst estimates that the financial impact of Apple's stop-sale is likely minimal given that Germany accounts for only 3% of its total global shipments. Further, Apple owns only 15 stores in the whole of Germany, Chatterjee tells investors in a research note. He would expect the impact to be less than 1M shipments on an annualized basis. The analyst keeps an Overweight rating on Apple.

German ruling may increase pressure on Apple to settle with Qualcomm, says Argus
Argus analyst Jim Kelleher said the recent German patent ruling, coupled with an earlier Chinese ruling, could increase pressure on Apple (AAPL) to settle its legal fight with Qualcomm (QCOM), adding that he believes Qualcomm being willing to consider changes to its percentage-of-device-price revenue model is "the one thing that could push a settlement forward." The analyst, who sees it as only a matter of time before this royalty model is adjusted, keeps a Buy rating on Qualcomm shares.

Wedbush lays out Apple investor 'Christmas wish list' for 2019
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said that sentiment about Apple (AAPL) "is as negative as we have seen in many years" with the stock down over 30% since early November, though he "vehemently" disagrees with those who are pricing in a "meaningful apocalyptic iPhone unit deceleration not just for 2019 but possibly for 2020." With Apple investors looking toward 2019, Ives laid out his "Top 10 holiday wish list for Apple investors," which includes FY19 iPhone units shipped topping 200M; China consumer iPhone upgrades for FY19 hitting 30M; settling the Qualcomm (QCOM) patent issue "once and for all"; services business hits revenue over $45B in FY19; more transparency and metrics around the services business; a meaningful acquisition of a major content player; announcing an accelerated buyback program; lowering prices on some OLED iPhone models; the China trade war being settled in early 2019; and Apple announcing a strategic partnership with Tesla (TSLA). Ives keeps an Outperform rating and $275 price target on Apple shares.

FTC case could lead to settlement between Qualcomm and Apple, says Canaccord
Canaccord analyst T. Michael Walkley said the upcoming FTC case is an important step in the process towards Qualcomm (QCOM) and Apple (AAPL) reaching a licensing settlement. The analyst noted that in a partial summary judgment, it required Qualcomm to license cellular standard-essential patents to the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Standards, presenting potential risks to its licensing practices. Walkley maintains his Buy rating and $75 price target on Qualcomm shares.

RBC Capital analyst Amit Daryanani nudged his price target on Jabil to $30 rating after its "strong" Q1 results driven by a "combination of better than expected performance in both its DMS and EMS segments" and the upside in new business wins. The analyst also cites the company's raised FY19 revenue guidance forecast based on the management's expectations of "healthcare, packaging, automotive, 5G wireless and cloud contribute meaningfully" to its top line. Daryanani keeps his Sector Perform rating on Jabil, noting that its valuation is in line with its 10-year average trading multiple of 10-times forward 12-month earnings.

Citi analyst Jim Suva lowered his price target for Jabil (JBL) to $24 and keeps a Sell rating on the shares. The analyst adjusted his valuation of the stock to reflect the recent market decline. His Sell thesis is based on revenue and margin pressure from incremental suppliers getting into the iPhone supply chain. Jabil's customer concentration with Apple (AAPL) gives the company limited bargaining power when demand slows down and/or when there is new competition in the supply chain, Suva tells investors in a research note.

Arya, who also upgraded Intel (INTC) to Buy this morning, forecasts total semiconductor industry sales to decelerate in 2019 and still expects enterprise, data center and parts of networking infrastructure to perform better than cyclical sectors such as industrial, automotive and smartphones. In addition to cutting his estimates for all three downgraded stocks, he lowered his price target on TI shares to $105 from $117, cut his target on Analog Devices to $96 from $112 and trimmed his target on Maxim to $57 from $58.

AMD addition to Nasdaq-100 a 'small near-term positive', says RBC Capital
RBC Capital analyst Mitch Steves notes the addition of AMD (AMD) to the Nasdaq-100 index announced late on Friday, which also contained the inclusion of lululemon (LULU), NetApp (NTAP), United Continental Holdings (UAL), VeriSign (VRSN) and Willis Towers Watson (WLTW) and the subtraction of Express Scripts Holding (ESRX), Hologic (HOLX), Qurate Retail (QRTEA), Shire (SHPG), Seagate Technology (STX) and Vodafone Plc (VOD). The analyst believes that the change - which will become effective before the market open on December 24th - could act as a "small near-term positive" for AMD shares, even though it does not change its fundamentals. Longer term, the analyst keeps his Outperform rating and $34 price target on AMD, but warns that the company is faced with a crypto currency downdraft in the Gaming segment and that he is also cautious on the hyperscale spending trends next year which he estimates in the low single digits. Steves adds that the notable investor debate is also taking place around the AMD server average selling prices, which he sees coming in around $5,400 - the higher end of the more bullish forecasts of $5K-$6K vs. the bears' estimate around $4K.

