Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. General Motors (GM) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at BMO Capital with analyst Richard Carlson citing a "brighter spotlight" being placed on the GM Cruise model in 2019 leading to more appropriate value being priced into the shares. 2. Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), Adobe (ADBE), and Salesforce (CRM) were upgraded to Buy from Hold at Pivotal Research. 3. Citi (C) upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Macquarie with analyst David Konrad saying despite macro uncertainties, he sees Citi's stock as compelling due to his expectations for improving performance, continued operating leverage and credit risk concerns that he views as overdone. 4. Micron (MU) upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at BMO Capital with analyst Ambrish Srivastava citing valuation. 5. Micron upgraded to Outperform at BMO Capital on valuation
As reported earlier, BMO Capital analyst Ambrish Srivastava upgraded Micron to Outperform from Market Perform and also raised his price target to $50 from $32. The analyst contends that while the fundamentals on the stock will "likely get worse before they get better", he sees the share prices as having bottomed based on valuation trading close to book value. Srivastava adds that Micron has likely closed the margin gap relative to its larger rivals from 9 points to 6 points in a bid to become a "structurally more profitable company".

Needham stays Hold on Micron, says Samsung confirmed weakening outlook
Needham analyst Rajvindra Gill keeps a Hold rating on Micron Technology (MU) after Samsung (SSNLF) lowered its preliminary outlook for Q4. Similar to Micron, Samsung cited excess inventory at its hyperscaler customers and weaker than expected demand in smartphones, Gill tells investors in a research note. Samsung also reiterated a similar view of Micron's that it expects a second half of 2019 rebound driven by new central processing unit architectures and launches of new smartphones, adds the analyst. Gill, however, believes visibility into the second half of 2019 remains limited. Based on industry conversations, he thinks excess inventory at hypersacalers will persist for at least another 3-6 months. Further, the slowing Chinese economy makes him cautious on overall demand conditions in the first half of the year. As such, Gill says that while Micron is trading at historical low valuation multiples, the stock has further downside if demand conditions worsen. Shares of Micron are down 3%, or $1.11, to $32.89 in morning trading.

Morgan Stanley bullishness on Ambarella computer vision opportunity still intact
Morgan Stanley analyst Joseph Moore said a large miss in Ambarella's consumer business, an auto program delay and trade tensions in surveillance will all likely test investor patience, but he remains bullish as his enthusiasm for the new computer vision opportunity has not waned. He thinks the company is hitting its milestones and still expects the company to be able to talk more specifically about autonomous driving customers later this year, Moore tells investors. While his view of the upside has not changed, the downside protection in the event that the company is less successful transitioning to computer vision has declined, added Moore, who keeps an Overweight rating on Ambarella shares but lowered his price target to $50 from $58.

However, he keeps a Buy rating on the stock, citing his positive view on the longer term prospects of Ambarella's computer vision SoCs. Management stated that the CV family is progressing in line with previous expectations and they expect initial CV revenue in the first half of next year, noted Cassidy.

Nvidia, AMD estimates lowered at RBC Capital on more cautious gaming view
RBC Capital analyst Mitch Steves lowered his price target on Nvidia (NVDA) to $200 from $230 and also lowered his FY19 revenue forecast on Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to $7.29B from $7.41B. The analyst says the revisions reflect his observation of a reduction in average selling prices for GPUs of both companies in the secondary market, particularly for Nvidia's GTX 1070 gaming chip. Steves warns that the company may not be able to discern whether the lower prices come as a result of reduced demand in gaming or cryptocurrency related activity, but states that his expectations for Gaming sector are "conservative". The analyst also expects both Nvidia and AMD stocks to remain range bound until the air-pocket in gaming has passed over the near term. Longer term, Steves keeps his Outperform rating on Nvidia amid the sales mix shift toward Data Center revenues, which is seeing traction with the expected annualized growth. For AMD, the analyst also maintains an Outperform rating stating that its long-term investment story remains unchanged. In Q1, Steves sees AMD catalysts in the form a new server product with competitive performance and price relative to the current Intel (INTC) offerings.

Susquehanna sees Mellanox as top Semiconductors M&A target for 2019

Mizuho cuts AMD target to $30 from $33, Nvidia target to $230 from $245
Mizuho analyst Vijay Rakesh lowered his price target for AMD (AMD) to $30 from $33 and for Nvidia (NVDA) to $230 from $245. The analyst, who keeps Buy rating on both stocks, is taking an updated look at graphics processing unit trends post his November 28 note highlighting the first pricing stabilization and rebound since the peak of the crypto-related bubble earlier this year. Rakesh admits that he's not seeing "any further significant uptick in pricing" since that note. However, he believes price stabilization remains in AMD and Nvidia GPUs. Revenue at Taiwan GPU component suppliers such as Gigabyte/MSI, while declining, are trending better than last year with Chinese New Year ahead, Rakesh tells investors in a research note. Further, he believes a potential launch and pricing of a mid-range ray tracing RTX 2060 could drive better gaming sales.

Nvidia's inventory overhang persists, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst John Pitzer says that despite the January 15 intro of Nvidia's RTX 2060, checks suggest excess graphics inventory will likely persist into April quarter. While checks suggest progress on high-end GTX, 1060 inventory remains elevated due to slower demand, and pricing, he contends. With the intro of RTX 2060 at a compelling ASP and performance, Pitzer would expect 1060 ASPs declines and inventory digestion to accelerate. The analyst views April quarter as the likely gaming trough quarter over quarter and year over year, with quarter over quarter growth resuming in July quarter and year over year growth in January quarter of 2020. He continues to see a favorable risk/reward and reiterates an Outperform rating and $225 price target on the shares.

