Fly Intel: What to watch in PayPal earnings report

PayPal (PYPL) is scheduled to report results of its first fiscal quarter after market close on April 24, with a conference call scheduled for 5:00 pm EDT. What to watch for: 1. OUTLOOK: During the company's last earnings call, PayPal said it sees fiscal year 2019 earnings per share between $2.84-$2.91 and revenue of $17.85B-$18.10B, with consensus at $2.88 and $18.04B, respectively. The company also said it expects first quarter earnings per share of 66c-68c and revenue between $4.08B-$4.13B. 2. INSTAGRAM PARTNERSHIP: On March 19, PayPal announced that it was partnering with Facebook's (FB) Instagram to help power checkout on Instagram. The company said, "This new experience will enable shoppers to check out faster with PayPal & merchants to sell their products directly on Instagram." It added that, "Shoppers will be able to securely store their preferred payment type, including PayPal, for faster checkout on future purchases. Shoppers can also use the Instagram app to view their order status, estimated delivery date and tracking number, as well as cancel orders, initiate a return, or request additional support." 3. LIMITED BEAT-AND-RAISE POTENTIAL: Last week, UBS analyst Eric Wasserstrom downgraded PayPal to Neutral from Buy as he contended that its Venmo app leads and monetization are already priced into the stock, leaving little for earnings upside. The analyst told investors in a research note that his analysis of PayPal's core operations indicates "limited beat-and-raise potential" over the next two years and said his "bull scenario" for Venmo monetization would only add 2% to his current 2020 earnings estimates. While Venmo maintains a leading competitive position in people-to-people payments, Wasserstrom argued that this competitive position will translate into "limited" revenue and net income contribution over the next two years. Further, the analyst said he sees limited valuation upside in shares of PayPal at current levels. 4. VENMO MONETIZATION, NEW PARTNERSHIPS: Reiterating an Overweight rating on the shares, KeyBanc analyst Josh Beck raised his price target for PayPal to $115 from $110 ahead of quarterly results. The analyst acknowledged that expectations are fairly high following a positive Venmo update last quarter, but while he expects TPV headwinds to persist, Beck sees room for credit-driven OVAS to offset. Overall, the analyst said he remains optimistic on the potential for Venmo monetization, new marketplace agreements, and partnerships to offset the eBay (EBAY) transition. 5. INSTANT TRANSFER: Last month, PayPal announced it was rolling out Instant Transfer to bank to U.S. consumers. In a blog post, PayPal's Bill Ready stated that, "We're beginning to roll out Instant Transfer to bank to consumers in the U.S. now and we expect to roll this out for businesses in the U.S. in the coming weeks, with international expansion expected in the near future. We're able to offer this functionality to our customers following our expanded partnership with JPMorgan Chase (JPM). Through this partnership, PayPal is able to access the Real Time Payments network from The Clearing House, and enable Instant Transfer to bank."

PayPal maintains acceptance lead among retailers, says Morgan Stanley
Morgan Stanley analyst James Faucette said his analysis shows that PayPal now has acceptance at 76% of the top 500 U.S. internet retailers and that on a volume-weighted basis excluding Amazon (AMZN) the company's acceptance penetration was 79% in Q1. He believes this acceptance lead vs. other digital wallets is underappreciated by investors as a key indicator of future payment volume growth and should enable PayPal to grow at or above the rate of e-commerce ex-Amazon. Faucette raised his price target on PayPal shares to $113 from $103 and keeps an Overweight rating on the shares.

Baird expects in-line Q1 results, conservative guidance from PayPal
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian said he expects PayPal to report "in-line" Q1 earnings results due to "decent e-commerce trends," along with conservative Q2 guidance. The analyst noted that PayPal's investors will be focused on the progress of Venmo's monetization, the iZettle integration, the eBay managed payments impact, and cross-border macro outlook. Sebastian maintained an Outperform rating and $99 price target on PayPal shares.