Seagate, Western Digital resumed with Hold ratings at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Sidney Ho resumed coverage of both Seagate Technology (STX) and Western Digital (WDC) with Hold ratings, and price targets of $42 and $45, respectively. The analyst said in a note partially titled "Cloudy near term, Cloud is also the future" that while hard disk drive, or HDD, is a mature industry, several interesting trends have emerged. First, nearline HDDs that are suited for mass storage in cloud data centers could drive 60%+ of the industry revenue by 2022 with above industry average margins. Second, technology innovations in the next 5-10 years could continue to drive cost improvements in the HDD industry. Third, while declining NAND flash memory prices have led to rising adoption of solid state drives, or SSDs, the cannibalization focuses on PCs and mission-critical enterprise applications, while nearline HDDs appear to be more immune. The analyst concluded that "while HDD revenues appear to be on a slow decline, changing mix will likely drive better profitability."

Susquehanna sees Mellanox as top Semiconductors M&A target for 2019
Susquehanna analyst Christopher Rolland said he likes secular themes for the semiconductor group in 2019. He prefers themes like A.I. as well as industry M&A targets. The analyst noted handset unit growth is slowing heading into 2019 and there are automotive headwinds, tariffs, and risks to PC shipments, which are causing a shift in interest. Nvidia, AMD estimates lowered at RBC Capital on more cautious gaming view
RBC Capital analyst Mitch Steves lowered his price target on Nvidia (NVDA) to $200 from $230 and also lowered his FY19 revenue forecast on Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to $7.29B from $7.41B. The analyst says the revisions reflect his observation of a reduction in average selling prices for GPUs of both companies in the secondary market, particularly for Nvidia's GTX 1070 gaming chip. Steves warns that the company may not be able to discern whether the lower prices come as a result of reduced demand in gaming or cryptocurrency related activity, but states that his expectations for Gaming sector are "conservative". The analyst also expects both Nvidia and AMD stocks to remain range bound until the air-pocket in gaming has passed over the near term. Longer term, Steves keeps his Outperform rating on Nvidia amid the sales mix shift toward Data Center revenues, which is seeing traction with the expected annualized growth. For AMD, the analyst also maintains an Outperform rating stating that its long-term investment story remains unchanged. In Q1, Steves sees AMD catalysts in the form a new server product with competitive performance and price relative to the current Intel (INTC) offerings.

Nvidia's inventory overhang persists, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst John Pitzer says that despite the January 15 intro of Nvidia's RTX 2060, checks suggest excess graphics inventory will likely persist into April quarter. While checks suggest progress on high-end GTX, 1060 inventory remains elevated due to slower demand, and pricing, he contends. With the intro of RTX 2060 at a compelling ASP and performance, Pitzer would expect 1060 ASPs declines and inventory digestion to accelerate. The analyst views April quarter as the likely gaming trough quarter over quarter and year over year, with quarter over quarter growth resuming in July quarter and year over year growth in January quarter of 2020. He continues to see a favorable risk/reward and reiterates an Outperform rating and $225 price target on the shares.

Mizuho cuts AMD target to $30 from $33, Nvidia target to $230 from $245
Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh lowered his price target for AMD (AMD) to $30 from $33 and for Nvidia (NVDA) to $230 from $245. The analyst, who keeps Buy rating on both stocks, is taking an updated look at graphics processing unit trends post his November 28 note highlighting the first pricing stabilization and rebound since the peak of the crypto-related bubble earlier this year. Rakesh admits that he's not seeing "any further significant uptick in pricing" since that note. However, he believes price stabilization remains in AMD and Nvidia GPUs. Revenue at Taiwan GPU component suppliers such as Gigabyte/MSI, while declining, are trending better than last year with Chinese New Year ahead, Rakesh tells investors in a research note. Further, he believes a potential launch and pricing of a mid-range ray tracing RTX 2060 could drive better gaming sales.
