Apple should buy Nintendo, Barron's says

With Apple (AAPL) shares down nearly a third in the past three months and the financial guidance bombshell earlier this year, the burning question turns to what the company can do to spark a turnaround, Tae Kim writes in this week's edition of Barron's. Apple has hinted that it will act boldly to revive its fortunes, and while flashy takeover candidates like Netflix (NFLX) and Tesla (TSLA) often get mentioned, their elevated valuations and cash burn do not match Apple's love for a high profit margins and financial conservatism, the publication notes. The best fit for the iPhone maker may be Nintendo (NTDOY), as both companies have similar attributes like mountains of cash, gushing profits, beloved brands, loyal customers, and sticky ecosystems of software and services, Barron's adds. Nintendo upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Masaru Sugiyama upgraded Nintendo to Buy with a reduced price target of 47,000 yen. The earnings structure of Switch is "superior" to Wii and its earnings contribution is "just getting started," Sugiyama tells investors in a research note.

Sony appeared to be video game hardware winner on Black Friday, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter notes that each of the four game retailers he tracked, namely Best Buy (BBY), GameStop (GME), Target (TGT) and Walmart (WMT) offered the Marvel's Spider-Man PlayStation 4 Bundle that included a slim PS4 with a 1TB hard drive and Sony's (SNE) Marvel's Spider-Man for $199.99, as well as the Microsoft's (MSFT) Xbox One S Minecraft Creators Bundle that included an Xbox One S with a 1TB hard drive, a Minecraft full game download, the Starter Pack, the Creators Pack, and 1,000 Minecoins for $199.99. Nintendo's (NTDOY) primary hardware offering was less compelling given that it was priced at the console's standard MSRP, he adds. The only sell-out that the analyst saw over Black Friday was the primary PS4 deal. Pachter expects the Black Friday deals to eventually translate into permanent price cuts for the base PS4 and Xbox One, possibly by this Christmas.

GameStop strong hardware sales offset pre-owned and software decline, says Baird
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian kept his Outperform rating and $14 price target on GameStop (GME) after its "in-line" Q2 results, where "strong new hardware sales and improving Tech Brands segment profitability" offset the declines in the pre-owned and software segments. The analyst adds that the revenue beat was driven by the ongoing demand for Nintendo (NTDOY) Switch and Xbox One consoles, while noting that the comps decline of -0.5% was better than the expected -3.7% decrease.

Nvidia can selloff near-term on graphics commentary, says Citi
Citi analyst Atif Malik says his recent supply chain checks indicate discrete graphics gaming demand is expected to remain sluggish thru the September quarter due to a "sharp decline" in mining related demand on falling cryptocurrency prices, channel distributors and partners waiting for Nvidia's (NVDA) new Turing gaming card launch in the October quarter, and weak gaming console sales at Microsoft (MSFT) offset by the Nintendo (NTDOY) Switch. The analyst lowered his July and October quarter estimates for Nvidia to bring them in-line with consensus. He thinks the stock can selloff in the near-term on weaker than expected graphics commentary from TSMC (TSM), who reports on July 19, and AMD (AMD), who reports on July 25. Malik, however, keeps a Buy rating on Nvidia with a $300 price target. He believes his long-term thesis on the shares remains intact.

Tesla selloff yesterday on price cuts is justified, says Deutsche Bank
Yesterday's negative stock reaction to Tesla's U.S. price cuts is justified, as the move should put pressure on consensus 2019 earnings and free cash flow estimates, and raises "real questions" about the elasticity of demand for the company's vehicles, Deutsche Bank analyst Emmanuel Rosner tells investors in a research note. The analyst, however, believes Tesla's near-term news flow could be more supportive, as he expects "robust" Q4 earnings and does not see the need for a capital raise. Further, he points out that the current stock price leaves some larger upside potential to his $375 price target. Rosner, nonetheless, keeps a Hold rating on Tesla shares.

Bull/bear tug of war continues into Tesla's Q1, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives maintained an Outperform rating and $440 price target on Tesla, telling investors in a research note that the company has started to turn the corner on Model 3 production, demand looks "healthy" into 2019 and beyond, and says the financial model is poised to generate improved profitability/cash flow, putting the risk of a capital raise in the background for now. However, Ives cautions that there is no room for major production errors or another distraction from CEO Elon Musk and others. While Tesla remains a "rollercoaster ride," Ives believes European deliveries hitting the ground in Q1 and a steady production ramp out of Fremont remain key variables for the bulls/bears to debate heading into a "pivotal" earnings report and guidance.

Morgan Stanley 'unconvinced' on Tesla long-term future in China after Musk trip
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said it is notable that Elon Musk, "one of the most well-known U.S. CEOs," physically traveled to China and he thinks Tesla may have some negotiating power to secure more favorable, or at least "less unfavorable," trading parameters for the import and sale of its electric vehicles in China while the Shanghai Gigafactory is being ramped up. Tesla's success in securing improved trade terms with China could be worth "many tens of thousands" in Model 3 volume over the next 12 months and significantly impact its ability to make or beat consensus forecasts, said Jonas, who noted that he remains "unconvinced of Tesla's long-term future in China." Jonas keeps an Equal Weight rating and $291 price target on Tesla shares.

