NPD: Apple the 'clear market leader' in U.S. smartwatch sales

U.S. smartwatch sales experienced strong growth in the 12 months ending November 2018 compared to the same timeframe a year prior, according to The NPD Group's new Smartwatch Total Market Report. Dollar sales of smartwatches in the U.S. were up 51%, totaling nearly $5B in sales, while unit sales saw a 61% increase. "While Apple (AAPL) is the clear market leader, the new Smartwatch Total Market Report reveals that the top three brands -- Apple, Samsung (SSNLF), and Fitbit (FIT) -- made up 88% of smartwatch unit sales during the timeframe. However, traditional watch manufacturers, like Fossil (FOSL), and fitness-focused brands, like Garmin (GRMN), are working to grow their share of the market, as they continue to expand into the smartwatch category." Cirrus Logic downgraded to Hold on lower Apple volumes at Craig-Hallum
As previously reported, Craig-Hallum analyst Anthony Stoss downgraded Cirrus Logic (CRUS) to Hold from Buy as likely lower volumes at Apple (AAPL) this year will be hard to offset even with content expansion at Samsung (SSNLF) and other Android OEMs given Apple is about 83% of revenues. The analyst lowered his price target on the shares to $38 from $44.

Apple taking small step in right direction, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives says that while the overall headline numbers were not a surprise, he would characterize Apple's March guidance as "better than feared" with many of the bears whispering that a sub $55B revenue guidance was potentially in the cards versus Apple's $55B-$59B range. The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating and $200 price target on the shares.

Activision, Sonos, Netflix offer best strategic fits for Apple, says JPMorgan
Despite Apple (AAPL) itself offering no comments on the subject or giving any indication to investors of its intentions, potential acquisition targets for the company have been widely discussed in press reports on a regular basis, JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee tells investors in a research note. The speculation has included a wide range of industries, from automobile manufacturers, like Tesla (TSLA), to information platforms, like Twitter (TWTR), adds the analyst. He believes the speculation has likely in part been driven by the $130B of net cash on Apple's balance sheet. Chatterjee finds three industries to be of the most strategic value to Apple for potential deals: Video gaming, smart home speaker and video content. These areas provide potential growth opportunities to leverage Apple's services over a wider installed base, says the analyst. In video gaming, he sees Activision Blizzard (ATVI) as being the best strategic fit for Apple. In smart home speaker, Chatterjee believes Sonos (SONO) offers the best strategic of the names mentioned in the press. And in video content, the analyst views Netflix (NFLX) as the best strategic fit, although he "appreciates a combination is less likely as Netflix is unlikely to be a seller for a modest premium."

PayPal acceptance growth still best of any digital wallet, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst James Faucette said the most common question he has gotten for the past several weeks on PayPal (PYPL) has been, "Why is the stock underperforming so much since the beginning of 2019?" He believes PayPal's recent plateauing probably has more to do with other stocks than anything stock-specific, stating that Visa (V) and MasterCard (MA) "really have arguably had their best buying opportunities in years" and he would not be surprised to see PayPal "tread water" until those two stocks retake their respective highs. Another common thread in talks has been increasing concern that other digital wallets from Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL) and others may be closing the acceptance gap, though he thinks that "speculation is flatly wrong." Dating back to March 2016, PayPal has had the fastest acceptance growth among all digital wallets, outpacing all the other wallets that he can reliably track, Faucette tells investors. He maintains an Overweight rating and $99 price target on PayPal shares.

Citi consumer electronics survey positive for Corning, negative for GoPro
Citi surveyed 60 retail and electronics stores in the U.S. during mid-November to inquire about promotions, sell-through, and preferences for various consumer electronics products, analyst Jim Suva tells investors in a research note. The analyst calls television the "clear winner," followed by video game accessories and wireless speakers. The results point to continued size migration to 50 inch-plus TVs and strong elasticity of demand for price promotions, says Suva. He believes this benefits Corning (GLW). The analyst also finds the video gaming accessories trends as positive for Logitech (LOGI). Fitness trackers and smartwatch trends are neutral for Fitbit (FIT) and positive for Apple (AAPL), while digital camera trends negative for GoPro (GPRO), adds Suva.

Wedbush Black Friday checks positive for Consumer Electronics, Turtle Beach
Wedbush Retail analysts led by Michael Pachter say their Black Friday channel checks were positive for Consumer Electronics with Turtle Beach (HEAR) a "stand-out." Fitbit (FIT) and GoPro (GPRO) offered more compelling discounts on new products this year versus last year, which likely drove more unit sales, the analysts write in a research note. Further, they believe Amazon (AMZN) took Smart TV market share as its Fire TV Edition Smart TVs were not available at retail last year. Nonetheless, with more favorable pricing this year across brands and greater breadth of products, Roku TV (ROKU) unit sales were likely higher versus last year, say the analysts. And despite high inventory going into Black Friday, Turtle Beach had low inventory levels with "spotty" sell-outs on Black Friday, they note. The analysts believe this suggests a "very strong uptick" in year-over-year holiday sales for the company.

