Tesla price target lowered to $160 from $170 at Cowen

Cowen analyst Jeffrey Osborne maintained an Underperform rating on Tesla (TSLA) and lowered his price target to $160 from $170 following the company's "Autonomy Day" event, saying he sees a significant amount of technology and execution risk in the shift in strategy from competing in just electrification to also beating Nvidia (NVDA) in hardware, Google (GOOGL) in software, and building a better ride-hailing service than current leaders in the sector.

Tesla still the 'clear leader' in EVs, says Canaccord
Canaccord analyst Jed Dorsheimer reiterated a Buy rating and $391 price target on Tesla following the company's "Autonomy Day" presentation. In a research note to investors, Dorsheimer said he continues to see Tesla as the "clear leader" in EVs, and if anything remotely close to the timeline for Level 5 capabilities that the company has laid out occurs, the formidable lead that the company has in autonomy will result in "meaningful" market share gains. He also feels that the recent shareholder friendly Board member reduction to 7 from 11 that removed several of CEO Elon Musk's close allies should create a more balanced corporate governance going forward.

Piper sees U.S. ride-hailing market reaching $500B per year by 2040
Piper Jaffray expects the U.S. ride-hailing market will achieve annual revenue of $500B per year by 2040, analysts led by Alexander Potter tell investors in a research note. The firm, which utilized baseline data from the National Household Travel Survey, expects ride-hailing growth to continue, with around one-third of urban trips relying on shared third-party vehicles in 2040. This compares to a baseline of only 1.4% in 2017, and equates to a 20-year annual growth rate of ~14%, the analysts contend. Of the stocks with exposure to this trend, Piper prefers Lyft (LYFT), General Motors (GM) and NXP Semiconductors (NXPI). Other covered companies also warrant mention, including Apple (AAPL), Amazon.com (AMZN), Aptiv (APTV), Ford (F), Nvidia (NVDA), and Tesla (TSLA), says Piper.

Tesla's Q1 results 'the elephant in the room,' says Wedbush
Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives says that while he expects positive announcements from Tesla's Autonomy Day event, clearly "the elephant in the room" is Q1 earnings around the corner, which based on delivery numbers released and the cost trajectory is expected to be a "train wreck quarter." The analyst "firmly" believes in the long-term vision for Tesla and expects self-driving autonomous technology will be a linchpin of the company's success, he notes that the Street needs to have a better grasp on the near-term demand trajectory in the U.S. for Q2, delivery logistics for Model 3 in Europe/ China, and better understanding of the tenuous balance sheet situation going forward for the stock to stabilize. Ives reiterates an Outperform rating and a $365 price target on the stock.

Nomura cautious on Semiconductors near term, calls AMD 'stand out'
Nomura Instinet analyst David Wong rolled out coverage on four names in the U.S. Semiconductors. The analyst has a positive view on long-term semiconductor growth, but cyclical concerns make him cautious in the near term. He models long-term semiconductor annual sales growth of 7%-9% from 2020 to 2025, driven by new technologies, including artificial intelligence, autonomous driving, 5G communications, Internet of Things, and the continued buildout of global datacenter infrastructure. However, the cyclical downturn, which began in the second half of 2018, could "present headwinds" for chip companies through 2019 and possibly in 2020, Wong tells investors in a research note. He foresees continuing year-over-year declines for the chip industry through 2019, with 2019 down about 10%. Nonetheless, the analyst initiated coverage of AMD (AMD) and Intel (INTC) with Buy ratings and price targets of $33 and $65, respectively. AMD's "solid positions" in both the x86 microprocessor and standalone graphics processor markets "make it stand out," says Wong. He believes the company has an opportunity to gain share with the launch of its new microprocessor and GPU families, driving sales growth through 2019, 2020, and beyond. Further, Wong thinks Intel's "dominance" in microprocessors, and in particular its leadership in artificial intelligence and autonomous driving, will drive above-average long-term growth for the company. The analyst also initiated Nvidia (NVDA) and Xilinx (XLNX) with Neutral ratings. He thinks both stocks' valuations already reflect the companies' positives.

Alphabet price target raised to $1,420 from $1,390 at Cowen
Cowen analyst John Blackledge maintained an Outperform rating on Alphabet and lifted his price target to $1,420 from $1,390 ahead of the company's Q1 results on April 29. In a research note to investors, Blackledge says he estimates a slight reported topline growth deceleration for Q1 vs. last year and further core Google operating margin compression. He sees shares likely rising off the print with a small revenue beat and margin upside from faster TAC cost deceleration and possibly lower than expected R&D costs.