JPMorgan cuts Tesla target to $220, keeps Underweight rating on shares
JPMorgan analyst Ryan Brinkman lowered his price target for Tesla to $220 from $225 after the company announced yesterday that Q4 deliveries tracked 90,700 vehicles, softer than his firm's estimate of 93,000. Most closely watched Model 3 deliveries totaled 63,150 in Q4 versus the consensus of 63,698 and JPMorgan's estimate of 65,000, Brinkman tells investors in a research note. Further, the announced vehicle price cuts suggest soft underlying demand, adds the analyst. He cut his Q4 earnings per share estimate for Tesla to 77c from 93c and 2019 estimate to $3.35 from $3.95. With "material downside" to his December 2019 price target of $220, Brinkman keeps an Underweight rating on Tesla.

Raymond James upgrades Netflix to Strong Buy, sees material profitability ahead
As previously reported, Raymond James analyst Justin Patterson upgraded Netflix to Strong Buy from Outperform and raised his price target on the stock to $450 from $435. Netflix is approaching a profit inflection, as the company's front-loaded headcount investments will be leveraged and lead to an operating margin inflection, contends Patterson. His survey work shows Netflix's traction in film is helping it gain share against linear TV and he sees meaningful potential for Netflix to succeed in film, which Patterson believes should aid subscriber growth, retention and pricing power, he added. Last night, UBS analyst Eric Sheridan also upgraded Netflix to Buy from Neutral and raised his price target for the shares to $410 from $400.

Netflix price target lowered to $430 from $475 at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne lowered his price target on Netflix (NFLX) shares to $430 from $475 as he factored in his "modestly lower" view on long-term margins and the broader de-rating of the stock in the market. While he currently forecasts 27M global paid net adds in 2019, Swinburne has tempered his 2019 ARPU growth view, noting that Netflix has not implemented broad price increases as of yet. He still believes Netflix's long-term pricing power remains intact, though he is now taking a more conservative approach to ARPU growth in emerging markets longer term. Swinburne keeps an Overweight rating on Netflix, citing the nearly $500B global TV market it has the potential to address and his view that while many traditional TV studio owners, like Disney (DIS), will pivot to streaming, most likely will not.

Fly Intel: Top five analyst upgrades
Catch up on today's top five analyst upgrades with this list compiled by The Fly: 1. Netflix (NFLX) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at UBS, with analyst Eric Sheridan saying that after six months of stock underperformance as key debates emerged about competition, margins and free cash flow, the debates are better understood by investors and reflected in the current stock price. The analyst sees share upside over the near-to-medium term to subscriber growth. Current subscriber metrics such as growth, churn, spend and consumption are tracking inline to better than management's Q4 guidance and commentary. Shares were also upgraded to Strong Buy from Outperform at Raymond James. 2. Legg Mason (LM) upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at BofA/Merrill, with analyst Michael Carrier saying flows are holding up better than peers, management is de-leveraging the balance sheet, and expects potential efficiency measures and product approvals to be announced. 3. Viacom (VIAB) upgraded to Outperform from In-Line at Imperial Capital by analyst David Miller, who said now is the time to get constructive given the stock's 13.5% correction over the past 12 weeks. The analyst added that while Viacom's fiscal 2019 film slate does not impress him, its slate for fiscal 2020 looks more promising, highlighted by Gemini Man, G.I. Joe, another Spongebob film, Top Gun, with Tom Cruise reprising his role from the 1986 classic. 4. Colgate-Palmolive (CL) upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Goldman Sachs, with analyst Jason English saying he expects a combination of accelerating organic sales and easing input cost pressures to drive higher profitability. Colgate-Palmolive's valuation will return to the historical premium "that it has enjoyed relative to the HPC sector once its organic sales re-accelerate," he said. 5. Tapestry (TPR) upgraded to Overweight from Equal Weight and Ralph Lauren (RL) upgraded to Equal Weight from Underweight at Barclays by analyst Chethan Mallela. Starbucks downgraded to Neutral from Buy at Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Karen Holthouse downgraded Starbucks to Neutral and lowered her price target for the shares to $68 from $75. The coffee giant closed yesterday up 31c to $64.19. The analyst remains "reasonably confident" that Starbucks' initiatives to drive digital engagement can lead to a "more stable" 3%-4% comp trajectory in the U.S. over the next few years. However, its valuation has "rapidly re-rated" to reflect this, and gift cards and digital trends could be points of caution in fiscal Q1, Holthouse tells investors in a research note. Further, she has "incremental concerns" regarding the China macro environment and the company's comp trajectory in that region. Other consumer companies, like Apple (AAPL) and McDonald's (MCD), have noted weakness in China, the analyst points out. Holthouse this morning also upgraded Texas Roadhouse (TXRH) to Buy from Neutral and downgraded Yum! Brands (YUM) to Sell from Neutral.

JPMorgan iPhone Supplier Tracker decelerated further in December
JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee says his firm's iPhone Supplier Tracker decelerated further in December, and marked the first year-over-year decline since November 2016. Aggregate revenues for the suppliers in the tracker declined by 4% year-over-year in December versus up 9% in November and up 17% in October. Quarterly supplier revenue trends decelerated as well in Q4 and points to continued iPhone revenue decline in Q1, Chatterjee tells investors in a research note. Further, he believes 2019 iPhone models are unlikely to involve major upgrades. However, a refresh in 2020 could drive Apple's virtual reality leadership, Chatterjee adds. He has an Overweight rating on the shares with a $228 price target.

ON Semiconductor risk/reward 'hard to ignore,' says Craig-Hallum
Craig-Hallum analyst Anthony Stoss notes that ON Semiconductor (ON) has not been spared in the recent selloff in semi/Apple (AAPL) suppliers. However, at just under 9 times FY2019 EPS the risk/reward is "hard to ignore," he contends. Stoss believes that content gains in auto and 5G base station builds will keep ON outperforming. He reiterates a Buy rating and $25 price target on ON's shares.