Morgan Stanley 'skeptical' Fitbit's new products can offset legacy declines
Morgan Stanley analyst Yuuji Anderson acknowledges that Fitbit's upside in Q3 restores some investors' confidence, but he remains skeptical that the improvements with Charge 3 and Versa will be sufficient to offset ongoing legacy declines. He thinks the current pace of new features is not enough to stabilize declining demand this year and expects shares to underperform heading into next year. Anderson maintains an Underweight rating on Fitbit shares and keeps a $4 price target on the stock, but raised his Q4 and FY19 estimates following the Q3 report.

Skyworks price target lowered to $84 from $96 at Canaccord
Canaccord analyst T. Michael Walkley lowered his price target on Skyworks (SWKS) to $84 from $96 following its preannouncement indicating weak smartphone sales from its leading customers, Apple (AAPL) and Samsung (SSNLF), would lead to lower revenues. The analyst also lowered his estimates due to weak global trends including Android smartphones. He still believes, however, that the company's diverse portfolio positions its broad market division for double digit annual growth and Walkley maintained his Buy rating on Skyworks shares.

Oppenheimer says 'rare miss' at Skyworks likely hints at downside risk for peers
Oppenheimer analyst Rick Schafer lowered his estimates for Skyworks (SWKS) after the company negatively pre-announced December quarter revenues and EPS, stating that he blames the majority of the company's "rare miss" on disappointing Apple (AAPL) iPhone units, though he also believes Samsung (SSNLF) and China OEMs contributed. Management did not offer a March quarter outlook, so estimates could come down again when Skyworks reports in a few weeks, warned Schafer, who thinks the pre-announcement likely hints at downside risk at peers such as Cirrus Logic (CRUS) and Qorvo (QRVO). He keeps a Perform rating on Skyworks shares, which are up 2% to $66.66 in morning trading.

Texas Instruments, TSMC, Lam among Citi's top global Semi picks for 2019
Citi's global top picks in Semiconductors are Texas Instruments (TXN), TSMC (TSM), Sony (SNE), Samsung (SSNLF), ASML (ASML), and Lam Research (LRCX), analysts led by Christopher Danely tell investors in a research note. Citi is "becoming more constructive as fundamentals are bottoming and semis are shipping below demand." The firm expects revenue for the Semiconductor sector in 2019 to decline 7% year-over-year, down from 15% year-over-year growth in 2018, due to the "memory crash dragging down overall sales." If China goes into recession, Citi believes semis will see "another big leg down." If not, the firm expects upside in the second half of 2019.

KeyBanc sees concerns on Fossil tariff exposure as 'compelling opportunity'
KeyBanc analyst Edward Yruma thinks that concerns on Fossil's tariff exposure present a "compelling near-term trading opportunity." After reviewing the USTR-2018-0026, the most recent list of $200B in annual trade goods subject to a potential 10% ad valorem duty, the analyst has concluded that wrist watches are not included and believes concerns are overdone. Fossil price target raised to $32 from $25 at KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Edward Yruma raised his price target for Fossil to $32 from $25 has he believes the company has turned the corner - a combination of expense reductions, focus on wearables, and a more favorable secular watch environment. Further, the analyst argues that new fashion trends and millennial interest in watches seems to be driving a stabilized watch environment. Yruma reiterates an Overweight rating on the shares.

Garmin wearables segment to top estimates in Q3, says Longbow
Longbow analyst Joe Wittine raised his Garmin price target to $75 from $72 and kept his Buy rating, saying his sell-through indicators suggest that the company's wearables sales will exceed consensus forecasts. The analyst is positive on Garmin's Fitness segment, raising his forecast based on the web search data in the quarter, and also sees the Outdoor segment results above the Street in spite of the channel fill timing related trim. Wittine believes that Garmin can deliver sales and earnings beats through 2019 thanks to "peak ADS-B installs, further expansion in advanced wearables, and some narrowing in Auto declines".

Sonos initiated with an Equal Weight at Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty started Sonos (SONO) with an Equal Weight rating and $20 price target, stating that she believes timely launches and consumer receptivity to new products will be the most important drivers of earnings growth. She thinks the multiple will contract similar to how Fitbit (FIT) and GoPro's (GPRO) did after their initial product missteps if Sonos' new products fail to meet expectations, but the stock could trade closer to companies such as Logitech (LOGI) and Garmin (GRMN) if new products outperform. Given this wide risk/reward, she would prefer to await evidence of Beam or other new products beating forecasts, Huberty tells investors in her initiation note.

Longbow predicts Q2 updside, guidance raise coming from Garmin
Longbow analyst Joe Wittine said his survey of aftermarket aviation dealers and distributors points to a positive inflection in Q2, driven in large part by ADS-B activity, and he also notes that early "fenix 5 Plus" search data points look good. Given his checks in the aviation and outdoor markets, as well as still-improving indicators for fitness, Wittine expects Q2 sales and EPS upside from Garmin and predicts the company will raise its 2018 guidance. He increased his price target on Garmin shares to $72 from $70 and keeps a Buy rating on the stock.
