Piper sees U.S. ride-hailing market reaching $500B per year by 2040

Piper Jaffray expects the U.S. ride-hailing market will achieve annual revenue of $500B per year by 2040, analysts led by Alexander Potter tell investors in a research note. The firm, which utilized baseline data from the National Household Travel Survey, expects ride-hailing growth to continue, with around one-third of urban trips relying on shared third-party vehicles in 2040. This compares to a baseline of only 1.4% in 2017, and equates to a 20-year annual growth rate of ~14%, the analysts contend. Of the stocks with exposure to this trend, Piper prefers Lyft (LYFT), General Motors (GM) and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI). Other covered companies also warrant mention, including Apple (AAPL), Amazon.com (AMZN), Aptiv (APTV), Ford (F), Nvidia (NVDA), and Tesla (TSLA), says Piper.

Uber S-1 filing not a positive for Lyft, says Guggenheim
After reviewing Uber's (UBER) S-1 related to its planned initial public offering, Guggenheim analyst Jake Fuller tells investors that he does not see the Uber filing as a positive for Lyft (LYFT). He explains that his read of Uber's disclosures "seem to suggest" that Lyft's domestic market share may be lower than the 39% it claims. Additionally, Uber indicates that it expects near-term pressure on take-rates and profit margin, but the Lyft bull case includes a rational-competition scenario, Fuller said. Either Uber may be understating or Lyft may be overstating take-rate, but "it is clear that the reported metrics are not comparable," added Fuller, who keeps a Neutral rating on Lyft shares.

Lyft initiated with an Overweight rating, $78 price target at Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson initiated coverage of recent initial public offering Lyft with an Overweight rating and $78 price target. The stock closed yesterday up $2.58, or 4%, to $60.94. Lyft will be both a driver and beneficiary of the growth of ridesharing and autonomous technology over the next 10-plus years, Olson tells investors in a research note. The analyst recommends investors with a "long-term view, and patience" own the stock. Olson expects "solid" near-term top line results from Lyft. The company has been gaining market share in recent quarters, "but the path to significantly positive net income will be a multi-year journey," he writes. Olson has a "don't overthink it" thesis on Lyft. One of the most significant changes in the lives of humans over the next fifty years will be tied to transportation, and this change will built on a foundation of vehicle electrification, autonomous proliferation and multi-modal networks, according to the analyst. "In the coming decades, participants in the creation of solutions to alleviate these challenges will reap the benefits," says Olson.

Honda upgraded to Buy on plant closures at Nomura Instinet
As previously reported, Nomura Instinet analyst Masataka Kunugimoto upgraded Honda (HMC) to Buy from Neutral as he believes auto plant closures will prompt a reassessment of the company's strong balance sheet and motorcycle operations. The analyst likes its more flexible management approach, as evidenced by the moves to strengthen its partnership with General Motors (GM) in next-generation technologies. He also commends the tough decision it has taken to close plants in the U.K. and Turkey in 2021, in addition to the previous decision to close the Sayama plant in Japan, which it announced in October 2017. Kunugimoto expects reductions in fixed costs and production costs per vehicle as a result of these plant closures to boost operating profits. The analyst raised his price target on Honda shares to JPY3,850 from JPY3,014.

Morgan Stanley would be less surprised by GM's Cruise scaling back than growing
Following a recent Reuters report that said General Motors' (GM) Cruise unit plans to add 1,000 team members to double its headcount by year-end, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas said he would have been less surprised if Cruise was scaling back its growth plans rather than accelerating them given what he sees as "a general stalling" of autonomous vehicle expectations. His understanding is that the technology required to remove human drivers at an acceptable level of safety is likely many years away, said Jonas, who added that "it really matters" what Amazon (AMZN) is doing and whether it becomes a potential partner with GM, a competitor, or both. He maintains an Overweight rating on GM shares.

Morgan Stanley urges investors to lower expectations for GM Cruise unit
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas noted that GM's Cruise unit has stated a target to launch its robotaxi service by the end of 2019, but his view is that the technology required to remove human drivers at an acceptable level of safety is likely many years away. While "taking nothing away from GM Cruise," which Jonas thinks has important technological value, he urged investors to lower expectations for the unit's revenue generation and profitability. He said that if GM were to potentially recast its projected time horizon for the launch of its Cruise robotaxi service that he believes "the stock market would be largely understanding." Morgan Stanley prefers Seagate over Western Digital as cloud capex recovery play
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said her industry conversations have increased her confidence in a cloud recovery in the second half. Her checks suggest orders from Microsoft (MSFT) will restart in Q2 and rise to above trend levels in Q3 while orders from Amazon (AMZN), Google (GOOGL), Facebook (FB) and Apple (AAPL) are expected to return in Q3. Given this context, Huberty said she prefers Seagate (STX) over Western Digital (WDC) as a play on a cloud capital expenditure recovery, noting that inventory levels position hard disk drives to benefit before NAND, that HDD pricing is structurally better positioned than NAND and her view that Seagate has a better HDD product portfolio to meet cloud demand in the second half of 2019 and first half of 2020. Apple to benefit from Qualcomm litigation settlement, says Argus
Argus analyst Jim Kelleher kept his Buy rating and $225 price target on Apple (AAPL), saying the company's "comprehensive legal settlement and new supply agreement with Qualcomm (QCOM)" should benefit the shares. Nomura cautious on Semiconductors near term, calls AMD 'stand out'
Nomura Instinet analyst David Wong rolled out coverage on four names in the U.S. Semiconductors. The analyst has a positive view on long-term semiconductor growth, but cyclical concerns make him cautious in the near term. He models long-term semiconductor annual sales growth of 7%-9% from 2020 to 2025, driven by new technologies, including artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, 5G communications, Internet of Things, and the continued buildout of global datacenter infrastructure. However, the cyclical downturn, which began in the second half of 2018, could "present headwinds" for chip companies through 2019 and possibly in 2020, Wong tells investors in a research note. He foresees continuing year-over-year declines for the chip industry through 2019, with 2019 down about 10%. Nonetheless, the analyst initiated coverage of AMD (AMD) and Intel (INTC) with Buy ratings and price targets of $33 and $65, respectively. AMD's "solid positions" in both the x86 microprocessor and standalone graphics processor markets "make it stand out," says Wong. He believes the company has an opportunity to gain share with the launch of its new microprocessor and GPU families, driving sales growth through 2019, 2020, and beyond. Further, Wong thinks Intel's "dominance" in microprocessors, and in particular its leadership in artificial intelligence and autonomous driving, will drive above-average long-term growth for the company. The analyst also initiated Nvidia (NVDA) and Xilinx (XLNX) with Neutral ratings. He thinks both stocks' valuations already reflect the companies' positives.
