Fly Intel: What to watch in IBM's earnings report

IBM (IBM) is scheduled to report results of its fiscal first quarter after the market close on April 16, with a conference call scheduled for 5:00 pm ET. What to watch for: 1. FY19 CONSENSUS UP A TICK: Along with its last report, IBM guided for fiscal 2019 operating earnings per share of "at least" $13.90. At the time, analysts were expecting the company to report FY19 EPS of $13.84, but that consensus figure has since risen to $13.91. In addition, IBM guided for FY19 free cash flow of about $12B, compared to the $11.9B it reported in FY18. 2. BLOCKCHAIN ECOSYSTEM: In late January, Aetna (CVS), Anthem (ANTM), Health Care Service Corporation, PNC Bank (PNC) and IBM announced a new collaboration to design and create a network using blockchain technology to "improve transparency and interoperability in the healthcare industry." The companies said that the goal of the collaboration is to create an inclusive blockchain network that can benefit multiple members of the healthcare ecosystem in a highly secure, shared environment. The members involved plan to add more partners to the network in the future, including other health organizations, healthcare providers, startups, and technology companies, they said. 3. JEDI CONTRACT: Last week, Reuters reported that U.S. Defense Department spokeswoman Elissa Smith confirmed that Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft (MSFT) had been picked as the final bidders for the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure Cloud contract that may be valued around $10B. The selection leaves out Oracle (ORCL) and IBM, who had previously been viewed as potential bidders. 4. CREDIT SUISSE NOTE: Last Thursday, Credit Suisse analyst Matt Cabral initiated coverage of IBM with an Outperform rating and a price target of $173. In a research note to investors, the analyst cited the impact of the company's pending Red Hat (RHT) takeover generating synergies while bringing together the industry expertise and incumbency to "help customers move to hybrid." Cabral also noted that while IBM has sustainable free cash flow of roughly $12B excluding Red Hat, he anticipates the deal will be cash flow accretive in the first year, becoming the company's "main driver of growth."

Deutsche gets more selective on banks, downgrades BB&T and PNC
Deutsche Bank analyst Matt O'Connor downgraded both BB&T (BBT) and PNC Financial (PNC) to Hold from Buy. The analyst lowered his price target for BB&T to $53 from $58 and for PNC to $135 from $161. Bank stocks have rallied 20% off the December 24 lows, outperforming the S&P 500 Index by 800 basis points, O'Connor tells investors in a research note. The analyst still sees upside to banks overall, but has become more selective.

Odeon's Bove says buy SunTrust, Midwest banks after deal announcement
Odeon analyst Dick Bove recommends investors buy shares of SunTrust (STI) following the company's announcement of an agreement to merge with BB&T (BBT), stating that the deal is expected to be accretive by 2021, but likely to be dilutive before this time. He also thinks investors should consider buying a group of Midwestern banks, as the deal puts "significant pressure" on those banks to merge. Banks such as Fifth Third (FITB) and KeyCorp (KEY) "need to join forces," while PNC (PNC) and U.S. Bancorp (USB) "need to buy more scale," Bove stated in his research note.

PNC Financial upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Macquarie
Macquarie analyst David Konrad upgraded PNC Financial to Outperform from Neutral and raised his price target to $144 from $134 given recent multiple compression, high BlackRock estimates and potential regulatory change for capital deductions. Konrad said PNC's strong fee income growth remains a key differentiator and expects operating leverage benefits as the company lags peers in terms of their efficiency ratio.

WellCare downgraded to Hold at Argus on Centene merger
Argus analyst David Toung downgraded WellCare (WCG) to Hold after it agreed to be acquired by Centene (CNC) in a $17.3B deal or at $305.39 per share. The analyst notes that because the deal would yield an entity that is smaller than the insurance industry giants, it may receive a more favorable treatment from the regulators than the failed Aetna (AET) -Humana (HUM) and Anthem (ANTM)-Cigna (CI) deals, but warns that some antitrust scrutiny is still possible due to overlaps between the companies in a few states. Toung adds that the new company would have "strengths in Medicare Advantage and Medicaid, both of which are growing markets."

Federal judge blocking Medicaid work rule positive for MCOs, says Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Stephen Tanal noted that Politico reported that a federal judge ruled for the second time to block new work requirements as a condition for Medicaid eligibility in Kentucky and Arkansas, calling the ruling an incremental positive for Managed Care and Provider companies. MCOs whose primary business is Medicaid managed care are most exposed to this theme, said Tanal, who lists Molina (MOH), WellCare (WCG) and Centene (CNC) as three with a higher percentage of MMC lives in states that have submitted waivers requesting approval to impose work requirements. However, the analyst also noted that Kentucky's Governor has already issued an executive order indicating the state would appeal any decision by a court against work requirements and, if unsuccessful, would reverse its Medicaid Expansion program. WellCare, CVS' (CVS) Aetan, Humana (HUM) and Anthem (ANTM) all operate in Kentucky's Medicaid managed care program, the analyst noted.