Signs of potential value creation from Facebook new products, says Credit Suisse
Credit Suisse analyst Stephen Ju continues to anticipate the real clearing data point for Facebook shares will arrive on the Q3 report, in which he expects the OpEx/CapEx outlook to signal a return to growth for free cash flow. In the meantime, ahead of Q1 results, his checks continue to suggest minimal deceleration for U.S. budgets coupled with modest headwinds in Europe. Ju also believes there are "greater signs" of potential value creation from new products. The analyst reiterates an Outperform rating on the shares, while raising his price target on the stock to $211 from $210, as he believes Facebook will be able to drive long-term revenue growth without a material lift in ad loads with, the Street models continue to underestimate the long-term monetization potential of other billion-user properties like Messenger and WhatsApp, and free cash flow growth recovery for 2020.

Facebook to report in-line to better-than-expected Q1, says Baird
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian expects Facebook to report in-line to better-than-expected Q1 results this week on the back of healthy advertiser demand. Sebastian tells investors in a research note that his firm's checks continue to suggest positive trends for the Facebook ecosystem, adding that Instagram is "particularly strong," despite headline concerns over platform privacy and safety. Management continues to highlight the growing contribution from new channels/formats while Messenger remains an area of increased focus, potentially a highlight at the upcoming F8 conference next week, he says. He maintains an Outperform rating and $195 price target.

Facebook 2019 estimates raised at Cleveland Research
Cleveland Research analyst Chandler Converse said his checks point to Q1 revenue for Facebook in-line with management's guidance for a mid-single digit deceleration in growth, but he also noted that advertisers seem incrementally more optimistic on the adoption of Stories ads. Additionally, partners appeared to slow plans to diversify budgets away from Facebook in the near-term given better ROI trends, said the analyst, who raised his 2019 estimates and keeps a Buy rating on the stock.

Twitter price target raised to $44 from $33 at Oppenheimer

In general, the company has navigated public policy issues better than peers Alphabet (GOOG) and Facebook (FB), he contends. Helfstein reiterates an Outperform rating on Twitter's shares.

eBay price target raised to $44 from $40 at Baird
Baird analyst Colin Sebastian raised his price target for eBay to $44 from $40 saying yesterday's Q1 results were better than feared. The company reported upside to both revenues and earnings, as take rate benefited from ramping promoted listings and less contra-revenue headwind, Sebastian tells investors in a post-earnings research note. While "overall platform health is a bit mixed," stable sold items and buyer growth are "green-shoots for potential improvement," adds the analyst. He continues to view eBay shares as attractive for value-oriented investors and keeps an Outperform rating on the name.

eBay price target raised to $49 from $46 at Barclays
Barclays analyst Ross Sandler raised his price target for eBay to $49 from $46 saying the shares offer more upside following the company's Q1 results. While the core marketplace gross merchandise volume growth continues to decelerate as expected, the take-rate improvement from lower contra marketing and adoption of promoted listings delivered revenue upside, Sandler tells investors in a research note. At current share values, investors are paying eight times for core marketplaces, "which is arguably still too cheap," adds the analyst. He keeps an Overweight rating on eBay.

Worldpay downgraded to Sector Weight after Fiserv deal at KeyBanc

The analyst thinks this transaction is likely to expand the M&A discussion around Global Payments, TSYS (TSS), EVO Payments (EVOP), and i3 Verticals (IIIV) and sees paths to accretion should management teams further endorse a scale strategy. Future processing competition could increase among Global Payments, TSYS, First Data, and JPMorgan (JPM), but it remains too early to gauge, he contends.

Jefferies downgrades Financials to Underweight on 'shocking' Fed meeting
Jefferies analyst Steven DeSanctis is "very surprised" by last week's Federal Reserve's decision taking rate hikes completely off table in 2019. The "shocking" Fed meeting means lower rates for longer, which is not good for Financials, DeSanctis tells investors in a research note. A "lack of catalysts and weaker earnings growth" going forward for the entire sector, not just banks, means an Underweight rating on the space makes sense, says the analyst. As such, he downgraded his rating on the Financial sector to Underweight from Market Weight. Publicly traded companies in the space include Bank of America (BAC), Citi (C), Goldman Sachs (GS), JPMorgan (JPM), Morgan Stanley (MS), U.S. Bancorp (USB) and Wells Fargo (WFC).
