Box Office Battle: 'The Curse of La Llorona' wins slow Easter weekend

AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros' "The Curse of La Llorona" opened ahead of expectations with $26.5M to easily win the weekend. This was, however, the worst Easter at the domestic box office in 14 years as Hollywood studios held back releasing bigger event pics. Overseas, "The Curse of La Llorona" took in $30M from 71 markets for a global bow of $56.4M. The movie sports a B- CinemeScore and a 32% Rotten Tomatoes score. BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: AT&T subsidiary Warner Bros' "Shazam!" fell to number 2 in its third outing, earning $17.3M for a domestic total of $121.3M. Behind it was "Breakthrough," the first Fox title released by new owner Disney (DIS), grossing $11.1M for a five-day debut of $14.6M after opening on Wednesday. Marvell and Walt Disney Studio's "Captain Marvell" placed number four in North America with $9.1M and $6.1M abroad for a global cume of $1.09B. Rounding out the top five, Comcast (CMCSA, CMCSK) subsidiary Universal's "Little" grossed an estimated $8.5M in its sophomore outing. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Lionsgate's (LGF.A), Viacom (VIAB) and Sony (SNE).

Sprint, T-Mobile headlines positive for Dish, Intelsat, says Goldman Sachs
Goldman Sachs analyst Brett Feldman, while taking no view on the outcome of the proposed merger between Sprint (S) and T-Mobile (TMUS), laid out his thoughts for other industry participants following the Wall Street Journal's report that the Department of Justice is unlikely to approve the deal as currently structured. The analyst believes investors will initially see the headlines as negative for the other major wireless carriers, namely AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ), since they "create uncertainty over long-term industry structure." Further, investors will initially see these headlines as a slight positive for tower operators American Tower (AMT), Crown Castle (CCI) and SBA Communications (SBAC) as they "imply less risk of material cell site decommissioning," Feldman told investors earlier in a research note. The analyst also thinks investors will view the Journal's report as positive for owners of excess spectrum such as Dish (DISH) and Intelsat (I) and a slight positive for cable operators like Altice USA (ATUS), Charter (CHTR) and Comcast (CMCSA).

Viacom upgraded to Outperform from Sector Perform at RBC Capital
As previously reported, RBC Capital analyst Steven Cahall upgraded Viacom (VIAB) to Outperform from Sector Perform and raised his price target to $36 from $31, saying the company's "less contentious" than feared DirecTV (T) deal improves its standing and "paves the way toward merger talks" with CBS (CBS). The analyst sees an implied upside for Viacom stock at over 30% on the CBS deal prospects and believes that investors should own both to hedge the exchange ratio risk of the potential transaction.

Viacom upgraded to Buy at Loop Capital on de-risked AT&T loss
As previously reported, Loop Capital analyst Alan Gould upgraded Viacom (VIAB) to Buy from Hold with a price target of $35. The analyst cites the company's loss of its biggest distributor AT&T (T) having been de-risked which, he believes, raises the likelihood of a Viacom merger with CBS (CBS). Gould adds that despite the renewed distribution deal with AT&T, investors can accumulate shares at a lower price than a few weeks ago, resulting in a "positive risk-reward" for Viacom.

Fundamentals across cable remain strong, says JPMorgan
Sustained household formation and wage growth, along with a pullback in promotional activity at AT&T (T), the main competitor to most multi-service operators, keeps fundamentals across cable strong, JPMorgan analyst Philip Cusick tells investors in a research note. In 2018, the U.S. added ~1.5m households for the second year in a row, "which sets up the wireline video and broadband ecosystems well in 2019," says the analyst. Altice USA (ATUS) and Charter Communications (CHTR) are both on the JPMorgan's Analyst Focus List, and Comcast (CMCSA) is Cusick's favorite mega-cap service provider. The analyst is "wary" of the multiple of Underweight-rated Cable One (CABO), but admits its operational momentum seems strong.

The data also exposed unannounced F100 HCM wins at Comcast (CMCSA; CMCSK), CapitalOne (COF), and Centene (CNC), although job dates suggest these deals may have closed in the October quarter. The January data also exposed a new cloud financials win at Adecco (AHEXY), Bracelin adds. The analyst reiterates an Overweight rating on Workday's shares.

