Netflix reaction to Disney+ unveiling overdone, says Stifel
Noting that Disney (DIS) shares rose by 11% and Netflix (NFLX) shares declined by 4% on Friday following the former's unveiling of details for its Disney+ streaming service, Stifel analyst Scott Devitt said he thinks the reaction in Netflix shares was overdone. Netflix will be outspending Disney by six times on content in 2020 and still be outspending Disney by four times on content by 2024, Devitt tells investors. The analyst, who thinks investors have spent too much time "debating who will win/lose among the winners instead of focusing more time on separating winners from losers in the category," keeps a Buy rating and $400 price target on Netflix shares.

Disney price target raised to $140 from $130 at Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Alan Gould raised his price target on Disney to $140 and kept his Buy rating after its investor day presentation unveiling Disney+. The analyst says the preview offered greater specificity than expected and also "reset earnings expectations" with projections of 60-90M subscribers by 2024. Gould adds that while the related costs were "somewhat higher than anticipated" in FY20-22, the losses expected by FY23 are less than anticipated. The analyst also believes that investors will now be willing to pay a higher than normal premium for Disney shares.

Disney upgraded to Neutral at BTIG on strategy shift
As previously reported, BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield upgraded Disney to Neutral from Sell, saying the rating change was prompted more by the commentary from CEO Bob Iger on CNBC than by the company's investor day presentation unveiling Disney+. The analyst says he was initially inclined to keep his Sell rating given the overly "ambitious" 60M-90M 5-year subscriber target for the product, adding that while it is "nearly impossible to disprove a five-year projection for a service that has not even launched", he saw the $2.5B original content investment by 2024 as too small. Greenfield turned less negative on stock however after the company's CEO Iger signaled that the company is more aware of the need to "realize an even more dramatic shift in strategy" to a more consumer-driven model that will be required as its legacy businesses erode.

Longbow upgrades Western Digital with NAND recovery in 'line of sight'
Longbow Research analyst Nikolay Todorov upgraded Western Digital to Buy from Neutral with a $65 price target. The stock closed Friday up $1.00 to $51.83. NAND fundamentals are bottoming and "there is a line of sight to cyclical recovery," Todorov tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes NAND production is likely to be further rationalized with industry profitability under pressure and points out that pricing has recently shown signs of stabilization. Further, a hard drive revenue and gross margin recovery in the second half of 2019 does not appear to be fully contemplated by the Street, says Todorov. He sees an "asymmetric risk/reward" for Western Digital shares at current levels.

Western Digital recovery may be slower, weaker than many expect, says Benchmark
Benchmark analyst Mark Miller noted that Western Digital shares are up 40% year-to-date, which he attributes largely to expectations for a recovery in the second half and a U.S.-China trade deal. However, he sees signs suggesting that any potential recovery may come later than expected and may be weaker than many expect, he said. Miller, who has lowered his FY19 and FY20 estimates for Western Digital, keeps a Hold rating on the shares.

Western Digital price target raised to $53 from $39 at Loop Capital
Loop Capital analyst Ananda Baruah raised his price target on Western Digital to $53, saying the average selling prices in NAND memory appear to be improving going into Q2 as spot prices for 128GB chips rose about 4% over the past two weeks. The analyst is keeping his Hold rating however, stating that expansion in gross margins is "unclear", especially if it reaches "greater than 100% NAND JV capacity utilization exiting June" while holding NAND inventory at higher than current contract pricing. Longer term, Baruah adds that hyperscale demand could trend stronger in the second half of 2019, with HDD unit industry rising to 12M-15M per quarter in September and December quarters from the 10M-12M units per quarter in December 2018 through June 2019.

Nomura Instinet upgrades six in Chemicals ahead of Q1 earnings
Nomura Instinet analyst Aleksey Yefremov upgraded six names in Cyclical Chemicals ahead of the Q1 reporting season. The analyst sees the valuations as "encouraging" versus more defensive chemicals and the broader market. Select commodity prices are confirming better macro data, but large supply additions "are a limiting factor on how high stocks can go," Yefremov tells investors in a research note. China macro data continued to improve recently and valuations for the six upgrades are below cycle-average, says the analyst. He upgraded to Buy from Neutral shares of Dow Inc. (DOW), Eastman Chemical (EMN), Huntsman (HUN) and LyondellBasell (LYB) and to Neutral from Sell shares of Westlake Chemical (WLK) and Olin (OLN).

Dow Inc. initiated with an Underweight at JPMorgan
JPMorgan analyst Jeffrey Zekauskas started Dow Inc. (DOW) with an Underweight rating and $49 price target. The shares, over time, are likely to trade at a 0.0-0.5 tomes EBITDA multiple point turn to a normal 6.5-7.0 times multiple of EBITDA for large North American petrochemical companies, Zekauskas tells investors in a research note. The analyst expects Dow to trade over time at roughly a half turn premium to LyondellBasell (LYB), its closest comparable. Dow trades in the public markets at a premium to comparable companies because of its larger dividend, contends Zekauskas. However, he believes the market has yet to see the low point of domestic ethylene and polyethylene margins for 2019-2020 and adds that Dow's earnings and trading multiples are sensitive to oil prices.

The analyst is maintaining an "optimistic" outlook for Huntsman in expectation of " improving polyurethanes volumes in China and steady margins", but acknowledges greater pressure for the company to produce a stronger recovery in Q2-Q4.

Nomura downgrades Westlake to Reduce on growing caustic soda risk
Nomura Instinet analyst Aleksey Yefremov downgraded Westlake Chemical (WLK) to Reduce from Neutral and lowered his price target for the shares to $72 from $74. The supply/demand balance in the domestic caustic soda market continued to deteriorate in December and January, Yefremov tells investors in a research note. The analyst believes this will lead to the benchmark caustic soda index to decline in January and February. Further, industry conversations indicate that the level of domestic price competition increased considerably recently, as indicated by weaker spot market and discounts to freely negotiated and indexed contracts, Yefremov contends. He believes the risk/rewards for shares of Olin (OLN) and Westlake Chemical are "skewed to the downside." The analyst this morning also downgraded Olin to Reduce from Neutral.

Westlake Chemical price target lowered to $82 from $90 at Barclays
Barclays analyst Michael Leithead raised his price target for Westlake Chemical to $82 from $90 while keeping an Overweight rating on the shares. The analyst believes Street estimates are too high primarily in Vinyls, driven by continued caustic soda decline and further headwinds from high-cost natural gas inventory. He sees these offsetting PVC price improvements and modest seasonal benefits in building products. However, the analyst cites tightening Chlor-alkali supply/demand fundamentals, above-average capital deployment, and Westlake's "supportive valuation" for his continued positive view.