Morgan Stanley prefers Seagate over Western Digital as cloud capex recovery play
Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty said her industry conversations have increased her confidence in a cloud recovery in the second half. Her checks suggest orders from Microsoft (MSFT) will restart in Q2 and rise to above trend levels in Q3 while orders from Amazon (AMZN), Google (GOOGL), Facebook (FB) and Apple (AAPL) are expected to return in Q3. Given this context, Huberty said she prefers Seagate (STX) over Western Digital (WDC) as a play on a cloud capital expenditure recovery, noting that inventory levels position hard disk drives to benefit before NAND, that HDD pricing is structurally better positioned than NAND and her view that Seagate has a better HDD product portfolio to meet cloud demand in the second half of 2019 and first half of 2020. Huberty has an Overweight rating on Seagate and the firm has an Equal Weight rating on Western Digital, which is covered by analyst Joseph Moore.

MongoDB partnership with Google a positive development, says William Blair
Google (GOOG, GOOGL) announced yesterday at its annual Cloud Next developer conference a slew of partnerships with open source database and analytics vendors, including MongoDB (MDB), William Blair analyst Jason Ader tells investors in a research note. Instead of competing with these vendors, like its main rival Amazon Web Services (AMZN) has generally chosen to do, Google is deepening integrations with these open source solutions in an effort to simplify customer adoption of them through the Google Cloud Platform, says Ader. He believes that although Google Cloud Platform is a "distant third" in market share to AWS and Microsoft's (MSFT) Azure, the news is a positive development for MongoDB "that could begin to bring more attention to and turn the tide against open source strip mining." Ader reiterates an Outperform rating on MongoDB shares.

Lyft initiated with a Sector Weight at KeyBanc
KeyBanc analyst Andy Hargreaves started coverage of Lyft with a Sector Weight. While the analyst acknowledges that Lyft holds a "unique and valuable strategic position" in North American ride-sharing, he believes the large cost gap between owned cars and ride-sharing suggests that a significant portion of its profit potential will be unlocked only after the driver is removed, which likely remains several years away. In the meantime, Hargreaves expects steady deceleration in market growth and Lyft's pace of share gain, which seems likely to prevent revenue and adjusted EBITDA from meaningfully exceeding his expectations.

The analyst believes secular growth toward transportation-as-a-Service supports Lyft's projected 32% annual revenue through 2021. Ridesharing will be profitable as the industry scales and becomes more rational over time, says Anmuth.

Twilio 23% pullback this month a buying opportunity, says Piper Jaffray
Piper Jaffray analyst Alex Zukin recommends using the 23% pullback in Twilio shares this month as a buying opportunity. The analyst left the company's Signal conference believing that the demand environment "remains robust." Floor conversations with employees and sales executives suggest that "morale is high and quotas are attainable," Zukin tells investors in a research note. Further, the conversations also suggested that Uber may be considering engaging with Twilio when it comes to Flex, the analyst adds. He believes that if true, this would be a "big turn of events with regard to the Twilio-Uber relationship and may lead to yet another change in the financial relationship between the two companies." Zukin reiterates an Overweight rating on Twilio with an $85 price target.

Uber S-1 filing not a positive for Lyft, says Guggenheim
After reviewing Uber's (UBER) S-1 related to its planned initial public offering, Guggenheim analyst Jake Fuller tells investors that he does not see the Uber filing as a positive for Lyft (LYFT). He explains that his read of Uber's disclosures "seem to suggest" that Lyft's domestic market share may be lower than the 39% it claims. Additionally, Uber indicates that it expects near-term pressure on take-rates and profit margin, but the Lyft bull case includes a rational-competition scenario, Fuller said. Either Uber may be understating or Lyft may be overstating take-rate, but "it is clear that the reported metrics are not comparable," added Fuller, who keeps a Neutral rating on Lyft shares.

Food delivery is not winner-take-all industry, says Jefferies
Jefferies analyst Brent Thill believes much of this information disclosed last night by Uber (UBER) regarding Uber Eats was already well understood by investors. Uber has been more transparent about the Eats business the last couple quarters, Thill tells investors in a research note. He points out that GrubHub (GRUB) shares are down 54% from their highs, which he believes is due to increased competition and disclosures from Uber and other larger players. Uber Eats is likely losing money while GrubHub has been profitable since its initial public offering, says Thill. Further, he believes that while the "rapid growth" of Eats creates a challenging competitive environment, third party food delivery is not a winner-take-all industry. The analyst, while acknowledging GrubHub's risk/reward is getting more attractive, keeps a Hold rating on the stock with an $80 price target. Thill continues to like Waitr Holdings (WTRH) and would be a buyer of the stock on the recent pullback.

In a research note to investors, Arounian says GrubHub investors were likely hoping for more clarity on Uber Eats' U.S. diners and gross food sales, but says take rates are "comparable but headed in different directions," with GrubHub's take rate on the rise and Uber Eats' take rate declining. He estimates Uber Eats' U.S. scale is where he previously expected and trails GrubHub.