WWE shares 'on sale' after pullback, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst Benjamin Swinburne noted that WWE (WWE) shares are down by over 30% this month, which he sees as a "rare opportunity" to buy shares of a company that he sees having both highly visible earnings growth and growing intellectual property value. He attributes the rapid selloff primarily to a broader market rotation out of risk assets due to rising interest rates and concerns over achieving long-term growth, but he thinks this "does not make sense" given that WWE's EBITDA opportunity "is not a decade away, but rather a year away," Swinburne tells investors. Two contracts underwritten by Comcast (CMCSA) and Fox (FOXA) drive the bulk of its earnings growth and its financial outlook has no immediate exposure to ratings or cord-cutting, Swinburne added. While he trimmed his price target on WWE shares to $95 from $105 after bumping up his investment expectations for 2019, the analyst maintains an Overweight rating on the stock.

In the near-term, Sky will be accretive to that growth rate, Swinburne added. Jefferies takes Sony back to Buy with $58 target amid activist pressure
Jefferies analyst Atul Goyal upgraded Sony to Buy from Hold and raised his price target for the shares to $58 from $50.70. Pressure is mounting on Sony to exit its loss-making Smartphone business, Goyal tells investors in a research note. After removing the business from his sum-of-the-parts analysis, the analyst sees 20% upside in the stock. Further, Goyal thinks downside in Sony shares is limited with the presence of activists. Sony 'PS5' details largely in line with expectations, says Baird
After Sony (SNE) shared details around its upcoming next-generation game console, widely referred to as the "PlayStation 5," Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said the details - including plans for significant GPU and CPU upgrades and the inclusion of a solid state hard drive - are largely in line with his expectations and support his view that the next generation of consoles should be "a major catalyst" for software sales in 2020-2021 and beyond. Sony's announcement that the next-gen console will include a physical disc drive is a potential positive for GameStop's (GME) used and pre-owned console software segments, added Sebastian. Video game software makers include Electronic Arts (EA), Take-Two (TTWO) and Activision Blizzard (ATVI).

Barrington analyst James Goss lowered his price target for Lionsgate to $21 and keeps an Outperform rating on the shares. China price cuts, content M&A to lay groundwork for Apple's future, says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives believes Apple (AAPL) needs to aggressively cut prices in China on XR and pull forward what he estimates is roughly 15M-20M iPhones that would otherwise sit idle waiting for the next release, or worst case, move to lower priced competition. Additionally, with services the linchpin of the Apple story moving forward, there needs to be serious contemplation within Cupertino around significant content acquisitions to drive services over the coming years, he contends. Ives sees A24, Lionsgate (LGF.A; LGF.B), and Sony Pictures (SNE) among the highest probability M&A targets, Viacom (VIA;VIAB)/CBS(CBS), and MGM Studios among the medium probability M&A targets, and Netflix (NFLX), Disney (DIS), and Gaming platform/video game publishers among the low probability M&A targets. BMO Capital analyst Daniel Salmon raised his price target on Netflix (NFLX) to $470 and kept his Outperform rating ahead of its Q1 earnings today, saying he expects "strong results" from the company. The analyst bases his price target change on his rolled out estimates for 2021-2028 and believes that Netflix still has "room to grow" internationally - particularly in India and Japan - while improving its per subscriber leverage on content spend and generating "steady growth of its consumer product licensing revenues." Netflix Q2 guidance mixed on limited new content, says Piper Jaffray
Netflix (NFLX) last night reported upside for Q1 and provided a mixed Q2 outlook, Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson tells investors in a research note. Most importantly, says the analyst, is that international subscriber additions were ahead of expectations for the quarter and essentially in-line for the Q2 guide. For domestic subscribes, Q1 was also ahead of consensus, but Q2 domestic sub guidance is below the Street, adds Olson. He believes Netflix's Q2 is "light on new content" but that its slate "appears strong" for the second half of 2019. Further, despite new services on the horizon from Disney (DIS) and Apple (AAPL), the analyst expects "minimal impact" to Netflix subscriber additions and retention. Olson thinks Netflix will "continue to capture a significant portion of traditional content dollars as they migrate to streaming." The analyst reiterates an Overweight rating on Netflix shares with a $440 price target.

JPMorgan sees 'much more' to like than not in Netflix Q1, ups target to $450
JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth raised his price target for Netflix (NFLX) to $450 from $435 and reiterates an Overweight rating on the shares following last night's Q1 results. While the earnings report "may be controversial to some," mostly because of the light Q2 subscriber outlook, there's "much more to like here than not," Anmuth tells investors in a research note. Netflix's Q1 paid net adds of 9.6M and operating margin of 10.2% is above expectations and the company expects 2019 paid net adds to be greater than in 2018, the analyst points out. Further, he sees a "strong" back half of 2019 content slate across series and films. While 2020 will bring a more competitive landscape, the secular global streaming trend and ongoing improvements to Netflix's product should continue to drive "strong" sub growth, says Anmuth. He continues to believe that Disney+ (DIS) will not be a major threat to Netflix subscriber numbers.