Longbow predicts Q2 updside, guidance raise coming from Garmin
Longbow analyst Joe Wittine said his survey of aftermarket aviation dealers and distributors points to a positive inflection in Q2, driven in large part by ADS-B activity, and he also notes that early "fenix 5 Plus" search data points look good. Given his checks in the aviation and outdoor markets, as well as still-improving indicators for fitness, Wittine expects Q2 sales and EPS upside from Garmin and predicts the company will raise its 2018 guidance. Sonos initiated with an Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty started Sonos (SONO) with an Equal Weight rating and $20 price target, stating that she believes timely launches and consumer receptivity to new products will be the most important drivers of earnings growth. She thinks the multiple will contract similar to how Fitbit (FIT) and GoPro's (GPRO) did after their initial product missteps if Sonos' new products fail to meet expectations, but the stock could trade closer to companies such as Logitech (LOGI) and Garmin (GRMN) if new products outperform. Given this wide risk/reward, she would prefer to await evidence of Beam or other new products beating forecasts, Huberty tells investors in her initiation note.

Garmin wearables segment to top estimates in Q3, says Longbow
Longbow analyst Joe Wittine raised his Garmin price target to $75 from $72 and kept his Buy rating, saying his sell-through indicators suggest that the company's wearables sales will exceed consensus forecasts. The analyst is positive on Garmin's Fitness segment, raising his forecast based on the web search data in the quarter, and also sees the Outdoor segment results above the Street in spite of the channel fill timing related trim. Wittine believes that Garmin can deliver sales and earnings beats through 2019 thanks to "peak ADS-B installs, further expansion in advanced wearables, and some narrowing in Auto declines".

Stifel lowers analog and IoT semiconductor estimates on broad-based slowdown
Stifel analyst Tore Svanberg said he expects Q3 to come in essentially in line with expectations for analog and IoT semiconductor companies, but sees their Q4 outlooks being impacted by a potential supply-chain correction or slower end-market growth. He now believes 2019 will now be a down year, projecting a 2%-4% contraction, and sees companies aligned with strong secular growth stories as poised to outperform their peers. Svanberg identifies Monolithic Power (MPWR), Silicon Labs (SLAB), Semtech (SMTC) and Quantenna (QTNA) as among the companies he sees being aligned with strong secular growth stories. In conjunction with the sector preview, Svanberg lowered his price targets on Monolithic Power, Silicon Labs, Alpha & Omega (AOSL), Macom (MTSI), Maxim Integrated (MXIM), MaxLinear (MXL), NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), O2Micro (OIIM), Power Integrations (POWI) and Texas Instruments (TXN).

Skyworks, Qorvo among semi names with most Apple exposure, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Craig Hettenbach maintains his Cautious view on the Semiconductors sector, telling investors that the sizeable iPhone miss in China and a weaker China PMI reading this week provide further evidence of a strong downward bias in "the most important growth region for semis." He sees more reasons for investors to reduce exposure to semis, rather than add, ahead of what he expects to be a challenging earnings season, Hettenbach noted. In terms of exposure to Apple (AAPL), he estimates Skyworks (SWKS) has 45% exposure, followed by Qorvo (QRVO) at about 35% and Broadcom (AVGO) at 15%- 20%. Beyond the companies with the greatest Apple exposure, Hettenbach also highlight risks to broad-based suppliers such as Texas Instruments (TXN), Amphenol (APH), ON Semiconductor (ON), NXP Semiconductors (NXPI), Analog Devices (ADI) and Cypress Semiconductor (CY), calling out ON as his top Underweight idea.

Morgan Stanley says auto semiconductor estimates still too high
Morgan Stanley analyst Craig Hettenbach sees pressure building toward an eventual reset in the first half of 2019 for semiconductor companies that have so far characterized their automotive business as "stable." He believes estimates are still too high in autos and notes that his 2019 EPS estimate is 15% below the Street for ON Semiconductor (ON) and 5% below consensus for Sensata (ST). Having braced for a greater degree of negativity, Hettenbach was surprised that commentary on autos was mixed during earnings season, and he sees companies that have been slower to reset expectations being more susceptible to order reductions as suppliers and OEMs adjust to weaker than expected production, he tells investors. The analyst reiterates his Underweight ratings on both ON and Sensata.

Seagate, Western Digital resumed with Hold ratings at Deutsche Bank
Deutsche Bank analyst Sidney Ho resumed coverage of both Seagate Technology (STX) and Western Digital (WDC) with Hold ratings, and price targets of $42 and $45, respectively. The analyst said in a note partially titled "Cloudy near term, Cloud is also the future" that while hard disk drive, or HDD, is a mature industry, several interesting trends have emerged. First, nearline HDDs that are suited for mass storage in cloud data centers could drive 60%+ of the industry revenue by 2022 with above industry average margins. Second, technology innovations in the next 5-10 years could continue to drive cost improvements in the HDD industry. Third, while declining NAND flash memory prices have led to rising adoption of solid state drives, or SSDs, the cannibalization focuses on PCs and mission-critical enterprise applications, while nearline HDDs appear to be more immune. The analyst concluded that "while HDD revenues appear to be on a slow decline, changing mix will likely drive better profitability."

AMD addition to Nasdaq-100 a 'small near-term positive', says RBC Capital

The analyst believes that the change - which will become effective before the market open on December 24th - could act as a "small near-term positive" for AMD shares, even though it does not change its fundamentals. Longer term, the analyst keeps his Outperform rating and $34 price target on AMD, but warns that the company is faced with a crypto currency downdraft in the Gaming segment and that he is also cautious on the hyperscale spending trends next year which he estimates in the low single digits. Steves adds that the notable investor debate is also taking place around the AMD server average selling prices, which he sees coming in around $5,400 - the higher end of the more bullish forecasts of $5K-$6K vs. the bears' estimate around $4K.