Raymond James upgrades Diplomat Pharmacy, sees number of potential suitors
Raymond James analyst John Ransom upgraded Diplomat Pharmacy (DPLO) to Outperform from Market Perform with an $8 price target. The stock closed yesterday up 14c to $5.86. Following the 56% share decline since the February earnings delay, Diplomat would represent value to a strategic buyer, Ransom tells investor in a research note. The analyst sees a number of potential buyers that would "covet" Diplomat Pharmacy's infusion franchise and could fold its large mail order business into an existing platform, including UnitedHealth (UNH), Cigna (CI), CVS Health (CVS), Anthem (ANTM) and Centene (CNC). Ransom thinks Diplomat's current fundamentals should motivate its board to step up its assessment of strategic options. He believes the company's collection of assets are underappreciated at current valuation levels.

Red Hat worth $190/share 'even as stand alone entity,' says Bernstein
Bernstein analyst Zane Chrane notes that Red Hat's (RHT) Q4 results are unlikely to have a material impact on the stock price given the expected acquisition by IBM (IBM) in the second half of 2019. However, strong growth in emerging products, continued reacceleration in RHEL revenue, and robust growth in deferred revenue and backlog all suggest the company is having increasing success in cross-selling its hybrid cloud solutions to large enterprise customers, he contends, adding that this quarter's results were "strong across the board," suggesting that the pending IBM deal is not having any negative impact on the company's execution. Chrane believes Red Hat is worth $190 per share "even as a stand-alone entity."

Oracle downgraded to Market Perform from Outperform at BMO Capital
BMO Capital analyst Keith Bachman downgraded Oracle (ORCL) to Market Perform from Outperform with an unchanged price target of $53 following last night's fiscal Q3 results. The stock in premarket trading is down 3%, or $1.65, to $51.40. The analyst believes Oracle can sustain ~2% constant currency revenue growth, but is "dubious" the company can improve its revenue growth rates. He does not think autonomous database or gradual unfolding of the cloud enterprise resource planning market will help Oracle's growth in fiscal 2020. As demonstrated by IBM (IBM) over the years, an aggressive buyback will not be enough to push the shares meaningfully higher without improved top-line results, Bachman tells investors in a post-earnings research note. As such, he sees a balanced risk/reward profile at current share levels.

Piper storage survey positive for Pure Storage, Nutanix, NetApp
Piper Jaffray conducted its fiscal Q4 Storage Reseller Survey by collecting feedback from 28 resellers and distributors. While only five of 14 vendors had net positive results versus six of the 14 last quarter, the firm saw "strong results" for Pure Storage (PSTG), Rubrik, Nutanix (NTNX), Veeam and NetApp (NTAP), analyst Andrew Nowinski told investors earlier in a research note. Pure Storage also had the strongest pipeline heading into the April quarter, added the analyst. The company's results sharply improved in the survey, with 67% of resellers citing "Above Plan" results, the highest level seen in three years, says Nowinski. The stock in early trading is up 19c to $18.47. Of those surveyed by Piper, 36% of resellers said they saw a negative impact from the U.S. government shutdown, with Dell (DELL), HP/3PAR (HPQ) and IBM (IMB) the most impacted.

Alliance Data structural challenges remain despite Epsilon sale, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Moshe Katri reiterates a Neutral rating and a $180 price target for Alliance Data (ADS) despite reported Epsilon's sale to Publicis (PUBGY) for $4.4B in cash. On one hand, his estimated Alliance Data stand-alone pro forma model suggests such a transaction could be highly accretive for its CEPS given Epsilon's lackluster growth rates combined with an inflated cost structure. On the other hand, the analyst notes that results from Alliance Data's 100-plus retailers will likely continue to be cannibalized by the "Amazon" (AMZN) effect, capping transaction volume growth and impacting results of the company's largest segment. Furthermore, the company will be selling its "big data"/analytics business, which in the past, has been viewed as a significant competitive differentiator, he adds.

Salmon also believes that while Netflix remains the clear leader in global streaming, Amazon (AMZN) and Disney (DIS) can also be "long-term winners" in the sector.

MongoDB partnership with Google a positive development, says William Blair
Google (GOOG, GOOGL) announced yesterday at its annual Cloud Next developer conference a slew of partnerships with open source database and analytics vendors, including MongoDB (MDB), William Blair analyst Jason Ader tells investors in a research note. Instead of competing with these vendors, like its main rival Amazon Web Services (AMZN) has generally chosen to do, Google is deepening integrations with these open source solutions in an effort to simplify customer adoption of them through the Google Cloud Platform, says Ader. He believes that although Google Cloud Platform is a "distant third" in market share to AWS and Microsoft's (MSFT) Azure, the news is a positive development for MongoDB "that could begin to bring more attention to and turn the tide against open source strip mining." Ader reiterates an Outperform rating on MongoDB shares.
